San Francisco Japanese Tea Garden -- Golden Gate Park

In this brief YouTube narration, Austin Klar explains that the San Francisco Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States. He traces its origins to the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition, where it began as a Japanese village exhibit. After the fair, most structures were removed, but a Japanese landscape architect was hired to maintain the garden and lived on site for three decades until his death. During World War II the architect’s family was interned and the garden suffered further damage. Following the post‑war peace agreement between Japan and the United States in the 1950s, the garden was redesignated as a Japanese tea garden and underwent careful restoration over several decades. Klar concludes by noting that tours are free, encourages viewers to visit, and invites them to follow him for more Bay Area history.
