A shuttered historic theater in San Francisco is finally coming back, and I cannot wait for it to reopen. The 112-year-old Clay Theater in Pacific Heights shuttered in 2020 because of the pandemic, and there's been really no firm direction on the future of the theater. A nonprofit group tied to a venture capitalist purchased the theater along with several other commercial buildings on Fillmore Street as part of a project to revitalize the area called the Upper Fillmore Revitalization Project. And until recently, no plans regarding its future had been announced. But good news, it's coming back and it's gonna be better than ever. It's set to undergo undergo significant modernization, 4K projection and 35mm capability, all new sound, and of course all the infrastructure needed to make the 100-plus-year-old theater safe. The new owners also announced a new programming director who's going to be in charge of all the different movies and lectures and events coming to the theater. An architectural firm, Page and Turnbull, has been retained to carefully preserve the historic elements of the theater as part of the renovation process. This is a huge opportunity to bring back a staple cultural piece of the Pacific Heights neighborhood. I can't wait to check it out.
