San Francisco created outdoor drinking zones where people can buy and carry open alcohol at events. The Financial District zone drew tens of thousands of visitors and boosted local sales. The city is now proposing five more zones at Pier 39, SoMa, and the Mission.

San Francisco is betting big on outdoor drinking zones to revitalize the city. After a state law was passed that allows cities to establish outdoor areas where alcohol can be sold in connection with special events, the city enacted legislation that established several open container drinking areas throughout the city called entertainment zones. The first was in the financial district and has been wildly successful, bringing tens of thousands of visitors to the area and bolstering sales for local businesses. And earlier in April, after the city had already established two new entertainment zones in Cole Valley and at Thrive City near Chase Center, the city enacted new legislation proposing 5 new entertainment zones at Pier 39, SoMa, and in the Mission. These entertainment zones are really fun, and I'm excited to see more of them pop up all over the city and what events they do.
