Austin Klar shows how Building 12, a World War II shipyard structure at San Francisco's Pier 70, is being transformed into mixed-use space. The entire building is being raised ten feet to handle sea-level rise, with ground-floor retail and upper-floor artist studios.

An historic shipbuilding hub is being transformed into a brand new mixed-use community and event space, and it's shaping up to be an incredible project. Building 12 at San Francisco's Pier 70 is part of a 230,000-square-foot World War II shipyard production site that had fallen into a state of disrepair, but it's getting new life thanks to a multi-billion-dollar project underway at the historic pier held by Brookfield Properties, who are turning the former shipbuilding site into thousands of new homes, parks, restaurants, along the waterfront. And Building 12 is a staple of that redevelopment as one of the few remaining historic structures there, and the developer understood the importance of retaining its character while breathing new life into the building. They've carefully preserved so many historic elements and are even raising the structure 10 feet to account for sea level rise. Several tenants are already open at the mixed-use space and are bringing foot traffic to the area. There's also a loft on the upper floor that's reserved for artisans and maker studios. I absolutely love this project and think they've done an incredible job on the building. Let me know what you think in the comments and follow me for more Bay Area real estate.
