San Francisco backed off a plan to ban parking within 20 feet of crosswalks after drivers complained they'd be ticketed in unmarked zones. The city will now mark the prohibited areas before enforcing the rule.

San Francisco has done a complete 180 on its proposed daylighting law. There was a ton of controversy surrounding a new law that would prohibit parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk so we could increase visibility of incoming pedestrians. Valid concern for sure, but the rub here, aside from, you know, eliminating a bunch of parking spots, was the SFMTA planned to issue tickets to people who parked in unmarked spaces. So basically they were leaving it up to people driving to just figure out what 20 feet was and take a risk by parking close to that area. Even visitors who might not know about the rule could face penalties for parking in an unmarked spot. Seems like there was so much pushback on that rule that SF has basically postponed those plans to implement the new law, and instead they're going to be marking all prohibited zones over time. This is definitely the right move. I'm all for public safety, but if you're gonna start issuing fines to people, you need to clearly demarcate what they can and can't do.
