Align Real Estate and Albertsons plan to convert three San Francisco Safeway stores into housing: 370 units in Bernal Heights, 526 in the Richmond, and around 1,800 in Lower Fillmore. The projects aim to address the city's housing shortage as tech growth and improving conditions drive development.
Chapters
This is pretty wild. 3 different grocery stores in San Francisco are working on plans to convert their existing spaces into gigantic new housing developments. Developer Align Real Estate, working with Albertsons, the parent company of Safeway, have filed plans to convert 3 different Safeways, one on Mission Street in Bernal Heights, one on La Playa in the Richmond, and one on Fillmore in the Lower Fillmore area, into housing developments. Current proposals are to create 370 units at the Bernal Heights location, 526 units at the Richmond location, and 8,000 1,800 units at the Fillmore location. At a time when San Francisco desperately needs new housing as the city continues its comeback with improved city conditions coupled with the AI boom, projects like these are critical. Of course, there's going to be pushback given the sheer scale of these projects, and especially in locations like the Richmond, for example, that don't have as much large-scale development. So the iterations that are currently proposed probably won't be the final iterations to the extent they're approved at all. Definitely hope to see progress on these in the near future, and I'll keep you updated as plans progress. So follow Call me for more information.
