Hey, it's Brendan, and welcome to day two eight of my wellness masterclass. This is a huge topic today that we have to cover that will, just like all my other modules, make you feel really uncomfortable. But I hope that also gives you some insight into where you're at and how you feel in life. Because, my friend, I keep saying it, you deserve to feel a very vibrant and full and passionate and free life. And sometimes you can't do that unless we cover these constrictions that we've been covering. And in this topic, we're going to take that on today, we're going to talk about letting go and the importance of letting go in specific time zones of your life. The past, the present, and the future. And if you're a person who's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, Brendan, I got this one, hold on. This might be the video you really need to tune in on. Because what happens is we think we know a concept, but we don't practice it. Like I always say, common sense is not always common practice. And it's why so many potentially great people fail to realize their full greatness. And so let's talk about this one. Okay? Letting go. Why is this such an important topic? It's a huge topic because, listen, if all day long you're carrying around the baggage of the history of your life, the baggage of expectations of now, and the baggage of the worries in the future, of course that weighs you down. And what we know is if you don't practice those simple ideas of forgiveness, or freeing yourself mentally or emotionally in the moment, or loosening up the concerns about the future, you tend to be unhappy. Happiness studies have been directly correlated with a person's ability to let go of chaos, trauma, stress, challenges in their life. And why is that important? Because if you're unhappy, you enact worse behaviors. If you're unhappy or tripped up about the past, of course it's easier to use food as comfort. Of course it's easier to say, I don't feel like working today. Of course it's easier to think other people can't understand you. So why even try and connect when you're unhappy? It hurts your emotional, your social, your physical well being. And this course is about wellness and your well being. So we gotta talk about it. So I'd love to give you a framework to think about how to let go in these different time zones of your life so that you feel more psychologically happy in the moment and you make better decisions for yourself and frankly, you just feel better. And come on, after all this time, don't you deserve to feel happy? I mean, after all these years after all these struggles, after all these challenges, don't you finally deserve to feel that like release and that joy that can come in the moment if you choose it? I think most people do, but they carrying a lot of stuff from the past. So that's why this work is important. So let's talk about the past. When psychologists look at what makes people happiest and they ask about their orientation towards the past, it's not what most often we think about. We think, well, of course they're just happy about the past. But what does that mean, to be happy about the past? Well, first it means that you've dealt with any major issues of the past that might be causing bad behavior today. Now I have to share this with you. If the past is still tripping you up in such a way today that you know you're self sabotaging, it's really important to see a professional psychologist or therapist. I'm not that, okay. I help a lot of high performers release the past, but I am not a therapist. So my suggestion to you is if you know already, stuff in high school or elementary school or your young childhood is like poisoning your today, see a professional about that. That will help. My job is to share the research. And the research suggests that what happens is when people are really happy today, what they've done in the past is the way they look at the past is almost through three lenses. One, when they think about the past, there's a fondness to their overall past meaning. It's almost like, have you heard that phrase nostalgia before? That word nostalgia? They kind of like, they're like, they have a fondness. There's a sense of like beauty and fondness about their experiences. When they think about things in their childhood, even though their childhood could have been absolutely as traumatic and turmoil or chaos or stressful as yours and mine, they kind of look back and they're like, though. But I appreciate those. I see those moments where, you know, maybe I connected with my friend or my, you know, this sibling was good to me or this neighbor was good. They have made like, when they think about it, they don't go right to the stress points. They go to those points that they have nostalgia for. In all the chaos, they kind of pick out the nostalgic fond moments. Oh, I remember how, you know, my mom was kind to me. I remember how that teacher, you know, made me feel like I was included. I remember that person who gave me a chance. And that's where their memory steers. Instead of their memory steering immediately to the Trauma, the turmoil, the challenges. They have chosen to remember things with fondness. They also. The second lens is appreciation. They appreciate the opportunities and the breaks that they had. Like, when you ask them, they're like, oh, I feel so lucky that, you know, in high school I met this person. Or I'm so lucky that this teacher kept me in school, or I'm so lucky that, you know, this person opened this door for me, or I'm so glad I met that person. Their tendency is to see things they appreciate that happened for them, specifically in people they met with or opportunities they have. I'll give you an example. For me, like, if you say, brendan, tell me about your past. One of the things I immediately go to in my mind was a teacher I had named Linda Ballou. I was going to drop out of high school because I didn't feel like I really fit in with the kids there. And I felt like I was upset with the school administration because I'd gotten detention. And then at some point, I got kicked out of school, and I didn't feel like they understood me. And I just was like, I was going to quit. And I happened to meet a high school journalism teacher who said, hey, Brendan, this experience you're having, have you ever written about it? I said, what? She said, I think she should write something about it. And I ended up going on a trip. And she said, let me see your pictures from the trip. And I said, what do you mean, see pictures? I showed her pictures. She says, you have some potential to, you know, these are some good pictures. Why don't you join our journalism class? You could write some articles and shoot some pictures. Do you like those things? And I said, well, I do like those things. I joined the school newspaper, and little did I know at that moment that Linda happened to be one of the most decorated and rewarded high school journalism teachers in the world. And my second year there, we won the number one newspaper in the entire country. I grew up in this tiny town. We didn't even have the tools, the materials and computers. Other classes did. And every time I think about my past, I think about Linda and where would I be today if she hadn't made me come to that class, if she hadn't told me I had potential in those areas, if she hadn't made me stay in school. Because then I went to college and got my master's degree, and then I went on to have a good career doing things that really relied on writing and visual art. What would have happened if I hadn't met her now at that same time I met her I had abusive people in my life. At that same time I met her I had a person in a relationship cheat on me. At the same time I met her, I had someone crash into one of my cars. I had same time I met her I got fired from a job. There was chaos all around. But when I think about my past, I pinpoint that spot of appreciation for meeting her in that opportunity. Does that make sense? It's just a different way of thinking about the past. And then the third way that high performers tend to think about the past is through the lens of satisfaction. They go, you know what? I'm satisfied with the past. And that is almost impossible to do. It is so hard to do. Cause we all think we weren't loved enough, we didn't get enough, we didn't belong enough, we didn't get enough breaks. And that enough story that you tell yourself, did you know the enough story, you didn't get enough in your past? That is your hang up. That's the baggage. That's the thing we got to let go of. For most people, including those who do therapeutic work, what they come to find out is because they didn't feel like they didn't get enough, they don't feel enough today. Their baggage is they didn't find satisfaction in going, you know what? God, universe, luck graced me with just enough of what I needed to be ready today. So their hang up, the things that they have to let go of. And the hardest thing to tell someone is what you have to let go of. That forgiveness side, that side of saying, you know, I'm going to release from the past is that story the narrative you are telling yourself, the self talk that you have that says you didn't get what you deserved, you didn't get enough. And it's unfair. Because when you carry along unfair, what does that do for you today? If you feel you've been cheated from a good life, from your past, how do you feel about life today? If you feel like you didn't get what you deserved your whole life, how do you feel? How do you show up today? It's something that we don't realize is so tied to our overall wellness and our well being is how much we're hanging on to this old story of I didn't get enough, she didn't love me enough, he didn't give me enough, they didn't like me enough. And that has depleted your sense of self today. And you're the only one who can have satisfaction and at some point, it's a very simple spiritual practice to go, I am where I am today. I received what was needed. Grace guided me here. Those were not easy times, but. But I'm gonna find my moments of fondness and my moments of appreciation because I'm enough and I have been served enough. And I'm where I am today by some other thing that maybe I don't understand today. Maybe that's God's grace, Maybe that's luck. Maybe it's the chaos of the universe, but you can't predict and you can't know it. But what you can do is say, maybe as an adult, it's time. I'm satisfied with my life. Because if I'm always dissatisfied with the past, that dissatisfaction creates an edge in you, and it creates a need in you. And who wants to hang out with needy people? I bet you don't. I don't. So I think it's important for you to go, am I needy? Because in the past I didn't get enough, and now I just have to have everything. Because we should be also free in the moment to enjoy life. And that's hard if psychologically, you're all bent out of whack because in the past you didn't get what you felt you deserved. And again, maybe you need time to process that reality and that truth. And that might take therapeutic work. And I'm a person who believes that we have a terrible stigma in our culture about mental health. I think we have a terrible stigma about seeing therapists. I'm a person who cheers it on because I've worked with so many extremely successful people who. That was part of their process. They needed to do that. So if that's for you, I encourage that. What I have learned from the research on high performers and coaching them is that if we can get them to point when they think about their past, they immediately go to target the things they're fond of or they appreciated or have an overall sense of like, I'm good, I'm satisfied, that whatever had to happen had to happen to bring me to today. If we can get them there, it releases that edge. And now we can be in the moment, and then we can be in the moment. Now we can talk about your present time zone.
Hey, all, let me jump into this episode real quick with something I usually don't do, which is kind of like a. I guess they call it a mid roll ad or something. But I decided to do this right now because I'm literally at home working during this coronavirus. Pandemic. And it's really ignited a lot of questions from my community about how do I do that? You know, how am I thinking through my career? How am I thinking through building my personal brand and my online sales during a time in which, yeah, we're home? Like, how does my industry or my career or my approach to it function? And so what I want to let you know is if you did not know, I do have a program for that. It's called the Influencer Business Program. And it's where I'm like teaching you.
This is how I do everything.
I teach you how to grow your personal brand, monetize content, launch campaigns, books, courses, webcast, live webcasts, subscriptions. I mean, it's about basically how do you grow your audience in online sales faster no matter where you are, no matter if you're starting or not? Because clearly you've seen me do it. Not just with the podcast, but with 300 million video views, 25 multi million dollar online course launches, three New York Times bestsellers, 5 million fans on Facebook. I mean, you've seen the covers of the magazines and the chart topping stuff and the, you know, if you're on the email list of millions of email subscribers, or you've seen the social media posts from other influencers, you know, joining my masterminds and asking me how I do it all, it's like I've been blessed with all of that. And I just feel like maybe this is the time that you learn to build your personal brand, that you finally get yourself up online and making real online sales. Because, you know, I've been doing it for 14 years, every day, full time, and I've spent, you know, literally tens and tens of millions of dollars on figuring it out, on running ads, on learning which campaigns work, which ones don't, on starting from nothing, pushing every button myself, to finally growing it bigger and bigger and bigger. And people always want to know, what's your marketing strategy? What is the modern thought leader business model that can be, you know, built and monetized quickly? You know, how do you tell your story or build credibility? And how do you get people to buy from you? Or what should you sell, what should you not sell? Or how do you create great content or online curriculum that sells? Or what are funnels and launches and how do they work? And what should I do first, second and third? And if you had to start over, Brendan, what are the four things you should do or what tools and systems use? How do you get promotional partners? How do you do online challenges how do you create lifelong fans? I mean, I'm just literally sitting here thinking this is what I do every day. And if you would like to get a seven day crash course, that and then even live monthly marketing training for me, that's what we now call my Influencer Business program. And you can literally just go to influencerbusinessprogram.com and it'll take you to the page to learn about that. Now, it's for serious people only. Obviously you hear me during this, you know, this global sort of shutdown and pandemic with coronavirus, giving away one of my courses with the wellness Masterclass, but this one's for serious players. There is a charge to it obviously where I go live every single month. And I also give you some of my best online training so that you can get your personal brand growing, grow that audience, make more online sales. So if you're into that type of thing, go to influencer businessprogram.com I mean that's influencer businessprogram.com altogether, influencer business program. And you can learn about the multiple membership levels. I kind of made it affordable. If you want to do a monthly or if you want to take the whole year or you want the advanced pro program, you can learn all about that. Influencer business program.com. my main message to this audience and everyone I'm talking to right now is if you have not done the work to get yourself online, if you feel like you're falling behind in the digital era, if you don't have recurring revenue and every single day with some type of online sales, if you don't get the hint now, you're never going to get the hint. I mean, you need to do that now in this growing pandemic. I genuinely believe we are going to see such a disruption in the economy in the coming months. And those who have figured out pretty things to grow their Instagram, but never built the business model, never learn recurring revenue, never learn how to do real launches that bring in the real money that allows them to have the living. They're really going to struggle this year. We're going to see people who have, you know, no fans, no audience, no email list really struggle. But we're also going to see people who have no online sales really struggle. And we're really going to see people who have even millions of fans, but who never figured out the monetization completely fall apart. So please go to influencerbusinessprogram.com if you are in this industry or you know, it's time to build your personal brand and get those online sales going because listen, the economy is going to be really difficult. But also more importantly than that, listen, it's time to share your voice to lead, to be a role model, to share your expertise, your life wisdom, your perspective about things with more people. Because we need more leaders out there sharing positive messages of hope, of strength, of optimism for the future. Because we will make it through this. And it will be the influencers and the voices out there sharing our thoughts, our wisdom and our advice that will help carry and set the tone towards a better Future. Influencer Business Program.com we'd love to see you in that program. Influencer business program.com with that, let's jump back into the Wellness masterclass.
Your present time zone is all about learning to be free and spontaneous in the moment. Happy people are more present people. And this is not like a spiritual precept. It's actual study. It's like the ability to be free in the moment. They can study in lots of different ways. As an example, incompetency studies, the ability to be able to go from one task to another, your ability to switch from those and be like light or what they call often psychologically adaptive correlates with your long term success. But most people can't do that because they do one thing and they're still holding it as they go to do the other thing. So they don't perform well. For example, have you ever walked out of a meeting and that meeting sucks, sucked and you had to go into another meeting and you took that bad mood into the new meeting and you recognize you didn't perform well in that meeting because the past meeting, that's your inability to be in the moment, in flow and in real time spontaneously adaptive to know that meeting number one is not meeting number two. So between those two rooms or between those two hours, I'm going to release the tension that came up from that. So please remember we talked about that in this course, that release activity between that release tension activity that you can do between other things. I think that could change your life so dramatically because it will condition you and teach you to be more present. Right now in the moment. I'm not thinking about the next video I need to do or about the last video I did. I'm here with you in this conversation. If I wasn't able to do that, I couldn't teach well. Well, you can't influence well if you're thinking about tomorrow or you're stuck up in the past, there has to be something to you new training that you learn to be present in the moment. For some people, they do that through paying attention to their breath. And in the moment, throughout the day, they're just connecting with breath. Other people, they kind of prime it by meditating and then going to the major activities, you know, like a Jerry Seinfeld or an Ellen or an Oprah who will meditate. To be in a good place, to be able to do what they do, that's cool for you, that might just mean saying, you know what? I need to be a little more, like, spontaneous here and not worried about everything else. I think the greatest gift we can ever give people is not presence, but our presence right us there fully with them. And that means letting go of everything that happened last hour. That means letting go of everything that happened last week or last year or in your childhood. To dance freely in the moment is the hardest spiritual practice in the world. And that's why when people get into wellness, the first thing they often hear about is being more present and being here now and following that guidance that we've learned from so many spiritual teachers from lots of different disciplines and beliefs, that the ability to center ourselves in chaos by being more present is the superpower of superpowers. It is the first principle. Because if we can't be here, we can't appreciate here. And if we can't appreciate here, we can't live in gratitude. If we can't live in gratitude, we don't have reverence for life. And it's a downward spiral from there. I think it's important to learn to be here in the moment. And now, if we can let go of all the stressors by doing the release meditation techniques, or let go of the stressors by finding our own breath or finding that practice of being present now we also need to learn to let go of the future expectations that are stressing us. See, when you say let go to people, they often only think about the past. We gotta think about the present. We gotta think about the future. You've got a lot of hopes and dreams that are really important. You got a lot of steps. You got. You got a lot of projects. Your calendar is full through the year. Maybe you can't be living in that right now. The hardest thing for high performers to do is to let go of what I call an esoteric future stress. It's like the anticipation stress. It's like, have you ever started the day and you knew you had so much to do during the day that you were already stressed before you actually did anything? That's called anticipation stress. You need to learn to deal with that because isn't it true tomorrow and weeks ahead they're always going to be busy. And if you keep letting anticipation stress poison you now, good luck when you become more successful. Because guess what, as you become more successful, more people want your time. You're going to take on bigger projects to make a greater difference in the world and make your difference and change the world. As you want to change the world more, you got to deal with more of the world and it puts more stuff on your plate tomorrow and the weeks ahead. If you saw my calendar, you would cry for me. But I don't think of that that way. Cause I have no attachment to tomorrow's activities, needs or projects. It doesn't live here today. If I let it live here today, it would stress me out. I know it's there, but I don't let the emotional energy there. Here's what I will say. I'll work the work when the work is needed. It's not here right now. Brendon, aren't you worried about your travel schedule? I go like, why would I worry? There is no power in worry. No power in worry. Brendan, aren't you worried about that big project that's due in five weeks? Aren't you worried the publisher's calling. Aren't you worried that this celebrity needs you? Why would I worry? What benefit is that going to give me in service to them or in service to my well being and my health? Now worry is the great destroyer of happiness. It happens day by day, minute by minute, minute by minute by minute. And some people go, well, Brendan, I'm just a natural worrier. I'm like, no, you are lacking discipline in teaching yourself to be present. You didn't grow up a natural worrier. It doesn't happen. Like, it really doesn't. Look at infants, they're not worried about six weeks from now. Have you ever met a toddler who's like, mama, we need to talk about When I'm five, they don't do that. It's not part of the human condition. We learn worry patterns from those around us and then we adopt them unconsciously and that becomes a routine. So as an adult, what I want to teach you to do is, hey, let me pay attention to my worry. And so each day what I'd love to ask you to do as part of your practice is could you ask at the end of the day was I worried about anything today? That was a future problem. Now when I ask that to People, they always say, well, yeah, of course I do, Brendon. And isn't it responsible to worry about my future finances? Cause I got the kids, they gotta go to college. Isn't it okay to worry about it? I'm like, no, it's, it's great to anticipate it, to think about it, to strategically play the game, to be a strategic thinker all day long, babe, A worrier, not so much. I can think about tons of things in my future without bringing worry about that emotional activity into my heart now. Cause think about it, that's a lot of baggage too. All the worries about those future activities entering my heart now. Steals the joy, the presence and the spontaneity. Right now you only have so much room in your heart. And if that heart is carrying all this worry about the future, you're less generous now in the moment. So, my friends, you got to start looking at your life and going, okay, what can I let go of the past? But not just letting go of situations, but also learning new lenses. How can I go? What am I fond of? What do I appreciate? Gosh, what am I so satisfied with about my life so far in the moment? To literally be here now by connecting with your breath and being mindful of what you're seeing and experiencing and giving and projecting now and then in the future, being able to disconnect from the emotions of what might happen and instead just recognize the tasks that are ahead and deal with them when you get there. If you can do these simple activities, I promise you your overall well being flourishes. Because now you're experiencing that great thing I told you about. One of the main drivers of the human condition. We want personal freedom. If you are free in the moment, you're more adaptive and we can tell you'll succeed more. If you're free in the moment, you're happier, which means you'll be more generous with other people and you'll be more satisfied with your life. And if you're free in the moment, you're more creative, you contribute better, you give better, you do your job and your work better. If you're free in the moment, there's a sense of wellness that is just like, oh man, I'm here right now. I feel so good in this moment, regardless of the past, regardless of the future. Thank you, God. Thank you, blessing. Thank you, universe. Thank you for the second of freedom that I can experience now. I want you to have more of those moments and you have that opportunity if you choose. I hope you enjoyed this session, my friend. What are your practices for dealing with the past? Why can't you take anything you've learned in your whole life about career or business or wellness or health or just living a good life, being a good parent, you know, chasing your dreams?
Why can't you take that advice?
Structure it, build a personal brand around it, build some online digital content around it, sell it, get recurring revenue and build something that not only carries you through with digital sales through this scary economy, but more importantly sets you up to share your voice and make a difference at a time when it matters more than ever?
You clearly hear I'm passionate about this.
