Embrace The Suck!

Brendon Burchard argues that embracing difficult tasks at work and in life leads to higher performance and satisfaction. He emphasizes full engagement and presence as keys to getting through the hard stuff.
You want to have more joy and satisfaction at work, you need to engage it differently, even when it sucks. How many of you have had, like, three months of doing suck work? Anybody? Just, like, the last few months, you're like, God, this sucks. Anybody? Yeah, you should celebrate that. Say, that's me. It's totally okay. When you have suck work sometime, how do you engage with it? Because what most people do, they hate it. They hate the struggle, they hate the suck. But if you ever worked with elite army people, they have this great saying, right? Especially the Green Berets. I love that saying. They say you have to embrace the suck. And I was like, ooh, that's good, guys. You gotta embrace the suck. Because you know what? If you avoid it or you hate it? Look, anything you pour hate on grows into a monster. Anything you grow hate on. If you hate taking out the garbage, guess what? Taking out the garbage is to you now a monster. It's just garbage. But you hate taking out the garbage, so now it becomes a thing to you and your spouse. The garbage became a monster between you and your spouse. Really, it's because someone applied hate on that garbage, right? You apply hate to anything, it grows into a monster. You hate the commute to work, and you got to do it every day. How does that feel? You hate doing email and you got to do it every day. How does that feel? You hate bringing that topic up with your spouse. How does that feel? You gotta be really careful. We got into a society where hate is such a casual word and people just, oh, I hate this. I hate that. I hate this. Oh, I hate this line at Starbucks. You hate the line at Starbucks? Hate. Really? Then how does that feel having to wait three people deep for your caramel macchiato or thingy? But I don't know. Obviously I'm not allowed to drink much caffeine. Can't you imagine? Oh, my God. Full engagement. You have to be present again and fully engage what you are doing. Really embrace it. Remember I was in the cage life. So what did I want to do? I wanted to escape reality, the charged life. High performance. Boom. Embrace that. Pull it in. Own it. It's your life. You built it. Engage it. Because if you don't engage, that means you're disengaged. And you cannot turn a crank and change something when it's disengaged. You break a lever from the system. You can't change the system. If you disengage that lever, you plug that lever back in, you can change the system again. You got to plug back in. You want to go to a higher level, you got to get plugged back in energetically, emotionally, spiritually. You gotta get here and you gotta get present and you gotta do it this weekend because you can't fake it in a room like this. I can't fake it where it is 60 rows deep. You could feel any second that if I'm with you and I'm engaged and I'm having fun and everything's great, we're learning, we're going together, we're growing together, and I'm with you, and I'm with you, and I'm with you and I'm with you and all of a sudden I just. How many felt that? Could you feel it in the back rows? Raise your hand. Yeah, look at that. They're 100ft away, but they can feel it. And you think you're fooling your spouse when she's three feet away from you. Dude, she knows if you're plugged in or not. Usually ladies cheer there. I don't know what happened. Maybe I didn't. I don't. But you look, you know it too. You know it too. If you are not fully engaged, your spouse feels it, your team feels it. What the world really needs more of is you fully engaged again, showing up, ready to bring it in that moment. If you're there, say, I'm here. Turn the person to the left, right, shake them and say, time to bring it. Thanks for watching. Make sure you subscribe to my new podcast, the Brendon Show.
