How Distractions Destroy Your Dreams

Brendon TEST Burchard on why distractions, discouragement, and drama keep you from the life you want. He argues that living extraordinarily means protecting your focus and energy from the things that pull you away from what actually matters.
Everybody can easily get average, but to get extraordinary, you're going to have to deal with these things. Your distractions, discouragement, then the drama. If this steals so much of your life, you don't get to experience the richness of this often enough. I want you to set your dreams. I want you to become ultra successful in whatever way you design. I want each day to feel that everyday richness. At this day and age, with the entire world at your fingertips, you're bored. No, you are disinterested and checked out. If you're organizing your life, what are you organizing for? What's the activities? What's the richness? What's the. What are we going for here? I just want to share big picture. First, let me give you this idea, I'm going to revisit idea and I'll come right back to that. You all remember my dreams equation. If you don't let me give it to everybody. Your dreams in your life have to be greater. Must be greater than your distractions. Your dreams must be greater than discouragement. Your dreams must be greater than the drama all around you. So that's the test. Will your dreams be bigger than these things? See, Instagram tries to take me. It's never won a battle, not once. Ever. Discouragement. The devil tries to get me all the time. Puts all those doubts in, makes me feel bad, makes me feel unfair, siloed out, mistreated. All the time, never wins. The drama comes, it goes like waves, like people in and out. Never wins because I got something over here. And when you got a dream and you own that dream and my dream, my biggest dream, what is it? I told you. A life of aliveness and connection and meaningful pursuits and growth. Now, I might have chose a profession that's a writer, a coach, a trainer. That's my professions. But for me, all of it was a dream life. I wanted to have. I wanted to have an extraordinary life. I mean, everybody can easily get average, but to get extraordinary, you're going to have to deal with these things. I tell people all the time, you're not probably lacking project management skills. You can make a checklist, you can estimate time. What you might be struggling with more is these are winning more than this. I need you to organize your life so that this wins more for you. That this. Whether that's a purpose, a mission, whether it's an idea, whether it's a profession, whether it's a specific accolade, whether it is something like, like an island or a new house or a jet, those are all okay too. I have no judgment. You're the person who has decided what your dream is and they'll move, but you won't achieve them if these keep winning. The reason we were trying to teach you about life philosophy and, and the principles and the practices and the priorities is because too often this wasn't the priority anymore. This was the trap. If this steals so much of your life, you don't get to experience the richness of this often enough. This becomes singular and one time disconnected achievement. It's not a dream life. It's why psychologists and coaches often talk about the idea of coherence or the integrity of a story. Right? To know that all these efforts you've been doing, it's lining up for something even if you don't know what it is. It's like Steve Jobs said, sometimes you can't connect the dots until you look backwards. If you can own your dream and you really own it, then distractions don't own you anymore. Then those feelings of discouragement, you can feel them, they just don't own you anymore. I'm not that person who says you'll never have negative feelings. I'm just here to say don't let them own you. I feel negative things all the time, but they don't own me. Does that make sense? My intention, my dreams, my purpose, my mission that owns the day. Not kidding you. A person who has the opportunity to build a billion dollar startup. One of their lead investors who put in $75 million into their company hired me for a million dollars for four weeks. Not bad. I went out having no idea what I got myself into, frankly. And it was a very simple set of conversations. And here's what I found. This founder who just remarkably raised at that point maybe $150 million for an idea. I go over there, you cannot make this up. Especially for those who know. I don't know anything about television. You know, this is a true story. Because I was like, I go over there, we, we work. And I said, you know, I'm just going to hang out with you. So I hung out with this person and at dinner, as they're watching dinner to decompress, they watch a show where all these mean women from LA in a real estate company are screaming at each other, trash talking each other and he gets absorbed. I'm sitting next to him and he his wave, I'm just hanging out. His way of dealing with life is to turn to the drama of women he does not know screaming at each other for reasons he does not understand. In an industry he's not even in. Which, by the way, I'm all for. Like, hey, I watch sci fi too. Doesn't mean I'm an alien. So I'm totally. I'm not. I'm okay with you checking out to decompress. But I also believe there's moments in time in your life where drama does not add to the abundant spiritual empowering energy that it manifests. A billion dollar company that it takes to manifest a repaired marriage that it takes to manifest a healthier body. You can get sucked into the drama of life and TV and social media and politics today and you can spend hours there. But don't pretend that your hours there are a silo. Your hours in that drama and tripe and trope and nonsense, that energy comes into your choices. That energy of watching those people snipe at each other will show up in the conference room for this young man and he'll derail the whole company. He won't even know where it came from because you're unconsciously programming yourself with what you're consuming. I know you all know this, but the world's lost this. And it is giving so many hours to this that I have huge concern for it. I have so much concern for it and I don't want it to happen at all. So if you're going to organize something, organize more around this plus positive energy. Get around that positive energy. Create that positive energy. Do your meditation, exercise, diet, sleep, great religion, whatever you have to. Like if more. What if more days felt like this? What would it sound like, ladies and gentlemen? Shout it out. More days. Like more days. It's so simple. Now, I only wrote two things. More days with your dreams in it and more days with positive energy. So that for me, that's winning. What is it for you? What's the equation for you? Right? I gave you lots of different ones to open your brain. My job is to open up the gates here for you. So what are some of yours? What's coming to your mind? What needs to be in each day more? Is it connection with your family? Is it working on your craft or your art? What needs to get in there more that's more important than any email strategy? Someone's going to tell you to stop doing or some project management tool that you're going to have, or some AI that you're going to have? Cause even if AI does all your work for you, there you are still standing, going, what do I want out of life? I want you to set your dreams. I want you to become ultra successful in whatever way you design. We have ultra. We have people who are in my industry, people who aren't. We have people who are in software and writing books. We have people who are running marathons. We have people who are in transition, figuring out what ha. What do they do now that their kids are gone or they left that job. It's a community of people who are just striving. They're just striving. But my hope for them and my hope for each of you, whether you're an ultra or in any of my other groups with Growth Day or just in my personal brand, I want you to touch your dreams more. I want each day to feel that everyday richness. I want you to be bold enough to look back at the last month and the last summer and this last year and go, what did that feel like to me? Is there a cohesive story there? Am I. Am I trying to do something? The roadmap for you is more of you into your days, more of your dream, more of your engagement, more of your joy, more of your confidence, more of the things that matter to you, your life agenda. I want you to have that joy and that experience that your days aren't just blazing by. I was with somebody the other day who said they're bored. You're bored at this day and age, with the entire world is your fingertips. You're bored. No, you are disinterested and checked out. You aren't bored. Two different things. You checked out, check back in. The whole world is at your fingertips. The whole world is on your phone. I've met very few people who are bored who are connected to these two things. When you're connected to these things, it doesn't mean you can't have a down day, doesn't mean you can't recover day. Have a spa day. I go to lots of spas. I've never been bored at a spa. They're so fun. I love getting in the sauna and they have all those magazines you take in the sauna. You just sitting there feeling like you're gonna die for 30 minutes in the sauna. Then you get a massage and someone's like screaming like, ah. I don't. I don't even got bored. I don't get bored playing golf with the friends. I don't get bored mountain biking. I don't get bored reading books that someone spent decades of their life to figure out the words in this book. I don't get bored. I don't get bored listening to people talk about fascinating things. Your life, your destiny, is not boredom. And if you're stuck in boredom, you got to get back into everything you learned today. Because life is short, and life is now.
