Brendon TEST Burchard talks about his 20-year journey in personal development and the launch of Growth Day, a platform offering coaching, community, and tools for daily growth. He centers the work on aliveness, connection, and meaningful pursuits.
Foreign hey, my friends, it's Brendon Richard and welcome to the Brendan Show. Hey y', all, it's Brendan and I'm excited to do this special episode for you in a rare just conversation about my career and about an exciting announcement that I have. And this is going to be a little bit unusual in that I don't have a framework to share with you or specific teaching points, but rather I want to tell you about where I'm at in my career, what I'm excited about in these coming years and about the launch of a brand new brand called Growth Day. You know, it's always been my philosophy that, that if we can engage our personal development, if we can seek self mastery in our lives, then we receive all the spoils of that. We receive the joy, the abundance, the confidence, the great relationships, the incredible achievements, the sense of fulfillment and peace that comes along with really knowing ourselves and constantly developing ourselves and demanding much more of ourselves than others would. And it's been 20 years. This year and 2021 will be my 20th year in the industry. My first book came out in 2001 called the Student Leadership Guide. And that set me on my path to study leadership and personal development to make it a career to try and figure out how to write books, sell books, do videos, create courses, do everything we now know as the influencer industry. At the time it was just I was a young kid trying to figure things out. And so today I'd like to share with you some of the epiphanies I had along the way in not just my career, but in my life of trying to help people engage personal development at the highest levels. And you know, because many of you know, I've been so blessed with millions of you students and clients around the world, let alone all of our, you know, tens of millions of fans, but also getting to work with some of the highest level achievers in the world as their personal high performance coach, as well as our group coaching experiences where I've been guiding communities to reach mastery in their lives for over 15 years professionally. So in the 20th year, I thought I really want to do something special and I wanted to galvanize everything I've learned to serve you at honestly a higher level and in a more personal level like this, which many of you guys asked for me to do more personal podcasts and videos and conversations with other people which I'm about to do. And we are going to be launching with this new brand called Growth Day. So let me tell you about Growth Day and the genesis of it, and also about a little bit about weaving maybe my story throughout so you see how we've arrived at it, and then tell you about the exciting things we have coming up all throughout 2021 for you with Growth Day. You know, if you followed my story for a long time, you know that I've probably had, you know, three major epiphanies in my life that really made me dedicate myself to personal development and better habits and wanting to strive for a great and contributing life. And the first one was my car accident. And I can't believe it, but that, you know, that was 1996 now, so I can't even do the math how long ago that was. But my car accident came at a very pivotal time in my life. I was a depressed and suicidal young man following the breakup of the first woman I ever loved, my high school sweetheart. And it sent me into depression and suicidal thoughts and planning. And fortunately, I didn't take my life. And, you know, reading and marketing really changed my life because I saw in the student newspaper an ad to go down to the Dominican Republic, and I had the opportunity to go with an entrepreneur I knew and a friend I knew and had a great opportunity down there. And what happened was unrelated to my suicidal planning. I was in a car accident. And that car accident at the time, if you've heard my story before, I won't belabor it too much here, but it taught me that when really, when we are confronted with our death, we will ask questions of ourselves to evaluate whether or not we were happy with our life. And you'll ask questions to really note, were you happy with the way that you lived your life? And it turned out the questions that I found that I was going to ask was, did I live my life, life fully? Because I hadn't lived. I'd been thinking about taking my life. Did I love others because my heart had been broken and I was unhappy and did I matter? Did I make a difference? Because at the end of the day, and for me, what I thought was the last moment of my life, standing on the crumpled hood of this car after the car accident, after the car had rolled several times off this highway, I pulled myself through the windshield of the car and I looked down at all of the blood and I thought it was the end. And I remember just feeling like, did I even matter? Was there a reason I was here? Was there a purpose to it? And what that taught me, I guess the epiphany that came from that was the power of intention. Because that's what those questions are, right? My questions have always been, did I live? Did I love? Did I matter? And I try every day to live my life so that I'm happy with those questions, because I know that someday I'll face my death again and I'll wonder, did I live this life and did I love others and did I make a difference? And so I strive every day to do that. That's the power of intention. And in 20 years, you can achieve a lot of things if you're highly intentional. The second big epiphany I had was in writing the motivation manifesto. I realize that what a lot of people need in their life is motivation. They won't say that they need it. And a lot of people make fun of motivation. You don't need motivation. Motivation comes and goes. And then they'll pitch you on the idea of basically what is actually motivation, which is you need that sense of hunger, that sense of drive, that sense of intention, that sense of purpose that lights the flame within, that gives you that sense of drive, that sense of, I want to do things. And the reason most people have motivation is they've structured their entire life to suck it away. They're living a life not of motivation, but of obligation to false narratives and to fake deadlines and to needless things that don't bring them any joy or fulfillment. And so I realized people didn't just need motivation first, they needed a revolution. They needed to reclaim their power, reclaim their life, to start over and sense that drive and that importance again. And I can't tell you how important that was as epiphany, because it was true for me, too. I had achieved outward success in my life as an author and a coach and a trainer. I went from literally working at this little side desk table in a tiny apartment I was living in with my then girlfriend, now my wife, Denise, you guys know. And then the first book came out. Life's golden ticket in terms of our commercial success. First book. And I didn't know how to market it, didn't know how to sell it. And I really wanted to figure those things out. I figured out marketing and selling and what we now call the thought leader industry. And it took off. Everything was going great. I had another accident in 2011 in another country. Apparently I shouldn't leave the country. And I ended up with a brain injury. I was riding an ATV and it wrecked, or I should say, I wrecked it. And I had post concussive syndrome and tbi. And I really struggled for two or three years, even though I Had all the, quote, external success. I didn't feel the motivation within. I knew I needed a revolution. I needed to change things. And that's what was the genesis of the motivation manifesto. I wanted to understand how do leaders talk about revolution and how can I bring that into our personal lives so that we can seek what I call personal freedom. And that personal freedom is what we all want. We want to be free to pursue the things that matter to us. And we want to have a sense of freedom, of authenticity, to be who we really are. And that was another epiphany. But then I realized, well, you can give people lots of motivation and drive, but then still they need the habits. They need what we now call high performance habits. In the research and in popular culture. High performance habits are the very things that help you live a more, I would say, not only high achieving life, but a life filled with well being and positive relationships. In other words, how do you have success? Well, you got to practice these habits, but how do you have success in a way in which you enjoy your life and your relationships? Those are high performance habits. So my three epiphanies were really about helping people with intention, realizing at the end of your life you're going to ask questions. So figure out what those questions are now and live your life intentionally so you're happy with the answers. My life was about motivation, giving people the drive, the revolution in their life to find personal freedom. And it was about developing that high performance habits, that level of self mastery and achievement that is so rarely attained. And in all of that work, you saw me roll out, you know, YouTube and podcasts and videos and 20 plus online courses and you know, dozens of fan pages on Facebook and millions of this and eight live seminars a year sold out year after year. I mean, it was unbelievably, it was a blessing for the last, you know, especially I think of like the last, oh, 17 years where I've done this full time is like all I do. It's been a game changer for me. But what I realized along the way was how much direction people needed, but how much, you know, drive and discipline they really wanted to have in their life. And I realized that you can give them all the things, but there has to be something, there was something missing and I couldn't figure it out. And I'll give you an example of the problem I was having. Like, I have a coaching community and you know, a lot of people in my coaching community, they've been with us for years, but tons of people come in and they're tried out for a month, they come out for two months, and they're like, yeah, okay. And they go off to the next new shiny thing. But they won't dedicate themselves to self mastery. And you and I both know that the people who give time and investment on the daily to their personal development live a higher quality of life. It's just when you dedicate yourself to self awareness and self mastery, you have a better quality of life. But I couldn't figure out what the vehicle needed to be for that. And so Denise and I were walking here in Portland. I'm sorry, here in Puerto Rico. And we were having a walk. And I remember the exact tree we were walking under. We walked under this palm tree. And I was telling her, I don't understand why some people come in and they only say two or three months. Is it me? You know, do they need something different? Like what do we need to do here? And I said, well, one, I think the challenge has been I always used to do my programming, my curriculum, my training on different days of the month based on basically, honestly, my event schedule. But guess what happened in 2021? Our live events went away. And now I had more time. For example, I would never do live coaching on usually Mondays or Thursdays or the weekends, because I was traveling all the time for our eight live events. And then I was speaking at dozens of major conferences and arenas throughout the country or the world also. So I couldn't schedule the same day. And I realized what people need is they need the same day for growth. They need a growth day. And my mind just lit up. They need dedicated days for personal development. And you know what they need? I have a moment of just humility here. It's like they need more than just me. You know, for a lot of people who come and stay, they love the approach to high performance. They love my approach to coaching. They love the challenges, the confrontations, the curriculum and the community. But at the same time, they need other voices. And if we didn't learn anything in 2020, it was about the celebration of other voices too. And I thought, okay, I need to broaden my coaching community and bring in other names and other experts, But I want to bring in the best of the best. I want to create a platform for world class personal development that is, yes, coaching. And yes, me and other of the greatest personal development coaches alive today, the leading motivators, the leading thinkers in psychology, personal development, self help, personal transformation. But I also need to create some tools. I need to create a new kind of community I need to create new kind of content. And so that epiphany under that palm tree walking in Puerto Rico popped in my mind. They need a day for growth. They need a growth day. We're gonna make Growth Day centered around this idea that, well, every day is a great day to grow, right? So any day you want to engage with, awesome. But we're gonna create days of the month that that is when, you know, you do your personal development, just like everyone knows on the 15th of April they do their taxes here in the United States. Well, guess What? On the 1st of every month, we begin the month together. We set our intention together, we set our goals together. We do our networking with high achievers around the world. So our community grows, so our sharing and our connection to others grows. In a time like this, when I'm filming this for you in a pandemic, oh, yeah, that's what we need. That's exactly what we need, is we need a growth day. And then I started telling my friends about these ideas and it just, it grew. What people realized was like, oh, yeah. So I've got friends who are coming on with us. I have a January 1st broadcast. I don't know when you're listening to this, but on New Year's Day, 2021, January 1st, from 10:00am to 2:00pm Pacific Standard Time, will be live with some of the best personal development coaches, motivators and inspirations in the world. And we're just going to teach people how to let go of 2020 and renew themselves for 2021. Renew their mindset, renew their spirit, renew their joy. You can register, by the way, at Growth Day. And matter of fact, if you are in my community and you've been, you know, under any of my other brands before hpx or brendan.com or lots of other things, you're going to see a migration of lots of things over to Growth Day because I'm really going to finally make 2021 the year that we bring everything together under one brand, where I also am able to celebrate other voices and build a greater community and bring in other voices into our content. And I've wanted to do that for years. And I finally figured 2021, it's my 20th year. I had 20 years of serving my audience by myself. My books, I want to bring other books to you. I had 20 years of doing coaching, just me. 20 years of being on the stage by myself, just me. 20 years of leadership consulting or change management consulting, 20 years of going live or look at my. Youtub all these things, just me right through a lot of these times, from when YouTube was growing up to podcasts growing up there, it was, but it was just me and Growth Day, I want to bring in, I want to keep doing what I'm doing, but I also want to bring in more voices. So if you're in our coaching community, you'll see it go from HPX coaching to Growth Day coaching. You'll see a lot of rebrands going on, but also I'll give you a roadmap of what 2021 is going to bring. We're going to start the year with introducing the world to the world's best personal development coaches, where you can be with us every single month and we're going to coach you. So people like myself and motivators and teachers and trainers. Mel Robbins, David Bach on your personal finances. Jamie Kern Lima, who's built it cosmetics to a billion dollar brand. She's going to be there for you throughout the month. We've got Prince Ea throughout the month. We've got Dave Hollis, we've got, oh, my gosh, so many names. I'm even forgetting right now because it's just, it's been a deluge of my friends jumping in saying, oh, yeah, I want to be part of this, I want to do this. Anthony Trucks, Gloria Tonmo. It's just, it's a stunning level of support that we're going to give you throughout the month. Now, the truth is, this is kind of. I've been trying to describe Growth Day. It's been hard because there's so much I can't tell you that we're rolling out in 2021, but I can tell you a few things. One, we're going to start with giving you the best coaches and the ability to be with us live throughout the month. I kind of think about, like, if Masterclass had all their teachers and trainers going live throughout the month, people would engage more. And in the personal development world, I've got the best community of coaches and teachers and trainers to give you masterclasses in personal development, personal transformation every single month. So I'm really excited about that. That's me. Growth Day again. You can go to growthday.com to learn more about that. But basically we really work to make it so it's less than a buck a day on average. You get access to the world's best coaching you, training you. We're going to build community around it in a new way with a whole new platform. We're rolling out a new Software, a new app. We'll be rolling out new podcasts, new morning shows, a whole lot of new content around the Growth Day brand. And here's the deal. I'm going to do it different. I'm going to take you on the journey with us as we build it. Everything I have done for my entire career, we built it, we polished it, it was ready, it was perfect. And we launched it and we launched it and it was ready and it became this big thing and this one going to do it in motion with you the first time ever. So on my podcast, the Brendon show on what will be the Growth Day morning show, which will be on my Instagram, Brendon Burchard, I'm going to take you on the journey. I'm going to talk to you about building a global brand, building a community, transitioning from one thing that you've been doing in your life to a new thing that's more right for you, telling you and also listening to you about what is going to be the things that you need to make not just 2021, but the rest of your life more extraordinary. So this is the idea and the intention behind Growth Day to give you the tools, the coaching and the community that you need to experience more profound levels of personal growth. And what do I mean by that? Well, I have this specific belief that lots of people do have intention, they do have motivation, they do have good habits. And guess what? They achieve a lot of things. And still, even if they sense life satisfaction, it doesn't feel right to them. And they can't explain it. They can't figure it out. They're doing the right habits, they're having the right green morning smoothie shake. They're doing all the things and they can't figure out what's missing. Well, here's what's missing. I really believe three things are missing for people. And when they understand these three things are the things they're really after, then everything changes. Like, what are we really after? What are we after with Growth Day? What do we want to deliver to you? What? Well, I really believe these three things really matter. Obviously, in personal development, we're always gonna give you guidance, we're always gonna give you coaching, we're gonna give you community, all of that. But what specifically do you, if you had a day for personal growth, what should you be thinking about? What should you be measuring, what you should be working on? Well, I'm gonna give you all the tools of that in our new app, which will be coming out in spring But I also just wanted to get you philosophically tuned up right now for better 2021 and help you understand if 2020 felt like dread, where it was coming from. And use this opportunity, not just tell you about what I'm doing with Growth Day, but give you the opportunity to learn something. I know I said I wasn't going to teach a framework, but it's still me. I can't help it. I got to do it. I got to give you it. So here, think about this. Think of like a triangle, okay? And this is after everyone's achieved whatever they want, this is what they want more of. And after everybody has tried all the habits and tactics and tricks to improve or biohack their life, they still, if they're missing these three things, it doesn't feel right, even if they have external success and rewards. So the first thing that people want more of, especially this year and this time of year, is aliveness. We all want a greater sense of aliveness, that is mental, physical, spiritual energy. A sense under aliveness you can put those categories of joy, of adventure, of beauty, of awe, of exhilaration, of motivation, of enthusiasm. We want a sense of aliveness during the day. And you know that because you've had days where you feel like you're dead, especially during a pandemic, when you're locked down during quarantine. But we want a greater sense of liveness. Think about every area of your life. When the aliveness is gone, there it starts feeling like dread. When the aliveness is gone, right? Even think about your relationships. When the aliveness isn't there, when the intimacy, the pop, the zest, the vibe, the connection isn't there, there's trouble. We want aliveness in our work, we want aliveness in our relationships. We want aliveness in our sense of well being. The things that draw our interests and our passion, those things that make us feel alive, not just from jumping out of a plane, skydiving, but. But the aliveness that comes with being excited for your day, those things matter. The aliveness that comes with good health, good well being, the. The. The focus of wellness, so that can wake up with energy, so that we take care of our body, so our mitochondria are firing, that we have a sense of longevity. And not just that we live long, but the quality of that life is full. A vibrancy, right? You can use a lot of different words for aliveness. I've typically taught about vibrancy, but which is a sense of aliveness. But under aliveness, we can put all those things when you're with your child and they do something cute, there's just that moment where it feels like Aleph. There's this, there's this, there's this space in that moment in which it just felt more like the color turned up. You know, we want more of those moments, more senses of aliveness throughout the day. And we're going to talk a lot about that as a theme in growth day. Even as we give you the direction or the drive or the guidance or the tools or the community. The other thing that people want, if you think about the triangle at the top, is the liveness, this other corner of the triangle, think of it as connection. Connection. People want greater connection because one of our primary aspirations in life is the quality of connection of our relationships. And I think of connection as a broad term. I think of like we want connection to our day, to our purpose, to ourselves, a sense of connection to us, like that congruence, connection. But we also want deep, meaningful relationships with other people. Connection, right. And lots of us lost that this year in the pandemic where we didn't get to see each other, hug each other, be around each other, travel, adventure, the ways that we might have normally. And so I really believe that that sense of connection, people really felt that this year when it's gone, it doesn't feel good. It really doesn't. The third part of that triangle is meaningful pursuits. Meaningful pursuits. And see, this is a really important one for people. And I don't say the word purpose here because purpose can change throughout our lives. And I don't use the word here of like necessarily meaning or fulfillment though we want to feel that. I use the word meaningful pursuits on purpose because you know what? I know people who have dead end jobs and they are so alive and so connected and they've got this hobby on the side that they feel is so meaningful and it's so fun and they're pursuing that and their fulfillment is coming from that. And they don't mind punching the clock over here at 9 to 5. They really don't. And some people say that's terrible. It's like, no, the job's fine, but you know, this meaningful. You can have a meaningful pursuit on the side. I know many of you have side hustles and you love it and you don't need to do it 24 7. So I don't call it meaningful work because people always think about work as just 9 to 5 because we want meaningful pursuits. Even people who have great purposeful jobs, if they have a great purposeful job. But within that job, there's not a meaningful pursuit thereafter. There's not some initiative or some goal that they're going after that engages and they find that, you know, like connection, joy, fulfillment in, right? No aliveness, no connection in that pursuit of something, right? It's in the pursuit of things that matter to us that we do come alive, that we do feel more connected with source, spirit, sense of self, congruence. And so it's always about, like, what is that next meaningful pursuit for you? Because it will change, right? Because there's a part in people's lives where, okay, well, the meaningful pursuit was. Maybe it was sports in high school. And then the meaningful pursuit is being a great parent. Or the meaningful pursuit is the new job, or the meaningful pursuit is that new software company you're building on the side, right? It's like that zest that we get from doing something that brings us meaning, but it doesn't have to be our total experience, you know? And knowing how to have meaningful pursuits every day is what makes us feel like we're having growth days. It's where we get that progress, that momentum, that sense of fulfillment and joy. Meaningful pursuits. So think about when we have aliveness and connection and meaningful pursuits. I mean, everything else cannot be great, but if we can learn to turn those things on, we feel great and we start moving ahead and we have more opportunities for growth and fulfillment. Because when we have all these things firing in our lives, when we have a sense of aliveness, authenticity, awe, inspiration, enthusiasm, joy, beauty, that sense of vibrancy, of aliveness, of life, and we have to bring that, we have to summon that every day. Every day is a growth day, right? We gotta summon that. You can have all the reasons in the world you have great, meaningful pursuits. You can have the bank account full, the kids are healthy, the cat likes you, and great relationships with people. But if you don't summon the sense of happiness, presence, mindfulness, intention, something to connect you with aliveness, reverence for life, then you're doing it wrong, babe. What about connection? Well, connection. When we have that deep relationship with other people, then everything significantly shifts. Everything significantly changes. Like, the day can go bad, but you come home to somebody that you love, and all of a sudden, just like, ah, great. In that love, we find release. In that love, we find our joy in that connection to others and to self, we find greater fulfillment and satisfaction in our lives and meaningful pursuits. Going after it, chasing the thing, building the dream, doing the hobby, playing with the interests. And the passions getting better and developing mastery because it's towards something you care about and it means something to you. These are the things that you will hear as themes throughout growth day. Aliveness, connection, meaningful pursuits. Our coaches, the world's best. And we're going to be coming together every single month for you several times throughout the month and build a community and a membership platform around it. And if you want information about that again, just go to growthday.com and just be along with the journey with me this year. 2021 is going to be a little bit of a year for me, I really believe, of a hot mess journey and I want to take you on it. I want you to see me growing every day as we're rolling out something new, as we build a new community, build a new brand, build a new software, build a new, you know, world class level of coaching and tools. It's going to be fun. It's going to be really fun. That's my meaningful pursuit of the year is this rebrand, if you will, where I don't know if rebrand is really the right word. It's more of bringing together all the great tools, services, programs, philosophies, curriculums I've always had. But bringing together in a curriculum, opening up the voices in that curriculum, bringing in that community element that I feel like we haven't nailed and done the best that we could with over the years and finally bringing the software out that will support you on your journey to grow every day. All of that will be rolling out throughout the year, from the morning show, to new podcasts, to new books, to new voices, to new communities. Be along with me on the ride. Please make sure that you are a member of this. If you want to be part of this journey, go to growthday.com and get yourself signed up for our New Year's broadcast live. It's free for the world. And then afterwards, join our community and be part of this, where you're getting world class expertise and guidance throughout the month. 2021's got to be the year you dedicate yourself to another level of time and investment in your personal development. Because you deserve to be happier in 2020. You deserve to feel more alive, more connected and continue pursuing those meaningful things. Even when the world can shut down on you, you don't shut down. And I really believe that if we all engage 2021 with an understanding of these things that we really want. Aliveness, connection, meaningful pursuits. And if we do it together, and if we choose each day to grow each day to get better each day, to build community each day, to push ourselves to highest levels, each day to remind ourselves of our intention, our motivation and practicing our habits. If we just do more of that, life gets better. Visit us@growthday.com to be along with the journey. I want to end this with just a moment of gratitude.
