SushiRitas: Chipotle Style Sushi with a Unique Bar Experience

Jay Rayford built Social Sushi as a Detroit pop-up before launching Sushi Ritas, a Chipotle-style sushi concept where you build your own roll. The new spot has a bar serving craft cocktails, alcohol-infused frozen drinks, and an exclusive sushi menu, with plans to expand across metro Detroit using a rice-laying robot.

Thank you for your time. I'd like to provide you with a glimpse into what we were able to accomplish with social Sushi as it builds the foundation for what's next. In 2012, I embarked on a culinary journey with social sushi, an innovative networking event in Detroit where sushi served as a unifying medium across diverse cultural and professional landscapes. Social sushi grew from a mere social gathering to a cherished pop up and catering business. Hosting special events and sushi classes. From intimate home gatherings to professional corporate events buildings. Over five years, our unique blend of sushi and community engagement created unforgettable experiences centered around high quality fresh sushi. Building on the success and spirit of social sushi, I'm excited to introduce my latest endeavor, Sushi Ritas. Inspired by the streamlined efficiency and niche appeal of fast cash brands like Chipotle Sushi Rita's is poised to transform the fast casual sushi market. It's more than just a restaurant. It's where fast casual dining meets and imaginative culinary art. The distinctive bar area at Sushi Rita will feature an exclusive sushi menu coupled with original craft cocktails and a unique take home alcohol infused frozen drinks that we call Ritas. Sushi Rita's is an extension of the legacy of social sushi, offering a fresh scalable concept tailored to a variety of customer needs including dine in, carry out delivery and catering. Utilizing technology like our rice laying robot will be strategically positioned for expansion into high volume locations and prepackaged opportunities. My ambition for Sushi Rita's transcends the traditional dining experience. I envision this unique fast casual concept dominating the market across metro Detroit and beyond. Bringing people together as social Sushi did, but on a much larger scale. Join us on this epic journey. The foundation has already been laid and customers are waiting. Let's build a remarkable future together.
What do you think of the place?
I think it is like a little hidden treasure. When I first came here, it's probably back in March. Everyone was here, the people who have created social sushi and they really went out of their way to make it a very personable experience. The sushi is also really good.
Okay. Are you a big sushi fan?
Yes. Oh my God.
And how does it rate?
I would definitely have to say it's one of the best sushi places I've ever been to.
Really?
It's really, really.
So what they're doing is working?
Yes, it is. It is. I hate to interrupt your interview. Well, I have sushi. This is the one up dough and our social sushi sauce and Chopsticks are over. Well, you got.
Do you live in the area, do you walk here? Or is it a destination you actually come to?
I come here. It's not that much of a drive, but like whenever I do plan to come here, I know it's not going to take that long. It's always exciting.
The vibe at the Pop up was extremely positive with lots of folks hanging out, listening to good music and enjoying the sushi. And the customers I had spoken with were coming back every week because they knew that Jay and his crew would be set up selling some of the finest food in town. I love seeing the community come together to support a vision. Maybe I have a bit of a soft spot for Detroit, but Jay and his team are really onto something here and to me, they're doing this the right way at the right pace.
Pace.
Lots of people choose to jump in head first, go into huge debt by opening a brick and mortar. But deciding to prove the concept first is a great way to get people to believe that you're serious. This is no longer just a good idea. Social Sushi has a great product and people want it. At this point, Jay has a much better chance when he does open his own place since there's already a built in demand and a growing number of fans who have come to rely on him being there every week. There's definitely a lot to learn from this story and if you really believe in something, then prove it by doing whatever it takes to make it happen.
Sam.
