In this solo video, CPA Bill Hanna advises early‑career accountants on how AI will reshape the profession. He explains that AI will soon automate routine data‑entry and basic bookkeeping, freeing accountants to focus on understanding business context, collaborating with controllers, and developing advisory and leadership capabilities that AI cannot yet replicate. Hanna stresses that this shift mirrors broader AI disruption across fields such as medicine, engineering, and law, and warns that without evolving toward higher‑value, context‑driven work, many traditional accounting roles may shrink. He outlines a 5‑ to 10‑year horizon during which human accountants must cultivate the ability to translate financial data into strategic narratives for boards, investors, and owners, positioning themselves as indispensable business advisors.

So the game plan for you as a new beginner accountant is to focus on splitting maybe your job into data entry, but also the other half of your job is understanding the business, how everything we do today impacts the business and drives the business forward so that you can become an advisor. A lot of you are at the very beginning of their accounting or finance career, and they're asking me if it's worth it to get into accounting and finance. Now that AI is beginning to take over? The answer is this is going to be a wave of taking over in many careers, not just accounting and finance. So think of medicine, engineering, and many other— legal. All of these careers are going to be impacted by AI, reducing the amount of people needed to do the job. So this is going to be the case everywhere unless you're willing to maybe take a blue-collar job like plumbing or other things, which is great. But not all of us are going to be doing these manual blue-collar jobs. So in this case, if you're going to be getting into accounting and finance, you need to be thinking of how you're going to evolve your career to create value. AI is going to be doing all of the data entry and basic bookkeeping. And that means if you are a beginner accountant, you need to be working with the controller or whoever you're reporting to, to understand more the impact on the business, how the basic stuff that we do in accounting is impacting the business overall. So that you can grow into an advisory role, a leadership role. These are the things that AI cannot do still yet, right? AI can provide some basic interpretation of the data, but only a human as of now and in the next maybe 5 to 10 years can sit there and understand the context of the business, the history, relay in a human way to other stakeholders like board members, investors, and owners the story of the business and where it needs to go.
