Short instructional piece advising how to grow a commercial service department by deliberately targeting clients and work that match the team's technical capabilities—focus on a narrow client/work profile to deliver higher-quality service and avoid mismatches that risk failure.
The second piece of building the right type of commercial service department is seeking out the right type of clients and types of work so that you can focus in on it like a laser and really provide a great service. So for example, if I had technicians that can handle 20 ton and under equipment, and I have maybe one technician that could work on larger equipment or more industrial equipment or chillers and things like that, seeking out that type of work wouldn't be a good fit because it set ourselves up potentially for failure. So build those clients, look at the type of clients you want to bring on board. Then seek out, actively seek out those type of commercial service customers that match the skill set of your team.
