HVAC techs need year-round training and hands-on practice to switch between AC and heating work without mistakes. Plan at least a month before busy season starts, since it takes weeks for technicians to adapt to seasonal process changes like checking coils versus heat exchangers.
We train all year long. Even when it's 100 degrees in the summer, we're still doing training. And some of that training is to make sure that the techs are being thorough and they're not rushing through things. The other thing that's really important about that training preseason, and that's why you need a plan, is we find it takes the technicians a couple of weeks to really get their head around the transition from AC to heating season, and vice versa. You know, from checking the coil and checking the heat exchanger. So those are different processes, and it takes them a while to wrap their head around it. And at the beginning of the season, you have opportunities. But if your techs are not going to be thorough and run the process, then you're going to blow those opportunities early in the season. So the bottom line is, make sure you're thoughtful, make sure you're ahead of the curve, and make sure you're actually putting in the work before the season starts. And it's going to be weeks before the season starts. If you are planning any less than one month ahead, you're behind the curve.
