All right, We've talked about inspiring people about getting them to commit and act right. Inspiring, engaging. We've talked about planning. Now we want to talk about keeping people in the game. See, even after all that, people have setbacks, they get discouraged, they want out, they think it's not for them. Coaching is the last of the four skills disciplines of the leadership flywheel. And coaching is about people keeping them back in the game. Coaching is where we remind them of the inspiration and what the opportunity is for them and what action they're taking. And we replan things and then we get back in action again. So that is the leadership flywheel. So let's talk about coaching. See, coaching is really rooted in powerful. Coaching is rooted in powerful listening. If we're listening and curious and using questions not in a manipulative way, but to really seek to know and understand what's going on for the person we're coaching, then they will have insights out of our coaching them. And it's interesting to me how we are around different people. I was coaching a guy, Sam, some years ago, and he was worried about this team, a woman on his team. But Sam didn't realize how rigid and constrained he was around her. He wasn't free. And so he was always trying to get her to do things or see things because he was kind of sure of what it was. After working on his coaching skills and doing some exercises around learning better coaching and having Sam read the book the Coaching Habit, Sam began to adjust his coaching. And so instead of coming in certain of all the answers that he had and what she should do and shouldn't do, he just started being more curious. Tell me more about that and why do you do that that way and how come you stop there and what's going on with that? And as he got curious and set aside what he thought he already knew. Not only did he understand her a little bit deeper, but she saw herself in new light. She examined things that were unconscious and reflexive or reactive, that she hadn't really thought about why she does things this way. And she actually started to change just on her own by having insights about herself because he got more curious and asked more questions instead of being fixed and certain of how it needed to go with her. The best place to start being a great coach is to stop having so much to say, stop being so sure of what's going to work for the person and bring more curiosity on, more listening, and shut the hell up. I know that when I remember to do that, and I don't always because I'm a human being just like you. I am a far better coach when I do that, so I hope that's been helpful for you.
