Bill Gallagher walks through how to find your company's purpose using Simon Sinek's emotional 'why' framework. He shares a practical exercise to distill it into 2-6 words, then shows real examples like 'Elevating America' and 'We keep the world working' that companies actually use.

I want to talk to you a little bit about purpose. The purpose of the company is the why or the what. This is from Simon Sinek's work, from others, getting the most out of people. It's the idea that there's an emotional center, something you care deeply about that is motivating it. Motivation. The emotional center is where decision and action arise in the brain. So Simon Sinek likes to say it's the why of the work. Verne says it's what you care about. You might call that semantics. Choose whichever one works for you. But we're looking for something that you feel strongly about. What are you proud of? And that'll be the place where you get the motivation, the why of the work. So my why is helping leaders build a better world. I love helping leaders. I'm proudest that that work that I do is impacting the world in a positive way. And here's how you get at it. You think about somebody that really matters to you, like a child, adult or young, but somebody you care, you're very fond of and want to model things for or think about, like a parent or a grandparent that is very special to you. So I can think of my grandm. She's passed. Long passed now. But Granny Sally was the woman who mattered most to me as a young kid and actually stronger in many ways.
Than my mom, who's still alive.
She knows I love her. But if I was going to tell Granny Sally what I did for a living and I said I help leaders build a better world with my work, that's what I would say to her. That is the kind of thing to do. So think about the work that you do and what you're proudest of and how you tell somebody that was really very, very special to you what you do, and you'll start to get at it. Now, here's the thing that trips people up. Many people get into this place of like, they've got to get it right. That's not at all important. It's something that you make up, that motivates you and hopefully the people around you. But you don't have to get it right. Get a good enough draft, like so many things, worrying about getting it right, perfectionism gets in the way of actually having something useful and helping you. So what's the best, most useful way you have to say it today? Go with that. And then if it changes over time, fine, let it change. Say it differently in the future. But for now, what is it that you would say that you care about? The purpose, the driving thing that has some emotional center for you and get it down to a few words. So mine is a little bit long. I could distill it down to helping leaders. That would be two words. Helping leaders build a better world is four more words. That's six words, right? That's what I do. So we could have somewhere between two and six words in there, but it's definitely not beyond that. It's not a whole paragraph of something. That's your purpose. It's the reason, the thing that you care most about. So we want to get a draft of that, and then we want to have it start to resonate with a lot of people so you can keep up leveling the way that you say it, and you may even find that you say it differently at some point in the future. But what do you really care about? One of my clients came up up with. And they were, they. They did cranes and hoists and that kind of thing. And they came up with elevating America. And so they were all about lifting the things that build and. And make America great. And they were particularly focused in the United States. That worked for them. Another of our clients was in the staffing business, and they came up with we keep the world working. And they love the phrasing of that. You just want to play with a little bit until you get to something that you have and then go with your draft and start using it to find your motivation. Hope that's been helpful. We'll talk to you again soon.
