Do you ever wish leadership was more natural? Like leadership in general was just a natural, easy thing that you did? Maybe you're already a decent leader and you know it, but it's not always natural. It takes work and effort. I want to share with you four secrets to natural, effortless leadership. Four simple skills that when you do them again and again in that order, make a profound difference, make your life easier as a leader, allow you to do anything. The truth is all of us are good at one or two and then we fake it or avoid the other couple. And the thing is that you actually have to get good at. You have to work at all four of them in some way. Well, you might naturally be good at some of them. You might automatically gravitate to some of them. You avoid some others. So I'm going to talk to you about inspiring people, producing a positive emotional state, getting people excited about something, engaging them, getting them to commit and act, planning, coordinating the team, getting people to work together and then finally coaching people to keep them in the game and leveling up. Those are the four big secrets. Now here's the thing. By example, right? What do I do? I'm pretty good at inspiring, like casting, creating a big vision, saying it well, I'm a verbal person, I'm persuasive, I'm excited so I can get others to be excited. I do that one pretty naturally. I'm also kind of a planner, schemer, strategist, so I will do a certain kind of planning pretty well, especially on the positive outcome oriented side. And I can be a pretty good salesperson, that is I can get people to say yes, except I use a lot of left to my own devices, I will be dominant, commanding or manipulative, right? To be honest. So I'm best with the inspiring part of it, casting a big vision. I'm second best with the planning side of things, creating a pathway, thinking about how I would get there. And then I'm third best and kind of weak or marginal in the act of getting people to say yes. And I tend to use too much force. And then finally, finally, coaching was something that for many years I was just absent at. I had no idea what to do about. I had no skills, no understanding of it. I did it very inconsistently and accidentally. And today I make my living for more than 10 years, 20 years in total, but 10 years full time as a coach for senior leaders. So obviously I got good at it at some point because I make a pretty good living at it. I impact thousands of people every year. So what is it? What are those things and why? In that order? Well, the first thing is like getting people excited about something, having people be in a positive emotional state. If you're not excited, enthusiastic, hopeful, in some positive emotional state, then everything else that comes after it is kind of difficult, kind of hard. But once I am excited, then I need to know what to do, what does it mean for me? And that's where the engaging comes in. So I get great at exciting people and then I help them find their unique personal opportunity to work something, to engage it for their personal benefit and fulfillment, applying their skills to it. So I get them to commit and act right? That's the engaging bit. Commitment and action. And that could be investors, that could be employees taking a job, taking an assignment, that could be partners, that could be customers even who will commit to buy something, give you their money, use the product or service in their life. All of those areas, right, are the world of engaging and then planning. Coordination is not just thinking about what could go wrong, but also like what could go well, but also how it could go wrong and getting all that. So we got excited people who are taking action, they're working together well, thoughtfully and we want to get on a regular cadence of that. And then finally coaching. What's coaching about? Coaching is about people keeping people in the game and in the game leveling up. So a person, a leader who coaches, and I'm not talking about a full time coach, I'm talking about a leader performing coaching as part of their world of supporting their team. In some things, especially your direct reports. When you're on my team and I want to coach you, I want to coach you because you've plateaued or because you're stuck or because you're frustrated. Coaching keeps you in the game. Now the Best coaching involves great listening, reminding you of the inspiration, reminding you of why you said yes or helping you to reconnect with why you said yes and what you're up to and why it's you and then replanning. So coaching closes the loop on these four things that you got to do well. And I think if you reflect on it, yours may be different than mine, but you probably do a couple of them really well and consistently. But that's a little bit like being a great hammer and then pounding the heck out of every screw you find when you really want to find and develop your skills with a screwdriver, right? To not just be a hammer to everything because you won't just encounter nails in life, right? To use a metaphor. So you want to develop these four things and use them again and again, pretty much in that order on a regular basis. If you want to become a more natural, easy, effortless leader, leading larger and larger organizations up to bigger and bigger things over time. That's really the four secrets of natural leadership. Leaders ultimately pass the baton and leaders get time off. Leaders have a great life who practice these four things. Natural leaders step back, create great teams, create great companies.
