You've heard Jim Collins talk about a flywheel in business. Maybe you, maybe you've read about it, maybe you've heard it referenced by other people. He's really popularized the idea of flywheel in business. Well, we think there's a flywheel not just for the business, but for you as a leader. And over 18 years of working with leaders at all stages of growth, we found four key skills to develop or things to use in this flywheel. So the first one is, and Simon Sinek teaches us this, it's start with why. What is the deep, emotionally resonant thing that helps you grow the company? Start with why. So we start with purpose and vision and we develop our voice and we look learn to use vulnerability and boldness and visioning to inspire people, to make them feel, get excited about how the future could be. Right. The next thing though, that immediately follows that is what does that mean for me? What's the opportunity for me? So engage is the second thing that follows in this flywheel. Engage is decision and action. So engage we have excited, lit up people, but now they need to know what do I need to do? What's my role in all this? And when they see that, right, they commit and they start taking action. Action. That's the engage piece, the second part of our leadership flywheel. And the keys here are getting better at listening and understanding other people. Not your pitch so much as though your appreciation, your curiosity, like that kind of thing. And then getting out of the way, your personal concerns, your doubts, all of that kind of thing so that you can be over with the other person. So that's engaged. Right now we've got inspired, engaged people who are starting to take action. But now we need to bring planning, Planning to coordinate their efforts with everything else that we're doing and bring that in, align teams, and so on. So what's great planning at this point? Well, starting with the end in mind, thinking about what could go wrong, dealing with the setbacks. That's the whole world of planning that we're talking about. All right, so now we've got inspired people who start engaged, taking action, and they're doing it in a coordinated fashion with good planning practices on a regular cadence. Right? But unfortunately, not everything turns out, not everything goes well. And so that's where we get into the last piece of the flywheel. And of course, that's the piece that loops back on everything else. And that's great coaching. So when you're a great coach, you spend a lot more time listening and causing the other person to have insights and reminding them of what they inspired and what the opportunity was for them and why, what actions they were taking. And then we can plan again and figure out what's the next step. So coaching is the piece that loops and closes our flywheel out and brings people back into the games, keeps people in the game. So becoming a great coach is the last sort of critical skill in our leadership flywheel. So remember, if you are stuck, if you're stopped in some place, the thing to do is to go and think about, where are you at in the flywheel. So have you created the right inspiration? Are you connected with the vision and the inspiration for the business? Do people know why they're doing it right? Do they have their personal opportunity and have they committed and begun to take action? Is that action being done in a coordinated fashion with the overall thing with other, with the overall project initiative company, and is it working well with everyone else? That's where planning and the regular practice of planning comes in. And then finally, again, coaching keeps them in the game, helps them get unstuck, reminds them of the inspiration, loops back around on it. Please use the leadership flywheel anytime to think of how to elevate your leadership and ultimately become a leader who creates leaders of leaders. And that is the kind of leadership that scales forever. Hope that's been helpful. My name is Bill Gallagher, scaling coach and host of the Scaling up business podcast.
