Hi everybody, I'm Bill Gallagher and I want to talk to you about the power of being bold today. The power of being really, truly bold. I think this one seems pretty obvious, but I want you to consider that there's two ways to do double your business. One is really, really hard and one is actually pretty easy. And the difference is boldness. I've got some great examples of this as well to share with you. But consider this. If you want to double the business that you've been running for some time or a product or a division, or like double anything, right? It can be pretty hard work because all of our thinking in a situation like that is pretty incremental. We try to do a little bit more, a little bit more of this and that and everything when we try to improve and, and we do take some ground. But it takes a long time to double the business. A thing that I've learned with experience over many years now, both as a CEO and coaching CEOs and C suites, is that 10x thinking doubles your business a whole lot faster and easier. So if you start to think about how would I 10x this thing or 100x, how do I go global, how do I create a billion dollar business that changes all our thinking? When we think that way, we start to reimagine everything. And people also get much more excited, much more interested in what it is. They fantasize about, what it means for them and they also have some fear about it. Like, oh my God, I'm going to be overwhelmed, I'm going to be too busy, right? But mostly it's exciting kind of terror that happens when we get really bold. And I'd like you to think about that for a second, like what would that be? And are you really playing a big bold game? I've learned with time to only focus our private coaching work with people that have really big, bold ambition, even if they're not clear what it is yet. We go to work on creating a transformational something called a bhag, a big hairy, audacious goal. That's a Jim Collins term that many of you probably already know. But it's the idea of being something really out there, something like a breakthrough. Consider this. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin orbited the planet before any Americans did it. And it freaked people out in the United States. They're like, oh my God, first we had Sputnik and now we've got a Russian in orbit and we're falling behind. We're going to lose this race and we're going to. You know, it was like this terror. And so President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson and Werner von Braun and, you know, they all gathered around and they're like, well, you know, said very simply, we're way behind. And so trying to just catch up to what the Russians, the Soviets have already done is going to be very, very hard to do. But we could pick something that's like 10 years or more out, like a BHAG, and we could actually commit to that and we could go to work on engineering something that would leapfrog them and we'd have a decent chance of winning that game. And so first they got some funding and then President Kennedy stood before the country in his message and he said, we choose to go to the moon. I do a bad Kennedy imitation, but we choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. He said this as a kind of an extraordinarily difficult, like never before been done kind of thing. And people are lit up by that kind of thing. Another famous guy, this Daniel Burnham, who was a city planner and architect and who planned the Columbian Exposition and the rebuilding of the city of Chicago, made the master plan for the city and did many other remarkable master plans for other cities around the world, said, make no small plans, for they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not in themselves but be realized. Make big plans, aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble logical diagram, once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone be a living thing asserting itself in ever growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. This is a cool thing. Now, apologies for the like, extraordinary male centric language of the time that was certainly the case today. And too much still to this day. But think instead about human in that quote and think about our children and grandchildren and the kinds of things that we would do, that we would be remembered for. Do something awesome and extraordinary and commit yourself to something that you would love to do, that you would work on even if you were unsuccessful, that would inspire you. And that's the kind of thing that people love to be a part of anyway. I think there's real power in being bold, in taking on bold things and declaring them boldly. But there is also a balance between doing something completely ridiculous and absurd. So when you pick that you want to find that balance, it requires a breakthrough. It's never been done before by you or someone like you. It's worth doing, it's interesting to you, it's aligned to your purpose, the purpose of your business, your life purpose. That's the kind of thing we want to commit to. But if I don't represent a country or I don't have a rocket company or that kind of thing, I probably don't want to declare that we're going to be a multi planetary species. As Bill Gallagher as Elon Musk that doesn't sound so far fetched. So figure out what's that right balance of doing something extraordinary never been done before, right? But if Elon Musk says that, it's different than I myself saying that because there's a profound difference in our track record to this point. Now I could go to work on that. I could spend my life talking about that and be in that place as well as could anyone. But I haven't done that work. So figure out the balance between being extraordinary and awesome and being absurd and create something that lights you up that you'd give your life over to and or at least the next chapter of your life and is worth doing.
