The thing that I think makes the biggest difference in leading your leadership, your leadership style, where it comes from is the purpose or the why. The, the things that you care about, what you care about, why you do your work that I think matters the most. So there's the company purpose and then there's kind of your life purpose. So just to share a quick story, in late 2001, I had accomplished many of the things that I said that I wanted in life. My wife and I had three businesses. I was married to a beautiful woman, we had two kids, a nice house. And yet I was miserable and stuck. And the things that I had relied on my strengths, right? Being smart, being articulate, being able to strategize and evangelize and sell my way through things and figure something out that wasn't working anymore. And in fact, in that moment where I had everything that I said that I wanted in 2001, I was miserable and I felt like I was failing. I was stuck. I was angry at my wife because our businesses at the end of 2001 were failing and trying to be a dad and be a husband and that kind of thing was just really hard with the background of that we weren't getting along, my wife and I. So everything that I said that I wanted now left me feeling trapped. And those strengths weren't getting me out of it. I got a coach and my coach, you know, first had me acknowledge that I was stuck, that my life wasn't working, that all that I had said wasn't enough. And so that was really powerful just to get that. And then he asked me. We did a series of exercises. But the biggest thing was at the end of your life, who remembers you? Who do you care about? Who do you want to think of you? Well, at the end of your life, if you've been successful in navigating this life, how do you want to be remembered? Who matters to you, and what do you want them to say about you after your successful life has concluded? In that moment, I'm not feeling very successful, so. But as I thought out to it, I thought about my wife and kids and I thought about a few close friends, my extended family, and I realized that at that moment I just wanted them to say that I'd made a difference with my life, that I was a generous person, that I was one of the good guys. So if I wanted that at the end of my life, what did that have to do with the businesses that I'd started, the money that I'd made, the house that I had? Really nothing. And what did that have to do with being smart and articulate? Well, nothing if I wasn't applying it to being a generous contribution to people, to the world, to the communities around me. And the next thing I did was look out at the way that I ran my life, my business, that kind of thing. And I realized that being connected to people was really missing. So I was lit up by this notion of deeply felt in that moment. I. I just wanted to be someone that made a powerful difference and was thought of well in the end. So I then had to apply that to my business. My business now had to be about not making money and delivering value, but making a difference for the people working on things they really cared about, not just what they would pay for all the businesses. I went through a period of change and that kind of thing, but my whole way of leading shifted and. And it was way more about people. I started to work on becoming a good coach as a result of that insight. That shift and my whole life began to reorganize over the next 10 plus years. And now, of course, that's been a lot more years than that in getting to this point. So as we said at 22, right, we're like 20, 21 years, 22 years since that time. And really it's a profoundly different career, different life that I have today than I had that. So as a leader, if you really want to shift into what will give you fulfillment, we're going to use your strengths, we're going to use the things that you love, that you enjoy, but we want to bring in the things that are most fulfilling. And figuring out your life purpose and aligning your business purpose with your personal life purpose is truly powerful, then you can focus on what really matters to you in the long run of your life. And although what you say about purpose may change over time, the core idea is enduring hope that's helpful for you.
