Your Vivid Vision

Well, if you have a purpose, a why of your work and you have a bhag, a 10 year, big hairy, audacious goal, let's create a rich picture somewhere. Three to five years out. Pick an actual place, time. Three to five years out. So three, four, five. Pick the year. What does it look like then? What does your company, your job, your team, your customers, your product and service, what's the whole thing really, really look like? The way to get at this is give yourself some time to do this. Set aside a couple hours, a morning, whatever. Go somewhere without distraction. It could be your design studio. It could be a beautiful place, the beach, the mountains, a place with a nice view, a quiet place wherever you would do sort of your deep visioning kind of thinking. Calm down. Then settle in. Breathe. Close your eyes, meditate. If you're accustomed to doing that, get your breathing under control. Like settle into your body. And when you're really good and comfortable, when you're really kind of settled, take a couple minutes to do this. If I'm leading people through it, I might take five minutes to get them settled or even more really settle down. Now imagine it's three to five years out. Pick your time. Imagine it's the end of 2029 now and I'm sitting at this place and I'm thinking about my business. Now try to imagine the business that you'd really love to build. What do you really want to build by that time? Imagine that business that you've built it, that you've really created something you're proud of. You haven't achieved your bhag yet, but you're on your way. So then think about and imagine your day. What time do you get up? What does that look like, how do you go to work? What's work look like when you arrive at work? What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? Right? How does it feel as you arrive at work? What does the place look like? What do the people look like? Who are you interacting with? How do you spend your day? What's on the walls? What do the meetings look like? Think about all of that. Then start to think outside the company. The customer, suppliers, vendors, partners that you interact with. Right? Imagine all that. Imagine your Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Imagine the whole week and what it looks like. The morning, noon, afternoon. Imagine the rest of your life, how you go home from work, how you spend your time with your family when you go to bed. Create a rich pie picture in your mind. Walk through your typical week. Think about your weekend, think about your month, your quarter, your year. Think about all aspects of it. Then think about the press and the media. What do they have to say about you? Think about suppliers, think about your finances, Think about all aspects of the company five years or three years in the future and imagine all that really richly. Let yourself play in that. And then open your eyes and just write, write, write, write, write. Fill a whole few pages of notes with just everything that you can think of. Just dump all that stuff out and then start to go through the specifics. My revenues, my employee count, like all the details, but go through rigorously. We have a worksheet that we can share with you to ask some questions around the vivid vision. But first imagine it and then just like write as much as you can as loosely, without editing yourself. Just get it all down and then start to refine it into something. Then you can actually take that and polish it up. We work with conscious Copy, Jennifer Hoodie and her team, to really add some polish to it and some graphics and copywriting, that kind of thing. You can take it pretty far or you can just work on it yourself and you get it to a place that you're really proud of and then start to share it with your team. This is not a committee thing, though. Don't do this as a committee and then create some watered down, average thing. Create the vision as the owner, as the CEO, as the founder of the company, and then invite other people to see themselves in it to help you fulfill it. And unless you have a couple partners, be the creator of this thing and then invite other people to be a part of it and to add pieces to the fulfillment of it. It's a very, very powerful tool that you could use for recruiting, for retention for strategy work and so much more. Hope that's been helpful for you. Good luck.
