Barney Rubble Bromont Preparations - June ‘23

Trainer updates Barney Rubble's prep for Bromont, a two-star event in Montreal likely his last before moving to intermediate and three-star. Recent meter-20 jumps at Saugerties went well, and a session with Bettina Hoy focused on softening and the two-star test. Trainer expects Barney to place highly or win.

This is a video for the Barney Rubble Syndicate. Well everyone, I thought I'd put a little video together of Barney training as we prepare for this week's Bromont three day event. Barney's heading up to Montreal to contest the two star long up at Bromont three day event. This will be most likely Barney's final sort of run at this level. He's been competing really, really well. Obviously this year he's been going from strength to strength and Brymont will be a great finale to his two star competition career. After this it's time to move him up to the intermediate and three star. This is the jump score that we had on Monday with Peter Wild. Barney's getting better and better in the jumping. I mean he's always been a fantastic jumper. The hardest part with Barney is he's a bit wild and fresh and frantic before and after the jump. And I don't know if it's the hot weather or the galloping that we've had to put in into him before Bromont, but he's starting to get more and more settled. You'll see a little later. We took him to a jumping show up in upstate New York at Saugerties and he jumped really, really well in the meter 20. Barney's already done a two star long. We did it at try on last year. I think he was second. He did really, really well. Basically. I just love Bromont. It's always a beautiful conditions, great course and a good education. So there's no real need for, for Barney to do another two star long. Except for the fact that I just think it will be a great experience and sort of just consolidate him at this, this two star prelim level. We had Bettina Hoy at our farm last week and Barney got a couple of good sessions in with Bettina. Our biggest thing is we worked on the first day of just getting him round and soft and trying to get him to stretch his neck down a bit. And then on the second day we concentrated a little bit on the, the two star long test which Barney finds quite easy. We he's sort of training and practicing a lot of the, the three star movements. So I got Pete, I took a bunch of horses up to SOEs and I decided to give Peter some of the better jumpers and the more difficult horses. And Peter did a fantastic job on Barney. Usually we have like a warm up class of a meter 10 or meter 15, but we stuck him straight in at the meter 20. And I mean Peter obviously is a brilliant rider and rode him to perfection. And Barney jumped really well. We use these show jumping competitions more of a as a sort of training day. We're not really competing there to win the class, but just to give the horse exposure to big spooky rings with tricky jumps and usually jumping them a little bit bigger than what they'll have to compete at. So, you know, Barney's obviously a very, very good jumper and as you can see here, he's getting more and more relaxed between the jumps. Going back to Bromont this week, I really think Barney should be right in there in the top, top placings or he should win it. Just I think he's an experienced two star horse now and obviously he's got tons of quality so we'll be going for it. This is Peter in the the jump off round and we decided to just jump Barney slowly around the jump off round. I think going fast and flood out in the jump off wouldn't have helped my causes at Bromont. It would have probably lit him up and he'd make him a little bit too fresh and excited. Anyway, guys, Barney's in excellent condition. He's in great health. I think after Bromont we'll give him two or three weeks vacation just because he's been running hard. All seasoned. The middle of summer and the ground gets hard. I think Barney deserves a bit of a rest, but I think we're in with a good shot. And I'll keep you all posted of our progress up here in Canada.
