Commando 3 -AEC Cross Country - August ‘24

Boyd Martin rides Commando 3, an 11-year-old horse that placed second at Defender Kentucky, in the cross-country round of the $60,000 Adequan Advanced final at the American Eventing Championships. Martin is riding six horses in the competition and makes tactical choices like taking extra time in the water jump to manage the course.

To the finish for her 20 on the jump. We'll get you a score for her as well when we have it. And this is an important round. So we'll now direct our attention to Boyd Martin and Commando 3, my favorite horse.
I think there's a lot of people's favorite horses.
This is an amazing horse. This horse owned by Yankee Creek Ranch llc, also pretty amazing jockey in the tack there. He knows he leads the division, of course, also on Tetzer Leg. So this will be his fact finding mission out on the track. And of course he was absolutely brilliant at the Paris Olympics that he just got back from. Boyd's gonna waste no time. He's definitely a competitive guy who's gonna want every dollar he can irk out of our $60,000 Atticon pot of gold. He's also riding more horses than anybody else here at this aec. So six rounds of. Well, more than six rounds, but six horses he'll compete here this week.
I think he's done some show jumping already this morning.
He has. I saw him in the show jumping receiving some accolades and ribbons. So he will have definitely started his day early and be working on a lot of laundry for somebody to have to encounter. So nicely done there so far. And you see why so many people, including you love this horse so much, Ally, because, I mean, just oozes with talent. But look at the expression on this horse's face. His ears are almost touching. It's so focused on what's next. So keen to do the job and
you didn't even probably notice, but he had kind of an awkward distance coming into that last combination and it was almost un. You could miss it because Boyd never moved. The horse recovered. And for somebody else, that could have actually been a big deal.
Karen o' Neil continues to make her way around the track. So far, so clean for her. Well, Boyd makes quick work of that combination down the hill and he is definitely having his eyes on the prize here.
That horse almost trotted that corner.
Beautiful.
That was a beautiful shot at that table.
Look at that gallop. I want to ride that one again. This 11 year old, you know, a horse that so many have their eyes on, has had so many victories with Boyd and the Tack so far, even in their short career together. And it's been a winner at the four star long level. One at Morven last fall, one at the Fork prior to that. And it also came here, if you recall, in April to the Defender Kentucky three day event in the Cosequin Division. That four star short. And it was second behind Will Coleman. So a great finish there. Since that time, they've completed one advance together, and here they are trying to nail things down in this $60,000 adequan advanced final at the AEC. Yeah. Super. Through. Yeah. And Boyd was very patient to the V element.
I think that's kind of gonna be what we're seeing now. Right? Waiting for the five and then jumping a little bit right. To shorten the three stride line so they can get it out. Right. The ones that do three on the way out are definitely jumping it right to left.
I think his buddy Phil may have made it back to the barn and said, that one's a five. Three.
Here's the plan.
All right. Sounds good. Check, Check. Super. So down there at the bottom, that's Boyd Martin. He's had a very fast round on Commando 3, and this is going to be very important to see what he comes across and what his clock looks like. He's got just a few things left to navigate before he sees that lucky horseshoe at the finish. I think he was really smart there. He took an extra second in the water and kind of just really shaped that turn, and it worked out very nicely for him. So he's gonna try to fly as fast as possible. Just two to go for Boyd Martin in Commando 3 as Olivia makes her way now down the hill to these brush fences. So Boyd is clear in the jumping. What.
