In a post‑game press conference after the Mavericks’ loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, guard Brandon Williams fielded questions from several reporters. He described the game as unusually intense, attributing the heightened energy to the team’s flair and the competitive back‑and‑forth. When asked about the final possession, Williams explained that the Mavericks ran a play to try to answer Klay Thompson’s deep three‑point attempt, but fell short. He highlighted the need for more physicality and guard involvement on the boards, noting the team rebounded 20 more than the opponent. Williams discussed his increased three‑point shooting this season, saying it aligns with the Mavericks’ offensive strategy and his role as a point guard. The absence of PJ Washington due to injury was noted as a loss, especially after his dominant first‑half performance. He praised Najee Harris for doing the “little things” that help the team succeed. A significant portion of the conversation centered on Kyrie Irving’s off‑court mentorship, with Williams saying Irving provides guidance during practice and from the sidelines, though details remain private. Finally, Williams outlined takeaways from the homestand—film review, offensive rebounding, guard‑big collaboration, and better execution—as the team prepares for an upcoming road trip.

All right, guys, we got B.
Will up first.
Go ahead with questions for him.
Brandon, was that one of the more intense games you've played as a Maverick?
Yes.
What do you think— what about it made it so intense? Do you think that all of the flair in that game brought the best out of you guys?
Yeah, like you kind of said, just the flair kind of just made everything intense.
Can you talk about kind of the last possession, like the Klay Thompson shot, kind of just trying to get back in the game in the 4th quarter?
Say that again?
Can you talk about the Klay Thompson sequence where he took like a deep 3, just kind of what you all were looking for in that shot?
Yeah, I mean, we were down 3, ran the play, tried to execute it.
How do you guys get better on the board? Brandon, you guys rebounded by 20 tonight.
We just got to be more physical. A lot of it is on us guards just coming back in and helping the bigs.
Brandon, you made multiple 3-point shots this game. This is the first time you've done that this season. Were you kind of feeling it in the first quarter?
Yes.
You've been running point a little bit, obviously. Is there more of a maybe a push from Coach to get more 3-point shots within the whole offense?
Yeah, it's my job just to get in the paint, look for our shooters and just be a point guard ultimately.
Like recently though, has there been more of a push or is it like all season kind of deal?
All season.
Okay. I know you guys didn't have PJ like the last 5 minutes or so because he got hurt. What did you miss by not having him out there?
He brings a lot to our team. He was dominating the first half. Definitely felt it when he was out there.
Happy birthday, for one. I know it's not the result that you guys wanted tonight, but talk about what you guys have gotten from Najee lately.
Thank you. Najee is— he does everything for us. He does the little things for us, and we're going to continue to need him to do that.
When you saw the replay of the Santa Aldama flipping flags, what did you think about that play?
I didn't see it.
Coach Kidd mentioned that This season you continue to grow at like running the offense and involving teammates in addition to scoring. Just what are you maybe learning about that as you continue to grow on this team?
I've been a lot of things, seeing a lot of things in film, and ultimately just having Kyrie in my ear just helping me out, seeing what he sees on the sidelines.
That's one thing that Coach talked about the other day is he just talked about Kyrie's leadership towards the team that's been going on for a few years now. What has Kyrie meant to you? And even though he's not playing right now, what is he doing to help you in practice as well as games?
Doing a lot behind the scenes. I'm not going to go too much in detail what we do in practice, but he helps me a lot.
What are some things that this team can maybe like take from this homestand as you're about to start a road trip?
One more time?
Just what are some things that this team can take from this homestand before you go on the road?
A lot of things. We need to go back and watch film, do some more cleanup. But there's definitely a lot of stuff we can take care of, starting with offensive rebounding, us guards helping those bigs, like I said. And then just ultimately just executing down the stretch.
