In this commentary, the speaker highlights a shift on TikTok where newer creators like Alex Earle and 92‑year‑old Grandma Droniak are generating disproportionately high engagement compared to legacy star Charli D'Amelio. Although Alex has only about 3 % of Charli’s follower count, she captures roughly 25 % of the views and 37 % of the likes on comparable content. Grandma Droniak averages about 24,000 shares per video—nearly five times Charli’s share count. The speaker argues that TikTok’s For You algorithm (FYT) enables such discovery for smaller creators, but also creates a constant struggle for established creators to stay relevant, suggesting a broader trend where legacy creators see lower engagement and view rates than newer peers.

There's a new wave of TikTokers taking over, folks like Alex Earle and 92-year-old Grandma Droniak. But here's the catch: follower count doesn't matter when it comes to impact. Although Alex only has 3% the followers of Charli, she's getting 25% of the views and 37% the amount of likes. And let's not forget about Grandma Droniak, who's averaging 24,000 shares a video, almost 5 times as many as D'Amelio. This trend seems to be across the board, with legacy creators having far lower engagement and view rates compared to their smaller and newer peers. This is both the beauty and the challenge of TikTok's FYT. It gives emerging creators an opportunity to be discovered, but it's a constant battle to maintain relevance. So move over, Charlie.
