When I tell you this number one reason you're not going to be able to get to that Next level of success. Unless you deal with this, you're gonna go, got it. For me, I struggled a lot and I've had my breakthroughs. I'm known now as the world's most followed motivational and high performance trainer. But I struggled a lot to get here. I got just like you. Some days I wake up on Monday and I'd rather watch some TV and not go off and conquer the world. There's some days that, you know, I want to have a cheeseburger, you know, I know that's not good. There's, I mean, we all struggle with getting our life in line with our highest levels and knowledge of what success could be and is for us. I struggle just as much as you do. And on that path of struggling from, you know, building five multimillion dollar brands to coaching, you know, eight figure businesses, to building my own eight figure business with this idea of what is this number one mistake we make at the level of success where we want to go to another level. So in your life you've come, you started down here as a baby, you had no idea what you're doing with your life, maybe no idea where you're going. You kind of struggled through some things and then when you decided you want to become successful, which I hope you've decided for yourself and you really own that as an identity that you're going to become a successful person. So I hope you've made that decision for yourself. And I know that when you made that decision the first time, no matter what level of success you're at right now, what puts you on the path to success, the first time was straight up desire, right? Les Brown, you heard him say it his whole career, right? One of the great motivational speakers of all time, he says you got to be hungry, you know, you got to have desire, you got to have a hunger in you to get something done, to become somebody, to form a particular type of relationship or company or career, there had to be a high level desire. And the first time we move to success in our lives, especially through, you know, our adolescence and our first couple years in the business and the working world, that desire comes from a hunger straight up just to make some money, sometimes straight up just to stand out, straight up because we just want to express ourselves and do our art. But we made a real decision. We had a desire inside that said, this is important to me. I am absolutely going to get my life turned around. I am going to be a better person, I'm going to be a better dad, I'm Going to be an awesome executive. I'm going to run a great business or I'm just going to.
I'm going to make money because I.
Need to make next month's rent. I've been there too, if you don't know my story. I mean, there was a place where I came up and I worked for Corporate America for a while and I loved that work. But when I left to start my own business, I quickly went broke and I had desire. I mean, I was hungry to make it. Not just because of money, but also for me at the time, a little bit of ego. I didn't want to fail in front of everybody. I wanted to be able to do my own thing. And that was a level of desire too. Part of me wasn't just I want to make a difference, but part of me was, I don't want to fail. I had a high desire not to fail in the way I defined failure at that time. At that time, failure to me meant something very different to me. Now I expect failure. If I don't have failure in my life, I don't have a high enough level of ambition and desire. If I'm not failing, that means I'm not trying big enough bets. I'm not pushing and challenging myself. So our definitions of desire has changed. Is it true? Think about that desire you had to become a success or to make it, or to have a good relationship or a good spouse or for you to really bust through in your career. That first desire, do you remember that? I mean, think about it. If you started a business, if you're an entrepreneur, do you remember that? That first business you started, you just had so much hunger and drive, right? You know when someone has a lot. If you have a lot of motivation because you have a lot of ambition. If you've read the motivation manifesto, you know that there's a tie between how higher ambition is and how high we expect something to happen and how much motivation we feel. Well, simplified, that means desire. So what was that first desire for you? What was that drive that made you successful to the point where you are today? Right? And I want to challenge you too. Do you still have it? Is it still there? Do you still have a deep level of hunger and drive in your life? And if you don't, you might have just gotten detached from higher ambitions, ambitions that challenge you. And depending on where you're at right now, you may be susceptible to what I call the number one mistake in success. But again, I'm going to assume, just for conversation sake, that you're pretty successful now, you want to go to the next level of success. So what's it going to take? Well, obviously, if you want to go to that next level of success, you've got some desire to get there. Let's just be clear about what that desire is, because here's what a lot of successful people do. One of the mistakes, not the number one mistake, but one of the mistakes successful people do is after they become successful, they got more opportunities, they have more finances so they can make more decisions, or they've got a stable base in their life. Relationship, work, money, some kind of stable base. And they're like, okay, you know, what else could I do? And they make the critical mistake of now starting to desire lots of things. So now they get involved in lots of interests, lots of different ideas. They start spreading themselves too thin, saying yes to lots of different projects, lots of different investments, lots of different new ideas. And what ends up happening is they don't have the same level of success as the first time. Because the first time they had one desire, make it pay rent, right? They were focused. They had like one sort of organizing desire that pushed them. And what happens is successful people get more successful, they start taking on more interests. But those interests aren't true, deep, meaningful things. So now they're pursuing too much, too many things, too many interests that aren't real commitments. And because they're lacking real commitments, they spread themselves too thin. Or they take on so many interests and they feel obligation. Now it feels like their life is not fulfilling. My hope is you recognize yourself in something I'm sharing today. I don't know because I don't have the fortune of having you sit here with me. And I'm not doing high performance coaching with you. I'm teaching and training here. So I don't know your particular story, but I know the important question for the next part of your story. What is your real desire for the next level? Are you clear on that? Because if you lack clarity as a successful person on what you desire, the next stage or the next step to be, you'll start dabbling in lots of interests and end up either over committed and obligated or frankly bored and disconnected. Just depends on your style and what your personality is. But lots of people, they're successful, they take on lots of interests, but they're just not fulfilled by that. And so what is your desire for the next level of success? It brought you here. You better define it for the next level. The second thing you probably did to get to where you're at today, right? Your real success as a person today. The next thing you did is, you know what, you studied, right? Maybe you went to high school, to college, to community college. Maybe you got your graduate degree, you got your mba, or you went right into the work world. That and you just studied. You know, it was on the job training, you know, you really studied with the managers, you paid attention, you were absorbing and taking everything in like a sponge because you didn't know exactly what to do. So you studied people, you read books about what to do, you went to seminars and to workshops. You did things as much as you could to try and figure out what's that one distinction that's going to make me more successful at this? You networked, you went to networking programs, you talked to a lot of people. There was a lot of intense study, even if it was on the job. You built a software company. Great. Do you remember how many hours you crashed and burned, fueled by caffeine at night? Learning, coding. There was a significant sort of time period in your life where it was just defined by learning whether it was college on the job or. Or just try in that first couple years of work, you know what I'm talking about? It was a time of massive learning, massive learning. And I bet if you look back to that time period from where you're at now, from this high vantage point of success, I bet it's fond memories you have of that. You know, even if it was a struggle, even if it's brutal, you kind of look back and you're like, that was fun. I was really working. I was really learning back then. That's a good time. Well, to go to the next level, do you think you're going to have to re engage that mindset again? It's hard for people to do that, though, because as you got more successful, right? As you got more successful, what you also did is you got more fixed in your mindset about what worked and about your mindset about who you are, what you valued, what you're capable of, right? Your boundaries of belief. Often, sometimes for successful people, it's ironic that their boundaries start to narrow in a little bit because they're so smart, right? Clearly you're smart. You succeeded. So people are celebrating you all the time. And so it's easy for your ego to close in and say, this is who I am, and not be open to learning anymore. And so what happens is people who want to reach that next level of success, after they've reached it, what do they do instead of Studying and learning things. Here's what they tend to do. Delegate it, outsource it. That's not for me. I don't need to learn that. I'm a successful person. Let me hire somebody to handle that. And what ends up happening? They crash and burn at the next level because they never acquired the very things they needed to acquire. Learning to be able to succeed in that area. You succeeded in this area because you learned something about it the first time. To go to the next level, you need to learn. Now, is this basic? Of course it is. But, you know, I've sat down with people who I coach CEO level often. When I tell them, could you share with me what is your learning plan for the next nine months? They'll say, what do you mean? I say, I mean, what's your curriculum? What specific things are you learning over these next nine months that's going to help you take this business to the next level? And they'll look around to their team.
Or they'll look around.
They're like, you know, I don't know. I'm just, you know, I'm just strategically trying to operate and I'm just doing these things and I'm like, oh, well, then could you imagine that it would be a problem for you to hit the next level of success if you don't have a next level of learning that brought you here? Because when you were successful, we just think we can go out and implement anything, right? You're better on your feet, aren't you, when you're successful, you're just good, man. You don't have to prepare as much, do you? You don't have to learn as much, do you? You're just good. You succeeded. Be careful. That's the trap. That's the trap we get into, is we stop learning as much. If you study my other work in thought leadership or what we call the experts industry, I'm telling authors and speakers and coaches, online marketers, content producers, bloggers all the time. I'm like, look, an expert is always a student first. So if this sounds too basic to you, then let's do that accountability check. What's your learning map for the next nine months? Next 12 months. Makes sense, right?
