Best Of: Set Deadlines, Create Check-Ins
26 Feb 2019 · 10 min
Brendon Burchard explains how to turn visions into reality: put deadlines on your calendar, embed habits and projects into specific dates, and establish regular check-ins for accountability. Without a deadline, ambitions stay abstract. Nightly journaling, weekly reviews with friends, and social accountability create feedback loops that keep you moving.

You have to schedule that vision. You need to schedule it now. Whatever your next stage Is okay today, bust out your calendar and say, okay, step one. Activity one. Effort one. Initiative one. Here's what I'm going to be doing, and here's where I'm going to get done by if you don't have a deadline, no wonder you're stuck sometimes. I mean, you ever sit around when you were in school and you had a paper due and you just sat there and you thought, oh, well, you know, I feel stuck. I feel uninspired, not interested. So you up to buddies or, you know, you go do other things to avoid the reality of it all. But then that night, before the thing is due, you're not so stuck anymore. You're up all night writing. You're getting that thing done because it's real. There's a deadline for something. And if you don't have your ambitions scheduled, they never come into fruition. You must schedule it, put it on a calendar and say, what do I want to make happen? If it's not in the calendar, it's not going to happen. You're going to deal with everything else, everybody else. And you know this already, but I've shared this with so many people, and I always find this to be true. They say, brendan, there's not much on my calendar next month related to my ultimate vision. You know, I just need to get through the next six months, and then I'll start thinking about the next stage. For me, I'm like, no, no, no, let's think about the next stage. Whatever that stage is for you, no matter how dramatic or how small, let's think about that now and put some habits, some routines, some meetings in the calendar now, today, if you look at my calendar next month, it's completely related to what I want to be doing. A lot of people lack that. So they kind of just barrel into each month in a very reactive mode. You know, they're constantly thinking, like, what am I supposed to be doing today? Because they never scheduled something for themselves. They're saying, what's going to happen to me this month? Instead of saying, this is what I will make happen this month. And if you've seen me train on this topic before, often say, hey, at least know each month. Have a goal each month for your health, for what you're going to create or contribute, for positive daily habits and thoughts, like, set real habits each day, that I'm going to do these things each day to move me forward towards my vision. I can't tell you how important it is to have projects, habits, routines, meetings that are all tied to Deadlines. Without those deadlines, if it's not in the calendar, you won't march towards it and you know it. That's just the human body and human mind is so drawn to the comfortable life or so trapped in the caged life that busting through the charge life. Sometimes you just need to write it on a wall, on a calendar, put it in your phone, set up some reminders, get that tactical day by day, right? These are my three goals. I'm supposed to be doing this today, right? And then if we get all these other things in line, then it's easier to do that, right? If you got these three goals on that schedule that day, it's easier to stay and you got your distraction dealt with. Just stay more focused to achieve them. If you've got some ambition around you and energy in your body and you've cleaned the plate to be able to take on those new things, scheduling it will really be the amplifier. Next, you need to create some check ins. Some people would call this, create some accountability. I just say check ins. I need you to check in with how you're doing towards these things. You know, check in with yourself each and every night as you journal thinking about, how did my day go? What am I grateful for? What did I move towards? Check in each Sunday as you pray or as you sit down again with a journal, or type out your notes to yourself, or sit down with a friend and just say, here's how the week went. See a lot of people who feel stuck. They haven't really been socializing or evaluating their vision. They stop talking about it, they stop revisiting it. But you know, when you revisit something over and over and over again, it makes you want to deal with it, you know, especially in a social context, because you already know if you've been telling your friends about your dreams for years and years and years and years, but you haven't done anything. They're like, dude, do it. You know, and they're so fired up. You need to go watch. What is that? Shia LaBeouf? Is that how you say his name? LaBeouf? You need to go watch his just do it video. Just like, do it. Just get it done, you know? And that comes from having people around you who just don't let you off. It's really related to your network here. I mean, do you have a coach? Do you have someone who can support you along your journey? Family, a friend, the guy down at the coffee shop? You can just talk with somebody and tell them where you're at and how you're progressing. Without that accountability, that social check in and that personal reflective check in on the journaling, you're not going to stay on top of it. And that might be what's happening because if you had all these things in place but you're just never really doing it because you haven't set up an accountability. If you want to create consequences here, create consequences. Say, you know, I'm going to check in with myself every Sunday. If I didn't achieve the three main things of this week that I'm supposed to do, then I got to go do something I don't want to do. You know, I got to go, I got to cook a meal I don't want to cook. I got to donate to a political party I don't want to donate to. I'm going to go do that thing that I just hate doing for my friend or my family. You know, set up a negative consequence if you have to. But I would rather encourage you to set up celebrations with people, you know, great check ins where every Sunday you get together like how did you do this week? You know, I did pretty good. Here's what I did. And you share that with each other and that's going to come from again, your network, the peers, the people who you're around. Your success will come faster and easier and as it does, it will be less likely that you're going to get stuck again. Get on a roll, it's your time.
