Brendon Burchard explains how giving rather than taking shifts you from scarcity to service. He shares a story about handing out candy-taped business cards at an event and introduces the dream-difficulty coin: every aspiration has an equal challenge on its flip side.
How many of you know?
You need to learn not to be so reactive to the people around you. Because who owns your feelings and your emotions? You do. They don't. Can they influence it? Yes, if you let them. Indira Gandhi said that when someone approaches you with a gift, the beautiful thing is you can choose to accept it or not. Well, when they approach you with an emotion, you can choose to accept it or not. You can choose to integrate it or not. I had to learn the difference between those avoid or approach. This is probably the most important one. In your dreams, are you going to approach that dream? Because guess what? Comes to that dream.
On the other side of every dream.
Of that coin called dream, the opposite side of the coin called dream is difficulty. It's a two sided coin, right? You even heard Jamie talk about it. Her and Paolo is like, wow, parts were successful, parts were not right. Things seemed here, easy in one way, hard in the others. That dream, that difficulty. But here's the question.
Are you approaching or withdrawing?
You got challenges in front of your life. Some people haven't looked it in the eye in five or six years. They haven't approached the conversation, approached the dream. And what you have to do is know if that's what you're doing. And I'm not here to say there's an easy or right answer. I'm just here to say is one approach will serve you and one will not. Sometimes avoidance is a good thing, right? Some, some people. You ever heard that phrase, don't wrestle with a pig, you get dirty and beside, the pig likes it. You ever, you never heard that before? Yeah, like, so some people, I completely avoid the conversation with them. Cause it's not gonna be productive. Cause I know that's part of their identity, that's who they are. They're just not gonna get there with me in that circumstance. Take or give. Some people come to an event and they go up. I'm gonna go to that event, I'm gonna get all sorts of clients and I'm gonna just go there and I'm just gonna take all the clients. I'm just gonna go and take and get whatever I can get. And I did that at one of the first big events I went to with my little box of Kinko's cards. I just walked up to everybody and I was handing that out with candy, man. It was just like literally with candy. I taped candy to my card. This is how advanced I was. You see? You see? So I gave him a piece of candy with my card. And I was, I mean, I should just grab the box and throw it at the audience, you know? But I was so excited. And then on day two, the person hosting the event, one of their team came up to me and said, hey, I got your thing of candy here the other day.
I said, oh, great.
Did someone give it to you? He said, no, you gave it to me. I said, oh, I don't. Sorry. And they said, you know what we've noticed is if when you're at an event, if you just give and you just serve, everything lines up for you after that. And she left. And I was like, wow. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, that was game changing for me. And it wasn't because I was a bad person. I just didn't know. I didn't see it that way. I was so trying to build and do that. I didn't realize my perception was take because I had scarcity in my life. And if you grew up in scarcity, you'd better know is your frame about taking because you have scarcity and survival needs versus giving, because guess what? Survival needs feel good right now.
But.
Spiritual needs of service and giving feels good for eternity. So be aware of what you are doing and the way you are stylistically dealing with people because it's coming from a perception of do you need to take or can you serve?
