If you’re feeling behind in life, watch this

Brian Moncada shares a parable about a Mexican fisherman and a businessman to argue that chasing what others expect wastes your life. He talks about his own struggles, faith, and what he learned about redefining success on your own terms.
How long it took him to catch them? Not very long, answered the Mexican. If you feel like you keep comparing yourself to other people's journeys, to other people's successes, to what other people have, and you're grinding, working super hard, day and night, long hours, long nights, stressing yourself out, but deep down questioning whether what you're doing is actually truly something you want to be doing or. Or if it's because other people have told you it's what you should be doing, then this video is for you. I want to share a story with you that hit me like a ton of bricks over the past two weeks. It's called the Parable of the Mexican Fisherman, the Mexican Fisherman, and the Businessman. And it goes like this. A boat docked, and I'm reading from my phone, by the way, a boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. Not very long, answered the Mexican. But then why didn't you stay out longer and catch more? Asked the American. Or the businessman. The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family. The businessman asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings I go into the village and see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, sing a few songs. I have a full life. The businessman interrupted. I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you. You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With extra revenue. You can buy a bigger boat. And after that? The Mexican fisherman asked. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can bring. You can buy a second one and third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middleman, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, and even New York City. From there, you can direct your huge new enterprise. How long will that take? Asked the fisherman. 20, perhaps 25 years, replied the businessman. And after that, afterwards? Well, my friend, that's where it gets really interesting, answered the businessman, laughing. When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and making millions. Millions. Really? Said the fisherman. And after that? Asked the fisherman. After that, you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late Play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying life with your friends. So what's the message of that and how does it relate to you watching this video? Well, here's what I can tell you. I've made over $7 million online in the last four and a half years. I've worked with some of the biggest industry leaders in this space, all of which who have done multiple seven, even eight figures, some of which our companies even did nine figures. Last year we scaled our business at $2.4 million. And at our peak, we hit $350,000 a month with 50% profit margins, hired a team of about 16 people.
And.
What behind that maybe most people don't see is all I desperately wanted to do was to escape that. And I was always afraid of admitting this to you because for a long time I was trying to keep up. It always felt like I was just trying to keep up. And maybe it feels like that for you. For me, last year was. And the last few months have been a total mind fuck. And it's because I've been telling myself, I've been having other people tell me what they believe me to be, who I believe I am, and what other people's opinions have influenced me to believe I should be doing this, I should be doing that, I should be talking about this, I should be talking about that. Last year, a lot of things happened, and many of which, if you've been following my YouTube channel for a while, you know, but here's the main thing I want to share with you. One thing that I've learned recently is that it doesn't matter what other people believe you should be doing. It only matters what you believe you should be doing. What do you actually want to do? You see, I was suffering from scaling. You know, I wasn't enjoying it. It wasn't fun for me. In fact, it was always a dread to think about the problems, to wake up to the, the amount of issues we were, we were dealing with. And it's funny because, you know, you hear guys like Andy Elliott saying, you want big problems, you gotta ask for you. You want to have big problems, you want, you want more? It's like. And you just have these guys screaming at you and they're just like, you, you want this, you want this, you should have this. And it's like, yeah, maybe if that's what you want. And I remember very early on when I was, when I was like one year into my agency career, All I wanted to do was hit 100k a month. And before that I wanted to hit 100k a year. I wrote down every single day when I was doing door to door sales. I make $100,000 a year. I make $100,000 A YEAR. I make $100,000, a year. And then I did it. And then I said, okay, what's next? And then I was like, okay, I make $100,000 a month. And then I did that. And then, okay, what's Next? I make 250, 000amonth. And I remember I told that to one of my friends. I was like, I want to hit. I wanted $250,000 a month. And he was like, why? And I was like, why not? And he's like, dude, I've seen so many people like try to hit that. Like just keep raising the bar, like 250, then 500, then a million. And they don't even really know why they want to do it. Like they just, they just say it. And at the time I really couldn't understand it, but I was just like, dude, I just want to do it to see what it feels like to do it and say that I did it. And then maybe I might change my mind. And that was almost four years ago when I told them that. And then you hit 250k a month and then you're like $500,000 a month. And then you get so close to that. But then deep down, all I could help, All I couldn't. How do I explain it? I guess, I guess the best way to explain is just to share what happened. I mean, my wife and I ended up becoming pregnant and unfortunately she had a miscarriage. And there was a lot of things that were happening at our life in the time that were very eye opening to kind of realize like what actually mattered. One of the things that, that actually led us to was actually coming together closer as a couple and reading the Bible. You know, I posted a video about this, my morning routine, almost a couple months ago now. And I was reading the Bible every single morning. And we were looking for answers. It's funny, like when you are searching for happiness or searching for purpose, a lot of people go searching for God. And that was us, that was me. And you do this because you feel like you're missing something, you're missing something in your life, you're not fulfilled. And so we turned to the Bible and we started reading and we actually got a lot of value out of doing that. And it actually helped Tie a few issues that we were dealing with and helped us address those. And it brought us closer to each other, which was amazing. And it actually made us ask the question, what do we actually want to do with our life? Like, where do we actually want to be? Where do we want to go? And you know what was interesting was when we had that thought that we were going to become pregnant at that time, we started changing, we started making plans, we started having a bunch of plans for our life. What's our life going to look like? Where do we want to live? What do we want to do? And a lot of those plans didn't really, didn't really pan out, obviously, because we ended up experiencing the miscarriage. And then we said, okay, well it's not our time yet to start a family. What do we want to do? And then we ended up going to Europe. And we went to Europe for about a month and a half.
And.
I remember I, I went to a Patrick Bet David Volk conference before going to Europe. And I got, I got so fired up, right? Like, I'm definitely someone who can be influenced by other people and what they want and what they want to achieve. And you're around these high, high level entrepreneurs for so long that you start believing, believing that what they want is what you want too. Because that's what they say. And if they're so successful, then that's what you should want. And the problem with that is you listen to those people and you try to emulate what they've done or what they're doing, but it's not true to you. And that's what happened to me. I was in, I was in Europe trying to detach, trying to relax, trying to enjoy time with my wife on vacation and actually, you know, not focus, focus on work. But I was so addicted to the idea of working that if I didn't work, I was afraid. I was fearful I would lose control of my life, of my business, of my success, of where I was going. It was a, it was a fear. It was an act of fear. So I started working during vacation. Jennifer and I started working during vacation. So we were working in the evenings, vacationing in the morning, and it was just this weird thing. Now where am I going with this story and why should you care? Well, because if you're feeling lost, if you're feeling like you're behind, if you're feeling like you're comparing yourself to other people's journeys, the reality is it doesn't matter what everyone else is doing. It matters what you should be doing. You're probably not used to seeing me if you're subscribed to my channel in this kind of setting, with this kind of crazy hair and wearing a hoodie and just talking to a camera like this. You're probably used to seeing me in a very specific type of setting. And that's because everything I've done was tailored to a very specific type of image. And the problem with that is you got to keep up with that. And a lot of people keep keeping up with it and they're never actually vulnerable, authentic to themselves, to their audience about what they're actually going through. And for me, last year and these past few months have been a total nightmare. Because what I realized was I. I was so afraid of admitting to myself that what I've told myself I wanted what other people have told me I should want, these million dollar months is maybe not actually what I really want. And that parable, that Mexican fisherman in the businessman parable really spoke to me. Like it might be speaking to you right now because you might realize that you already have what you actually want. But the problem is you're not satisfied, you're not fulfilled, you're not aware of what you actually have right in front of you. And so you constantly chase this need for more to satisfy this inner addiction, to fulfill trauma, to fulfill the need for pleasing other people's opinions or maybe somebody's opinion that you didn't have in your life while you were growing up. And this can get very deep. I'm not going to obviously share everything on this one video. There's plenty of topics I want to share with you moving forward that I will be sharing with you. But I really want you to ask yourself this. Like, I had to ask myself this because I'm not telling you you should believe what I'm saying or I should, you should rethink everything. But I'm asking you to really ask yourself, what do you want? Because I remember being in college and I would tell people this is when like Christian Guzman and like Connor Murphy and like Elliot Hulse and all these guys were making money from YouTube videos. And I was like starting my fitness journey at the time and I was like, I want to be able to get paid to work out and eat. That would be sick. Like, if I could just get paid to work out and eat and live my life, like I'd be living the dream and people would laugh at me. In college, I remember I had people laugh at me when I told them that. They're like okay, that. That's awesome. Good luck. And I was like, you guys don't get it, because I was following these people that were obviously doing that.
And.
And it's funny how the bar raises is what I'm saying. Like, you go from wanting to get paid to work out and eat to $100,000 a year, $100,000 a month, $250,000 a month, $500,000 a month, a million a month. And it just keeps going and going. And you might be hearing this and you're like, yeah, because you're ambitious. You want to keep going for more. You want to keep striving. And that's true for sure. But if it comes at the cost of sacrificing what you actually truly value and what you actually like doing what you want to do, then that's something that's not actually true to you. And for me, it was that exact truth. There's a Bible verse that I forget off the top of my head right now. I'm going to pull it up while I'm speaking that Jesus told to a bunch of people when he was preaching a sermon.
And.
It talks about a man who find buried treasure. So I'm going to type it in right now, and I'll share with you because I think it's really, really powerful that you hear this as well, because this is relatable to the fisherman story. Okay, so Matthew 13:44, it says, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy, went and sold all he had and bought that field. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy, went and sold all he had and bought that field. This parable from Jesus paints a picture of the kingdom of heaven as something so valuable, like buried treasure, that it's worth giving up everything else to obtain. It symbolizes the deep value of a relationship with God and the truth of his kingdom, which may not be visible or obvious at first, but once discovered, becomes the most treasured thing in a person's life. I remember at the beginning of this year, I was so fearful of losing my status, losing my position, losing my authority, losing my team, losing my business, losing my control of everything that I was acting frantically and I was investing desperately. I paid $64,000 to an accountability coach to basically continue programming me to believe that I needed to achieve this. This thing that I said I wanted.
And.
Didn'T really want anymore. And I was afraid that if I didn't invest that money, I wouldn't, I wouldn't be living my true purpose. And so I paid. But deep down I was just like questioning. I was like, is this the right. I don't think this feels right. Like, this doesn't feel right. And it's like what Alex Hormozi says sometimes, or you hear these people say, say these things, and it's like when you can't decide between two things, the answer is no. And like the answer was no. But I just, out of people's opinions and out of my perception of how I should be acting. Well, when I invest in money, I make more money. It's like, just do it. So I paid $64,000 to this accountability coach, and then I paid $27,000 to join a mastermind to continue indoctrinating myself about million dollar months. And then I paid $14,000 to another mastermind about paid ads to help me scale. And it was just like these, these investments to keep like short almost dopamine hits that like, okay, well if I just invest this money, then it'll satisfy this craving that like, it'll, it'll distract me from this deep down desire that maybe this isn't really what I want. And so I spent all this money because I didn't trust myself. I valued other people's opinions and other people's expertise versus my own, versus my own gut, my own inner sense, my own intuition.
And.
That Bible verse that I just read you about the hidden treasure. I cannot tell you how peaceful it was. Yesterday I was able to go to the beach. I woke up immediately, went to the beach with my wife. We spent the entire day at the beach under the sun, swimming, having good food and soaking up the Miami, the Miami sun. And I was just totally detached. And I did nothing. And for the last few days, the last few weeks, I've been lazy. I've been super lazy. I've been like the laziest I've ever been on paper and like working less, thinking more, reading more, breathing more. And it's been like the most fun I've ever had in my entire life in a long time. I've been able to actually like, read and study and like think and be creative and come to a place where I'm actually willing to share insights like this, stories like this, which the former me wouldn't have been able to do because I've been so uptight, so professional, so focused on like being this person that I have to be to You. And yesterday was the buried treasure. I found it. You know, I feel like I found it. I feel like the fisherman found it. He already has everything he needs. He's happy. He's found the kingdom of God buried in a field and he just bought the land. But the businessman comes in and tells you, nah, you should be doing all this, dude, you could do this, you could do that, could do this. And he's like, and then what? And then what? And why? And why? And why? So what? So what? So what? I already have everything I need right here. I'm already doing what makes me happy. And it's so funny, because when I look on my life and what makes me happy. The last almost two or three years, I've been telling the same thing to my wife, to my family, to my friends, whenever someone's asked me, dude, what would you do if you had a hundred million dollars in your bank account right now? What would you do for fun? And I always say, I would host masterminds. I would host masterminds around the world with some of my friends, bring people, other entrepreneurs who are all working towards similar goals, and bring them together and have amazing experiences to share insights and learn from each other while also traveling the world and having a ton of fun. And if you look at the last few years of my life, that's what I've been doing. But I've told myself, oh, I have to keep doing all these other things to do this. It's like, dude, you could do whatever you want. You could literally decide right now to do what you want to do and stop doing what you don't want to do. It's beautiful, really. You can literally just decide to do what you want to do right now. The problem is you, like me, probably have a fear of actually just admitting it, of actually just doing it. And I would encourage you to think of the fisherman, the Mexican fisherman, who knows what he wants. And I would ask yourself, what do you really want? If you had a hundred million dollars net in your bank account right now, you never had to work again in your life, what would you do for fun? Would you be doing the things you're doing right now, or are you doing those because other people have told you that's what you should be doing? Think about that. And when you do, remember the fishermen. I'm not saying shut everything down. I'm not saying quit everything you've been doing. I'm just saying to think about it, because maybe, like the Bible verse as well, you already have hidden treasure buried in the field, the kingdom of heaven, which is already within you. To be able to be happy right now, to be able to be alive, to be able to feel dangerous, to be able to feel like you're aligned with what you truly should be doing and release the fear of everything that you probably think you should be doing. Remove everything that is stuff that you know you shouldn't be doing. Right? That's the risk you have to take. The risk to do what you really want is the risk of shedding your old self, of coming to Jesus, coming to divine God. Whatever you believe in, it's all the same thing. It's all just happiness, love. It just comes back to love, love. If you don't love it, why are you doing it? Why you should love it? And not all times. It's not going to always be love. It's not always going to be, you know, like sunshine and rainbows, obviously, but it's like, at least then it's worth it, right? Like, at least then it's worth it. What do you love doing? I love masterminds. I love coaching. I want to work with clients that I want. I want to focus on profit. I want to focus on making $100,000 a month profit. I want to focus on having a lean, small team. I want to focus on being able to wake up without an alarm clock, to be able to go hit the beach, to be able to take calls when I want, not have to do sales calls if I don't want. Not have a sales team, be able to work with clients that pay me on a monthly recurring basis and a yearly basis because they want to learn from other people that are around me, just like me, and travel the world, have experiences, be a part of a community, build relationships, host events, bring people together like it's all possible. And when you just decide that that's what you want to do, you can do it if that's what you want to do. Whatever it is, you can do it. But you have to take a risk. And that's what I believe. The Bible, Jesus, Osho or Anthony de Mello. All these books, these philosophy books that I'll keep sharing with you more and more as I continue studying them are all saying, you got to risk the known for the unknown. You got to be willing to be seen as someone who's mad, who's someone who's crazy, someone who is like lazy because you know what you want.
And.
And if you feel like you're behind, if you feel like you're lost in life, if you feel like you're trusting other people's opinions more than you're trusting yourself. I would encourage you to take a step back, to really ask yourself, what do you want? And to really think about that, to sit on it. Because I can tell you right now, life is not worth living if you're doing it for the sake of pleasing other people. And it's probably because for a long time, you simply just were not happy with yourself. And when you can come to terms with that, and we can really come to terms with that, and really think to yourself, man, what do I love doing? What would I do if I had all the money in the world? What would I do if I didn't care about what other people think? What would I want? What would I do? Then you'd probably be like the fisherman, too, because he knows what he wants and he's already doing it. And he's not going to listen to the businessman, the person who tells him what he should be doing. He already has everything. It's so funny. Yesterday I came home from the beach and I was just like, oh, man, I was just. I surrendered. I felt like for the first time in my life, I surrendered. I was like, dude, I'm going to surrender. And I felt this immense pleasure. So much so that, like, the littlest things I started recognizing made me so happy. And then you start to live life by design. Because then you can say, I want to do this, I don't want to do that, I don't have to do that. I don't want to do that, so I'm not going to do that. And then you have control. You don't have to live someone else's playbook. You don't have to live to what someone else tells you to do. How you should run your business like this, how you should structure this, how you should do that. It's like, dude, do whatever you want. Yes, there's playbooks, yes, there's models, yes, there's recipes for success, of course that can help you. But at a certain point, you have to trust what you say is best for you. And when that happens, just remember the fisherman. So I hope this video has helped you. If it has, let me know. Leave a comment down below on what you think about your take on this is. And until next time, keep smiling, keep learning, keep growing, and I'll see you in the next one. Peace.
