This is a YouTube video titled "In business you have to be their manager before you are their friend #shorts" containing a monologue recorded on September 4, 2023. The speaker discusses the challenges of transitioning from being a friend to a manager, emphasizing the importance of having difficult conversations and prioritizing business needs over personal relationships in management roles.
One of the hardest skills to learn is how to become a manager. Not just a leader, but a manager, because those are two different things. A leader can be a founder, just like I was when I was first starting off my advertising agency and I had all of my best friends working for me. But it was very hard for me to have hard conversations with them because I wasn't a good manager. I was afraid of what they would think of me. I was afraid of maybe ruining that friendship. But ultimately, if you want to become a good manager, which you have to, to be able to hold people accountable and, and have them achieve the highest version of themselves and have hard conversations if they're not performing for the role they're playing in your business, you have to learn how to have uncomfortable conversations and play the role of the manager and not be worried about them being your friend, whether they stay with you or not. Sure, they're your friend first, but managers have to do what's best for the business and they have to have uncomfortable conversations. This is a hard skill to learn, but the sooner you learn it, the easier and less stress you'll have. Trust me.
