A speaker reflects on lessons from their first mentor about why marketing and sales are the foundation of business growth. Without converting leads into paying customers, other departments can't exist.
The most important lesson I learned working for my first mentor was that marketing and sales is the oxygen and lifeblood of your business. Because if you think about it, without marketing, you don't even have qualified calls or leads to be able to talk to and sell. And without sales, doesn't matter how many leads or calls you get into your business if you can't actually convert them into paying clients and customers. And the only reason why you have customer support or HR and finance is as departments in a business is because you have enough lead flow, enough call volume, and enough clients and customers coming in to be able to justify having those other departments to take care of the support, to make sure your clients are getting results, to make sure your money is being tracked and spent profitably. But without marketing and sales, none of this really matters because this marketing and sales is what drives the business growth. That's why he taught me that marketing and sales is the oxygen, the lifeblood of your business. You need to focus on it as a CEO of your business if you really want it to grow.
