50 Year Mystery Solved Uncovering Abdullah's Life

In this documentary segment, researcher Tima Vlasto resolves a half‑century‑old mystery by piecing together archival evidence from Atlantic City, New Jersey. Through newspaper advertisements, census data, church filings, and copyright registrations, Vlasto reconstructs the biography of Modeste Abdallah Guillaume. The records reveal that Guillaume was born in North Africa—sources list either Morocco or Algeria—and grew up speaking Arabic. He immigrated to the United States in 1889 and pursued a classical baritone career, training under the prestigious Lamperti vocal tradition. Between 1905 and 1909, Guillaume performed with the Williams and Walker Glee Club, the pre‑eminent Black musical‑theater troupe of the early 20th‑century, marking him as a professional touring artist of significant historical relevance.
