It becomes the most precise description available of the actual mechanism by which extraordinary things come into existence. Michelangelo looked at a block of marble and saw the figure already complete within it. His work, as he described it, was simply the removal of everything that was hiding the form that had always been there. Mozart heard entire symphonies in a single moment. of interior perception, the complete structure in a single moment, the full orchestration, the finished work, and then spent the subsequent hours transcribing what he had already heard.
