Dryfire Day 9 - Measure what you are doing

Brooke Cheney reviews her 5x5 classifier results, comparing draw times, reload times, and penalties to her previous session. She cut penalties and sped up reloads but shot slightly slower overall, and she's aiming to improve every metric at her next qualifier.

The button I meant to click. Wait, but there's more. Hold on. All right, so maybe that wasn't the button I meant to be pushing either, but it gave me a few moments to get the dog in here so you don't have to listen to barking. So I got that going for me. All right, today is day 9, I think is what this says somewhere, and I just came in and I shot my 5x5 classifier, which is how we started this whole thing, um, talking about that. So here's the deal. If you're gonna do something like live dry fire, you wanna make sure the stuff that you're doing is working. And this is why when I have brand new students, I am trying to make sure that they come in, they don't leave me for a very long time, and then they come back. Because when you learn something new and you're working on it and you don't necessarily know what the impact is of the thing that you're doing, you wanna try it again. So we did the classifier a week and a day ago or 2 days ago. I tried to count and I'm like, my count is off. So anyway, we've got the classifier, we've got the numbers, and let's see what has happened. Oh, I see a whole bunch of comments. Well, I see 5 comments that I'm gonna ignore for a moment, but I'm gonna say hi to you all in a moment, I swear. So what are we doing? We're gonna look at my results. So if I hit the present thing and I say share screen and then I go to the window and I pick the thing, then poof, it should pop up. There it is. And for people like DJ who watch on a phone, I made it as big as I possibly could. So, um, yes, DJ, this large font is for you specifically on your phone since DJ is here. And I didn't even know that before I did that. Uh, Crabby Turtle, apparently this is a good time to catch you. And, um, all right, so here we go. Here's the deal. Last week, July 23rd, is when I shot my classifier. My raw times, which are the time it takes to shoot each string, are right here. Now, my total raw time was 26 seconds, but I got 10 points— oh yeah, actually, now I'm thinking about this, we should mark that in red. Yeah, because we don't like that. Um, I got 10 points of penalty points by where I hit the target for a total time of 36.68. Now this week I've been doing dry fire and we've been doing the draw time. Um, these are my draws from last week. What I did was do math because math is good to be able to figure this stuff out. And for some of the strings that I shot, I did better in the amount of time it took me to take that first shot. So 0.06 is me doing better, 0.9 was me going slower. Now this string 2 here is one-handed, so I knew I lost a bunch of points last week on that one-handed one, so I was much more specific, to, uh, pay attention when I'm taking that first shot. And yes, wait, my mouse is on the wrong place. So DJ, yes, I reduced my penalties. However you look at my raw times, I did go a little bit slower, um, for my raw time for spring string 1, almost a full second slower. Well, no, half a second slower. But, um, string 2, my raw time again was larger. However, because I didn't get all those penalties, I ended up with a better score overall. My reload was faster. We went from 3.47 to just a flat 3. So I had some improvements, um, but not everywhere, right? So looking at those numbers, the raw numbers were mostly slower. However, like I said, that -10, it wasn't 10 seconds slower, right? Uh, so I still had a better overall score at 36 versus 34, and better— less penalties, yeah— and faster in 2 out of the 4 draws that I do for that, and faster in my reloads. Which were the things that we were dry firing this week. So doing the eye exercise, watching my sights, right? That's what I've been doing last couple days. The first couple days we did just draw, then one day we did reloads. But even just that one day, I dropped my reload time for almost a full half second. So this is how we go. I will do more So, all right, so, um, what's his name? JJ asked, what are your goals for next qualifier? Here's the thing, the goals are really simple: a little bit better. Like, uh, we just looked at— when you look at the, uh, numbers, it's not better overall yet, right? So my, um, draw on the first one was faster, my draw on the second one, which is a one-handed draw, was slower. My third draw, which is draw 5 shots, reload 5 shots, was slower by 0.8 seconds, the draw part, but it was faster by almost half a second on the reload. So basically, if I was gonna pick a goal for my next qualifier— classifier, um, sorry, it is a classifier— but, um, What it would do is maybe see if I can get all of these numbers to be negative and not by a specific amount. Because even if I get the little pieces, I mean, the raw time negative would be lovely, which is not currently. But hey, we can work on that. Wait, what? How is putting your broadcasting for the next competition going, Cameron? Unless you're flying up here, I'm pretty sure I do not have that set up and ready to go. It's so funny. I'm used to having my hair up and I just realized it's all falling down right now and it's weird because I can feel my hair falling down. All right. So yeah, I don't have a broadcast team for the next competition. And to be fair, my like real goal here is just not to be dead stinking last because that's what inspired this, right? I was actually dead last in my category and probably in the entire match. And the goal is to be a little better than that. Unlike a lot of my friends who have very specific things and we can get there. Well, I'm not just doing that in this month though. So that's where we're at. I am. Yeah, I'm not doing a comp, but who knows who will decide they want to come. I can have friends videotape. That's usually what happens on your squads. Is you will— you can hand your phone to somebody if they're not up next. We can always talk about, uh, what the etiquette is when you are at a range, um, when you're in competition. Generally, if someone's about to shoot, on-deck shooter, or just shot— well, those actually about to shoot and on-deck shooter, or even in the hole— those are the 3 people you don't talk to because they're busy looking at what they're they're rehearsing how they're going to shoot their stage. If they're serious about it. If they're like me, they're like, oh yeah, okay. All right. So DJ says, agreatstartshooting.com. If you want to check out more about what I offer, I'm about to offer a whole lot more. For those of you who are on my mailing list, you will be getting the August newsletter probably tomorrow because it's already later than I expected today. So yeah, so go here and I think you can actually sign up to go to the list. It is officially August. It is NSSF Shooting Sports Month as well. I'm offering a First Shots thing, which is another thing I'm supposed to plug and I keep forgetting about it. So hold on, because DJ is here reminding me of these things, I'm going to share with you one more thing. If I can find it in a timely manner, because, you know, internet is not always as efficient as we would like it to be. So hold on, where are you? All right, so copy link address. This should work. Hold please. This will post up on both of you guys. Oh no, that is not good. Hold there. Hmm, let me try that again. One moment, please. Landing page for first shots. Okay, we'll try this one instead. See, DJ, you get me all like promotional and stuff. Ta-da! All right, that should work now. Um, landing page for first shots. If you've never shot, you're here in Connecticut or New England, because I do have students from all over Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey, and New York, obviously, because you gotta pass it. But anyway, feel free to share this with your friends who have never ever shot a gun. And that is what I have. Oh wait, now we have— please hold. Or wait, you're just making fun of me because I had to hold. So that's where we're at for shots. If you've never touched a gun, or you've got friends who've never touched a gun and they're curious about firearms, this is absolutely the event to go to. And now I'm gonna go, I'm gonna cook dinner. But I was up, I posted, we are good. I will be working on bringing all of my numbers down at least a little bit. I don't know if it'll be one week or two. Oh yeah, DJ's, you know, feeding me all of this stuff. I do have a Patreon channel. It's, it's a work in progress currently. So that's what I got for y'all. Good night, everybody. I gotta go cook dinner for the kids and I will see you tomorrow. Tomorrow will probably be an upload cuz tomorrow's way busier than today.
