Three instructors demonstrate how to safely load and unload a revolver, using dummy rounds. They explain why the basic safety rule shifts when the cylinder is open, then show proper hand positions for the cylinder release, ejecting spent cartridges, and verifying the chamber is empty.

Here's how we're going to load this and we're going to unload it.
So, in Module 1, we talked about always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
With a revolver, we're about to break that rule, and let me explain to you why. When I'm going to load my gun, I can have— you need to come over so you can see the top—
I can have my gun pointed downrange, down on the table, when my cylinder is here, because this is where all the ammo goes. The ammunition is here, the firing pin is here in the gun still, so there's no way for this gun to go off while the revolver cylinder is open. When it's open, I'm going to put— again, these are dummy rounds in here, they do not go off—
once they're in there, now once my gun is pointed straight downrange, now I can close the cylinder And now I must obey that rule of always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. When I'm done shooting, I need to unload this gun. With a revolver, just like before, I'm going to take that half turn. I'm going to move my finger so it's away from the trigger area. My thumb goes on this latch that is the cylinder release latch.
It's going to go towards the cylinder. My middle finger and my ring finger are going to push that up through. My middle finger and index finger come all the way through. I get the trigger guard basically to the base of my palm. My pointer finger and my pinky finger wrap around the frame. Now we're putting it straight back up. After you fired the ammunition, it will not fall out like that. You need to put your thumb on the plunger so that you can move the plunger. I'll get wider.
Yeah, pull away so you can see the whole thing. Now that I'm done emptying my gun, I verify by looking in the cylinder.
So see that there's nothing there anymore, and then I will just put it back down on the table.
