Mental Health Matter - 9PM EST because that's when we do this

In this Saturday‑night livestream, host Brooke Cheney (joined by co‑host DJ) leads the ongoing "Mental Health Matters" series, which began in 2018 as "Suicide Prevention Saturday." The session opens with a reminder that two‑thirds of gun‑related deaths are suicides, framing mental‑health awareness as a key strategy for reducing firearm fatalities. Brooke frames the evening around the theme of "focus," arguing that what we choose to concentrate on shapes our emotional state, behavior, and ultimately our safety. She weaves personal anecdotes—her own knee injury that ended an Olympic‑skiing dream, her father's repeated suicide attempts, caring for an aging mother, and daily caregiving responsibilities—to illustrate how reframing setbacks as redirections can foster resilience. The conversation also covers practical habits (limiting news consumption, monitoring physical health like heart rate, regular exercise), community shout‑outs, and interactive focus exercises (finding one’s pulse). Throughout, Brooke emphasizes a perspective shift: life happens "for" you, not "to" you, and focusing on positives can counteract the mental‑health triggers that lead to violence. The livestream includes numerous participant roll‑calls, brief humor interludes, and a call to share the message (each viewer reaching one more person). The tone is conversational, supportive, and occasionally humorous, with a hopeful yet realistic sentiment toward mental‑health challenges.
Chapters
Yes, that's what I prefer. Hello everybody. Yeah, so if I'm looking in the wrong place, I got a new monitor and it's taller, so everything's a little bit weird. Wait, so let me try to center myself a little bit. Hey everyone, welcome to Mental Health Matters. It is Saturday night and why are we here? Because We know because we are educated that 2 out of how many? I know y'all can say it in the chat. 2 out of every 3 gun deaths that are out there are actually suicides. And if we'd like to save lives, especially those that die by gun, we need to talk about mental health. And so every Saturday since 2018, we pop on here on a Saturday night on Facebook, on YouTube, on other places sometimes, sort of, maybe. Um, sometimes I'm on LinkedIn. I might have done that for tonight or not. No, it does not say that. So anyway, here we are. Yeah, okay, so DJ warned me the G23 was here when we were doing the pre— we were in the green room, and he's like, preemptively, you might want to say this is not gonna be a 2-hour live stream. So, um, you know, dude, when I started this, for real, it was like 5 minutes and then sometimes it might be 10 minutes. So if we go by that original casting of the 5-minute, maybe 10-minute thing, I'm already 300 times more than when I started. So if you look at that number, then you know it's longer than it once was. Um, I see Gwebs is out there spreading fake news as well. I see how that is. Sure. Okay. Anywho, yeah, so maybe someday I am actually— oh, look at all you folks out here that DJ is going to have to say hi to. All right, you know how I go. I'm going to— oh, wait, so I'm going to reach out to Saria Van just to say real quick, I'll try to be calm and quiet and hope that you're drinking lots of liquids because part of mental health is that physical health that we have. Right? When we don't feel good, it's harder to be good. Um, so anywho, hi everybody, thanks for popping in, saying hi, all of that. As long as you say something in the comments somewhere here, um, DJ will be able to shout you out in about 10-ish minutes, 15, somewhere in there. Tonight we are going to talk about focus because that's kind of the key to everything. Thing. If you focus on being happy, well, you have a better chance of becoming happy. If you focus on everything that sucks, which is what the news tends to do to us, and that's why I stopped watching it in 2005. I stopped watching the news before everyone thought it was cool to stop watching the news because I knew it was fake news. And one of my dear, um, mentors, I will call him because I love following him and we've never met, But Dean Grazioso asked the very astute question, which was, when was the last time you watched the news and felt better afterwards? Wait for your answers. Pretty sure nobody. But anyway, if that's the case and you don't feel better after doing it, then why do we do it? It doesn't pay our bills, and if anything, it drains our mental health. Right? So we do really want to watch what we feed our brains, and the news is just not one of those things. Now, I will tell you, I tell people all the time, I don't watch the news anymore. And they're like, well, but how do you get your education? I'm like, because I pay attention to the actual stuff that's happening in my communities and in my state and the places where I can actually do something about it. It's here in Connecticut. We are very anti-gun world and state. And because of guns, because I got in a competition, I started traveling all over the place. I started getting educated about firearms. I got educated about all of the regulations that are out there on firearms. And I found out, hmm, what prevents violence? Oh yeah, wait, that's part of why we're here every Saturday night. Mental health is actually the number one thing. Because what is violence? Violence is anger. What is anger? Lack of ability to control one's emotions and communication breakdown. Because I don't know about you guys, but I know if I happen to lose my ability to converse with you and I'm desperately trying to get across a very important idea, at least I think it's very important, and you're not picking it up, I believe that's when we give up, throw in our verbal explicatives, yes, and once the verbal explicatives hasn't worked any further, then that's where we tend to add in maybe perhaps some of the physical ones. So breakdown of communication creates violence, and inability to regulate our emotions creates violence. So mental health solves everything. However, it doesn't mean that we can just all fix it in one fell swoop. Uh, we all have differing ways to deal with our stuff, but I talked with DJ prior to this, and tonight's focus is focus, like I said just moments ago. And I'm keeping your comments in the side, so DJ's going to star them for me if there are things that he's going to bring up as I'm talking so I can stay on target for at least a few moments. 'Cause you all know when I actually have notes, I try to stay on track. Now, INOS223 would be thrilled if I would just go off and keep going and going and going. But you all know I'm in my shooting attire because I'm teaching all day. And then you know what I'm doing tomorrow? I'm teaching all day. So I do need to go to bed. All right, that being said, All right, ready? Ready for your focus test? All right, hold up two fingers. Wait, go like this, go like that. Oh wait, no, apparently I'm not— wait, do I have a pulse somewhere? All right, do y'all find it? Do you find your pulse? Usually I can find it a lot easier. Apparently I'm actually dead. All right, so anyway, for those of you who are better than me at finding your pulse, I'm just gonna say, can you feel it? Yeah, okay, so there's focus for a second. For those of you who can actually find it, I actually find it a little bit easier here, honestly, um, and you can feel that little thump, thump, thump, right? All day long. From the moment our little heart organ started pumping in our mom's belly, that thing has been pumping along, going pump, pump, pump, so that all of that blood goes through our bodies and all the oxygen we're breathing in gets all the places it needs to do to do all the things that needs to get done. And how often do we actually notice it's going thump, thump, thump, but for this quick moment when I made you try to find your pulse, whether you played along or not, you actually might have thought about it. Oh, I found it there. That was easier. Yeah, this is where I find out my mom all the time. So if we focus on stuff, we find it, right? It took me a minute to find it because like for real, I couldn't find it here. I'm like, I'm pretty sure it's in there somewhere. But here was a little bit easier, probably because I'm not talking through my wrist. So that being said, focus. We— stuff that happens around us all the time. One of the things Tony Robbins talks about is we are deletion creatures, right? We have so much information coming at us all of the time, right? Here we are on YouTube. You guys are sweet enough to pop in here for our 15-20 minute chat. Maybe just because G23 is here, I'll try to make it to 30 minutes. Um, but We have so much info coming in at us all of the time. If I actually paid attention to everything that is around me— pictures of my family, pictures of, uh, gun stuff, first aid, um, I got the Constitution up here, I've got guns and mental health over there, I've got Litchfield Parish news over there, so my pile of bills and paperwork, uh, Who wants to pay attention to that? If I paid attention to all of that all at the same time, I get nothing done because it's too much. So we delete 90% of what is coming at us on a regular basis, but we focus on a couple of things, right? And you get to choose what those things are. So this morning I was at the gym.
Yay me! Woohoo!
Round of applause. Um, so I was at the gym and a friend of mine comes up, gives me a fist bump, and we're chatting for a moment or two. And I'm like, it's only my third time this week. And my friend reminded me, he's like, well, there are some people that never make it to the gym. I'm like, there is that. And I put it up on Facebook, for those who watch on Facebook, it's my personal profile that this is my third time this week. And instead of focusing on, I wanted to make it 5 times but only made it 3, instead focus on the fact that the previous week I made it once. And so back to that percentage thing, right? So I made it 300 times more than I made the previous week. So what is that? It's It's progress, not perfection. And I know we are super awesome good at minimizing anything we do really well and maximizing anything that we screw up. So if we focus on changing the tables where we pat ourselves on the back for real for doing those good things and minimize the fact that nobody's perfect Everybody screws up on a regular basis. No one wants to be perfect because perfection is boring. Because if you're perfect all the time, then how could you ever improve? And where do you have any accomplishment? And that sort of thing. Oh my goodness, Mr. DJ, sir, are there some things here that I should pay attention to, or would you just like to say hi to everybody at this point in time? And then I don't have my DJ. So maybe he stepped away.
I'm here.
Okay. All right.
Yeah, I do want to say hello to everybody, and there was only one person that I saw out there in the text chat that found something positive in television, and that was, uh, Rob the New York Outcast said sometimes the weather is a good thing.
Yeah, and I said TV. I said the news specifically. Regardless of what format. So yeah, for sure.
But yeah, as part of the conversation, uh, Viejo said that he canceled his TV cable subscription altogether, and even the local news is hard to take. And I can relate to that for sure. Other than that, we got some good conversations happening out there amongst everybody joined in together. There are lots of people out in the crowd tonight, and so I would like to welcome in Jamie, JH586 Gun Websites is out there as well. Viejo, welcome into the room. Mike Ballinger is out there in enjoying live. Sorry if I had 93. G23 is out there wanting that 2-hour cast, so is Chasing Ghosts. Kentucky Rim Fire and Hobbies, how you doing? Abigail Sorcha Finnegan is in the room. Kisser Gary's out there. New York Outcast is out there. And Guns and Barbecue in about 5 different forms has joined us this evening as well. And for now at least— wait a second, last minute entrant into the room, we got Hillbilly Up out there, and he's got a show later on that I'll try and link to. But that's your roll call.
Awesome, thank you so very much. I'm not touching any buttons, I'll let you touch buttons. Yeah, see, literally I have to hold my hands up because I will say that I'm not touching buttons, then I will touch buttons, and then yeah, it just doesn't work out well. Um, so yeah, Abigail, that might be cheating if you're already using blood pressure cuff and you're already pounding from cardio. For sure, that is Easy. Wow, it is definitely easier when your, uh, your heart rate's going a little bit nutty. Uh, my mom has some challenges from time to time, and you know, for those of you who don't know, uh, 75, 76-year-old female should have a resting heart rate of 70s, 80s, 60s, somewhere in there. And, uh, the other day we were at the, uh, at one of her doctor's appointments scheduled, and her heart rate was 140. So it was really easy to find her heart rate because you could just watch her, and you could just watch her just sort of, you know, yeah, all of that. So, um, anyway, uh, yeah, so Saria fan gets workout from manual labor at Kroger. Well, I will tell you, um, and I agree with, uh, where he goes see, problem is I go click on something, then other things disappear. Oh, all right. I swear I saw a G-Webs thing that said gun gym workouts are good. Oh, Guns and Barbecue. See, that's my problem. I looked at the wrong person. All right, so gym trips are good. However, I've gotten even more exciting is that I have a home gym now in our garage, and bodyweight workouts work as well. Now, to be fair, Abigail, I do not have a full set of armor. I don't even have like a full, um, what is that, chainmail? If I just had chainmail, chainmail is pretty good because it's a little bit easier to put on than the armor. Um, so there is that. Although I do have a ghillie suit. That just makes you hot and sweaty though. It's not actually that heavy. So Uh, there is that. Um, today was not legs. Legs was yesterday, and I actually thought I was going to be sore as all get-out today. And my mom— I got my mom to work out, my 76-year-old mom. She worked out legs with me yesterday. I thought we were both going to be like really mad today that we weren't going to be able to walk. I was wrong because, you know, that happens. So All right, um, all right, onwards and upwards. I'm not gonna continue scrolling on up. I'm gonna go back to looking at other things so that I don't get distracted by all of you wonderful people saying comments on the side. Okay, so, uh, what does it mean? Sorry, I'm going by my notes. I'm just trying to jump in. So I talked about focus, right? We got to choose where we're focusing. If we focus on the stuff we do good, when we say good job, then the more we focus on it, the more we do good stuff, the more we pat ourselves on the back, the better we get at it. Because again, it's very easy to squash ourselves because we are the only ones who know all the things we've done wrong. So we've got a big list, and then there's people out there who don't know us and say, oh my gosh, you're so amazing, you do so many things and it's amazing. And they don't see all the things that we think that people should be not excited about us for. And that's just me talking for me. I don't know what you've got going on over there. So, um, I am only talking about me. I'm sure you do not do anything wrong. You got it all together and you don't make any mistakes ever because That's what I get to see when I look at y'all, because when do I see you? I see you here. And what do I see when I see you guys? I see you guys cheering me on, and I think that's awesome. So I think you're awesome. So that's how that kind of goes. But back to how I— I don't— I shouldn't say we— how I will— can beat myself up very easily. I have to constantly remind myself to focus on the positive. There are lots and lots of stressors in our world, and for those of us who are in that age range where we are taking care of our declining parents and at the same time we're taking care of our children, so we have two caregivers in both directions, up and down, and there's lots of stuff to do, plus you get to manage your own stuff. So With all of that, remember these words because this is what keeps me sane: I get to. I get to help manage my mom's finances. I get to help my kid figure out which they want to do in college. I get to do the dishes. I get to do the laundry. I have clothes, which means I'm allowed to get dressed every single day. I have too many clothes, for real, and I should get rid of some of them, for real. And I get to get rid of some of my pants because they're too big now. Barbecue and I have talked about this a little bit because he too is on a weight loss journey and he's kicking some butt. So I'm just going to give him that little shout out right here since he's here in many forms. Because I don't know which forum he's showing up at. And for those of you who don't know about the stud comment, just in case he didn't fill you all in, because I briefly saw that he went to the doctor the other day— Barbecue went to the doctor the other day, and the doctor said he was in such good shape that he didn't need him anymore, he needed a veterinarian because he was such a stud. Yeah, I'm just gonna stop there. Anyway, I couldn't resist. It was funny at the time. It was funny in my head. And those look like rats to me, but they're supposed to be squirrels. So just in case we didn't know, those are supposed to be squirrels. Um, and no, I don't know why I thought I saw G-Whips instead of you. I really don't know. All right, what are we going to do? Make decisions, okay? Right? If you and I get to decide what we're going to focus on, then we have to decide what we're going to focus on. I can easily say focus on the good, and honestly, I think one of the best things for me is realizing that you have the opportunity to make the decision to focus on anything you want to, because most people lots of people— I don't want to generalize terribly— a lot of people think that life is happening to them. Like, why did this happen to me? Why did that happen to me? Why is this happening to me? And just like those little— that little thing where I'm like, remember this, I get to— when you realize life is happening for you, and in case I haven't told you this story, or maybe I just haven't said this story in a long time. Some of the things in my life that seem to be the worst thing ever— and going into knee surgery, this kind of is apropos— is that when my dad was supporting me and he was gonna make it so I could try out for the Olympic team for freestyle skiing, and I didn't think I got into the college of my choice. Guess what? How many colleges do I apply to? Well, I applied to one because that's how much of a non-overachiever I might have been as a high school student, because I knew the one that I wanted and that was the only one I cared about. So I applied to one college and I was super excited, and I never heard from them. So Dad said he to support me for the year, and I would get to ski for the year, train. I just had a job while I wasn't skiing. And so he set me up in a condo. I got to go to Waterville Valley Ski Academy. I got to live in Waterville, New Hampshire. And this was going to be my season, and I was super duper excited. And I get there I get my job, I'm training, I'm doing ballet, skiing, aerials, moguls— I suck at moguls but did them anyway, right? And it is 2 weeks before Christmas, I'm practicing ballet. One of the things that we do are flips, and I do a flip and I land wrong and I blow that knee out. I'm pointing at the knee I'm getting replaced. Probably in November. Um, and that destroyed me. I'm 19 years old, this is my shot to go to the Olympics, and I'm not going to the Olympics. That was probably one of the worst Christmases ever as far as this 19-year-old was concerned. And I was mad, I was angry, I was pouting pretty hard. And it's that thing where some stuff seems absolutely horrendous in the moment, and there's no way there's going to be anything good that comes from this. And yet that is part of my story that allows me to be here in front of you. Because had I gone to the Olympics, I would not have met my husband. I would have not gotten my pistol permit, probably. I would have not lived here in Connecticut for the rest my life. I would have ended up in California or God knows where. So this is why when you have bad stuff that happens to you, if you can remember that life is happening for you, not to you, but for you— this was a redirect of my life. It was where I thought I wanted to go, and luckily Jamie is here, so I'm going to talk to Jamie about this, but this is where God wanted me to go. Right? Because we have an idea of what we think we want for ourselves. And then those of us who have faith, whatever your faith is, uh, there's a little bit of help pushing you in the direction you are meant to go so you find the things you're meant to have. So when we get to focus on things that way, it helps. And when we get talk about stuff that seemed like tragedy at the time, and we know that it was just a redirection to get us in the direction that we were going to truly find our happiness. Because I am super happy that I'm married to the man of my dreams, and I have two amazing children, and I have to have all of you guys here online because you guys are definitely part of my family, and I appreciate that greatly. And I get to come on here every Saturday night And yeah, there's some Saturday nights where I just want to stay on the couch. Yes, there are. But I get to come here and I remind myself that I get to do that with you guys. So, all right, where are we? We're at 24 minutes. All right, so no California. Yeah, kind of. Well, at the time I thought that was gonna be like the worst thing ever. Um, and yes, I may have actually said peanut butter and jelly that day. Um, and yes, I did have a very nice dad. Um, and part of it was my dad's life. His mom— my dad was a horseback rider, and my dad was actually invited to be on the Olympic team for hunter jumpers, and his mom said no. And because his mom said no, he's like, I get the yes, because he was so very sad that he didn't get to actually go to the Olympics, and he had been invited to go. Um, so yeah, his dad was kind of getting back at his mom by letting me go. And so yes, life is happening for me. I hope you keep it and share it, because each one reach one. Because ever since the 1970s in Amway, in my grandma's living room, and I understand how if I tell one person or I tell two people Well, and here it says there's 17 people online watching right now. So if all 17 of you tell somebody, then poof, we've got— what is the math— 34 people that might know that life is happening for them and not to them. Um, so, and yeah, New York Outcast, life, uh, changing perspective can be a lifesaver if you can change your own perspective, because you are the only one who is in charge of that. I can't change it for anyone, um, but I can still help and hint and suggest that perhaps there's another way to look at things. Um, so— oh, Abigail, my friend, did you get your package? I just want to know, um, because I don't know. And Jamie, what were you going to the Olympics for, or are you just being silly? I don't know, because you would be amazed at how many different sports there are that people can go to the Olympics for. So you probably know someone who might have tried out for the Olympics that is not me. Uh, let's see. Yes, I was saved. Absolutely. I like carpets. They're fun, although I have a hard time telling the difference between between the ravens and the crows. Although I'm pretty sure at the Dunkin' Donuts there are ravens because they are huge. But I don't even know that we have ravens here in Connecticut, honestly. All right, there, I suppose. Actually, I know someone who works for the Paralympics, so that's always a possible possibility. Wait, I'm playing far behind by Candlebox. Oh, oh, oh, sorry, my poor brain went to— I'm playing behind a candlebox is how I read that. Um, let's see, your dad overdosed. My dad got talked off of the side of a mountain when he had a gun in his mouth. So there you go, there's one person that I saved, sort of according to the police report, that did not pull the trigger. Because, uh, in the police report it did say that, you know, they were called to a suicide attempt and my dad had a gun to his head, and someone said something about that, um, Keith said, well, he can't do it because his daughter would be mad at him or something like that. So I might have actually helped prevent a suicide. So that is awesome. Sorry, chasing ghosts. It was just like, yeah, Dad didn't OD, but he, uh, he attempted suicide multiple times. So, but he also had the opportunity to OD as well. Heroin was not a good friend of his, along with oxy and a bunch of other things, mostly, uh, prescription drugs. But once he was able to stop talking doctors into prescribing him stuff, it went to more street stuff. And Viejo, for just out of curiosity, how exactly did California get better this week? Excellent. Okay, um, yes, sorry, I did already have plans for the stock and grip. Okay, so anyway, I'm glad you got the grip, or yes, yes, the stock and grip. Sorry, I don't know what the parts are called that I sent you. That's how good I am. All right, so Hillbilly's gonna continue on with the humor for this evening, uh, and it's true. If— well, but so wait, maybe I think once back in the '90s when I was still bartending, we might have had Chippendales dancers. We had— I was— never mind. But yeah, maybe, we don't know. But yes, probably but maybe your wife wouldn't have met you if you were a Chippendale's dancer instead. So, okay, let's see. Um, the 9th, get better. All right, sorry, I'm trying to get through. Yes, well, right, but the bigger one, they're far away, is the hard part. And without my glasses, forget about it if I can see the different shapes, but I do try. Um, And yeah, my daughter's got Loki all over her. She's got Loki blankets, and I actually have— yeah, so anyway, all those things. All right, how we going? All right, 29. Oh, there's our 30 minutes, GT3. Can we go now? Oh wait, no, no, sorry, I'm slowly getting caught up, right? Just 90 more minutes, that's all we need. But we can't because see this laughter that Hillbilly is showing us? Yes, this. He's got to start his show in about 40 minutes because he doesn't really start at the top of the hour. The chat starts at the top of the hour, but he's just a little bit after the top of the hour. Um, yeah, so if anybody wants to know more about this story G23 and I talked about that. Geez, what was that now, 2 years ago? It's gonna be a little ways back in the Mental Health Matters, which back then was called Suicide Prevention Saturday. Um, we talked about this, uh, G23. Now, the shooting himself was the final attempt, not the first attempt. Um, he tried the uncut, the 8-ball of uncut crystal, the 3 bottles of Tylenol— sorry, yeah, the bottles of Tylenol, 3 different attempts— and the shooting himself in the head was the final straw, which actually brought him to God. And so it's a cool story, you should go check that one out. And like I said, it's going to be way back there because it's been a minute or 10, I don't know exactly, TT3, if you remember. Post that up. Well, anyway, okay, so Jamie did not go to the Olympics for basketball, but that's okay. No real talent? That is not true, sir. We all have amazing talent at something. Uh, you have an amazing ability to be grandpa, and I don't know what else. What else? I don't know. You make me smile every time I see you. And I love your beard, and there's all sorts of reasons why you are awesome and amazing. And here's that other thing about what you focus on: we all know stuff that nobody else knows. Nobody else has the same experience in life that you have. It's like, people like, oh, you should write a book. I'm like, maybe, maybe not. It's got a different life for sure. But so do y'all. It's like Tara, oh my gosh, uh, Chasing Ghosts— for those who don't know who Tara is, uh, drives all over the country literally because that's her job. And I've heard trucker stories. It's amazing what happens when you can look down in other people's cars. So Tara's got stories, um, and you know, Jamie, my gosh, you've got this huge ginormous family and you know, you love God and you love talking about the Bible and that sort of thing. And Abigail has got armor and she can just do cool armory things and talks about pantheons and that sort of stuff, and it's got tons of information on that. Guns and Barbecue, also former truck driver, so I'm sure he's got lots of stories. And so anyway, uh, all right, so GT3 thinks it was 2 years ago that had that conversation. Um, and what did I miss? Oh, I didn't miss anything, I don't think. Uh, or did I? Yeah, probably this with the needle in his arm. Yeah, so the difference, uh, your dad versus my dad— my dad decided to go, hey, look, honey, my track marks are healing. It's always interesting when your father is the one telling you that. So, but yes, I am sorry for your loss, and it is— it just sucks. Everyone's gonna go at some point in time. None of us are prepared. Uh, we are less prepared when children die young. We're a little more prepared when addicts are dying, but it's still— we always hope that there's a way to get get them to stop. And you know, when people die when they're old, we always say, oh, they died too young. And I'm like, we're gonna die eventually. So on that happy note, TJ, what do you think? Um, oof, yikes. Um, yeah, sorry, Abigail's, uh, handful of sleeping pills and gall liquor don't mix. No. Definitely not. And yeah, well, you know, keep fighting. That is what Morgan does. That is the Morgan way. So, all right, there you go, Jamie. That was the other thing, right? We all have gifts from God for a purpose, and that is to glorify him. And you do that very well, my friend. All right, so with that, honest to goodness, DJ, I saw you unmute. You can really unmute for reals.
Yeah.
I'll even push the button, it throws you up there. So, uh, so GT3, I went extra long just for you. I hope you're happy. That's now 350% longer than I usually go. How about that? All right, Mr. DJ, would you like to do your thing and say goodbye to everybody? All right, yeah, right on.
This is a great show, Brooke. Thank you for hosting every week. Um, Gun Website specifically was out there this evening thanking you for that., and I thank you for being here every week for— on behalf of all the rest of us kind of deal that's going on.
