Mental Health Matters - Just one thing

In this live‑stream episode of the Suicide Prevention Saturday series, host SPEAKER A (Brooke Cheney) and co‑host SPEAKER B (DJ) guide viewers through the episode’s theme “Just One Thing.” The hosts open with informal banter, then introduce the central premise: pick a single, small, repeatable action each day (e.g., making the bed, a brief prayer, a short meditation, or a brief workout) to build momentum, reduce overwhelm, and improve mental health. Throughout the show they share personal anecdotes – cycles of weight‑loss and regain, upcoming knee‑replacement surgery, and past struggles with “the how” trap (citing Tony Robbins). They reference a popular “Make Your Bed” article and a YouTube video, using it as a concrete example of a simple habit that can set a positive tone for the day. The hosts read live‑chat comments, highlighting community members who report their own “one thing” (making the bed after prayer, completing a long‑standing song, finishing a reloading‑bench project, etc.). They stress the importance of asking for help, especially during recovery, and encourage viewers to write down their own small accomplishment before the show ends. The episode closes with a recap of the key message: avoid over‑complicating tasks, focus on one actionable step, and use that as a springboard for larger goals. The tone is conversational, supportive, and occasionally humorous, with occasional religious references that are presented as personal preferences rather than prescriptive doctrine.

All right, I keep forgetting there's a little anime me and I get to like wave a lot because y'all see my hands up like this all the time. Hello everyone, welcome to Mental Health Matters. Uh, tonight we're going to talk about just one thing. Um, so I'm going to just start off because the last comment I saw just before DJ hit our button so that we would turn on was Saria fans What's up? And all I can think of is the, um, yeah, that thing. Um, oh my gosh, the What's Up with the Wonder— Wonder— oh my goodness, DJ, for the love of God, what is it called? Where they've got Aquaman and Batman and Superman and all of those things. Um, but anyway, maybe someday I will find that. Hello everyone, I'm so excited to see you all. I'm a little bit better than last week, so thank you for giving me race to get off of, um, out of 9:00 PM last Saturday. So for those of you who do not know why I skipped 9:00 PM last Saturday, y'all just go watch the video from last week at 6:00 PM, because I'm not going to talk about that tonight. So, because Moo would like to pretend that we are all happy people, so we're going to stick with we are all happy people. So, um, yeah, so sorry, I'm paying— we have before the end, maybe If not, I will put it in the comments at the end, or, you know, before I go to bed. But yeah, there's like, I think it's like Aquaman and Batman and Superman and all of that. And I'm sure that I'm taking Marvel and DC and squishing them because I know there's a difference, but I don't know what the difference is. So anyway, we will find that. And it's also before your time, chances are. It's an early internet thing. So Um, yes, or we can go Oops, I Am Batman. No, not that one, barbecue. But we can always go Happy Happy Joy Joy and go back to the '90s, I think it was, with Ren and Stimpy. Um, which there was the first set of, um, cartoons that I have seen on drugs ever. So I can understand what was after 9 o'clock. And now we have SpongeBob, which to me is the same thing. So anywho, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, because DJ is watching things for for me. So I'm going to click off of the side chat, otherwise I'm not gonna get going on what I planned for y'all tonight. So Suicide Prevention Saturday, Mental Health Matters, Just One Thing. What is that one thing we're talking about tonight? Hmm, what could that be? Progress? Could be progress. I don't know. We'll have to see how this goes. So first, because there is a delay in this thing, I want y'all to take out a pen or, you know, your finger if you're on a mobile device, you can just write things. But I want you before the end of the show, you got time to think on this. I want you to think of one thing that you are happy you accomplished today, this week, this year, this month? Just one thing that you're like, oh, I did that. Uh, because this kind of rolls into a whole bunch of things, so, uh, this is going to be a little bit awkward— not awkward, out of— I thought I had an order, but now I'm messing the order up. So, you know, luckily for me, DJ rolls with these things. So here in Connecticut, we have the Litchfield Parish Neighbor, and this is put out by our archdiocese, I think. Um, yeah, I don't even know if that's the right thing, but it's Catholic media. And why am I showing you this? Well, because they called me and they said, hey, would you like to put your school in here? We think you'd be a good fit. So I said yes, and every month— this is my third month— and in here, and every month they give us a different placement in the, um, in the layout. So this month I am not on the front because no one is on the front. You open up the front and there are a couple people there, and then there are some featured people, but I'm not paying that kind of money. However, next page, oh yeah. There it is. Wait, this is really hard to do. There I am, right down there. Great start to shooting school. Voilà. And here's the thing that makes me super happy and excited about this particular placement. It's at the bottom of the Make Your Bed article. For those of you who have not heard of making your bed, and I don't mean like you've never known how to make your bed, there is a lovely YouTube thing. If you type in make your bed, and DJ actually already did this, or he is doing it now, um, get the link for you. But it is an admiral talking about how important it is to make your bed. Now, in said article here, it says make your bed in the morning. You wanna know why? It's the first task of your day that you can complete. Think about how good it feels to make a check mark next to or scratch out a task on your to-do list. Doesn't it make you want to accomplish more? Plus it's a practice in discipline. If we do one simple thing like making our bed, we have accomplished something first thing in the morning or whenever it is we roll out. 'Cause I don't know if Bubba happens to watch the replay on this or not. I don't even know what hours Bubba works anymore. But one small action will set you in the right frame of mind for the day. And if your day turns out to be dismal, you'll have a well-made cozy bed to collapse on and decompress at the end of the day. So I love this article. So that's why I had to bring— show you guys that I've got an ad in the right under here. And that would be just how life happens sometimes. And it— I mean, the advertisers have no idea that that is my favorite article in the entire possible world, because one little thing can change the rest of your day. If we do one thing— remember what I said, pull out your pen or your finger or whatever it is you're typing on— so you can put in like one thing you've done, whether it's today or not. Is my bed made? I don't know, I try to do it most of the time, and it does make me happy to know that most of the time when I go to bed at night— I know I did clear my bed off today, but I'm not entirely sure I made it— but one little thing, because one little thing leads to the next thing, the next thing to the next thing. It's sort of like if you work out, right? That one thing is I need to do 5 reps. Well, how do I do 5 reps? I do them one at a time. I need to walk 10 miles. How do I walk 10 miles? I walk one step at a time. So one little thing, the focus for tonight, just one thing. So you guys remember, I'm— I don't want to give them because I'm not looking at the the comments right now. So don't tell me what the one thing is yet. I will ask you at the end. But remember why you're doing that one thing. Now, I was listening to Tony, which is in the description there or there. You can see Facebook up there, YouTube down there. And he said, beware of the trap of how. So let's say I want to lose 50 pounds. Well, I've done that more than once. Well, we'll go with 40. I've actually lost 40 pounds more than once since my child was born. I have gained, well, weight. So I weighed 265 pounds when my child was born and I've gotten myself down to 20 pounds and then I go back up to 260 pounds and then I go back down to 220 pounds and then I go back up. Yeah. So barbecue and I've had this conversation a few times. So I know how to lose the weight. And if you ask my husband, he will tell you I am not lying when I tell you this next part. Just because I know how, it makes it so hard to do because I make how so hard. And this is what Tony Robbins was talking about, where we get stuck on the how. Because how do I lose weight? Oh, it's easy, you just eat less, exercise more. Got it. Okay. And then our little brains, my little brain, tend to go with, okay, I just have to exercise more and eat less. Got it. Oh, what am I going to exercise? Don't know. How am I going to get to the gym? I don't know. How long do I have to exercise for? Hmm, I don't know. How little do I have to eat? So I hope you guys are picking up what I'm putting down here. The how can be the trap of accomplishing anything. Hence the pick one thing, do one little thing because that one little thing can build on the next thing. So we are about to have a heat wave. It is starting now cuz I'm hot. So with that, DJ, I've gone on for a whole 10 minutes. I'm gonna assume that, uh, you have a welcome list out there for everybody, so I'm gonna let you—
I do, buddy—
while I read the comments, and I'll be quiet.
Right on. Well, this evening I'm pleased to be joined by so many people out there, and among them are the Krabby Turtle Patriot, In the Dark Guns and Barbecue, that gun website's out there, Chris Broncato, the Atomic Pump is joining us, so is Sariafan93, got Mike Bellinger, Fiota, Rockwoods, Same Ways, 2 Live Moo. Hillbilly Up's out there, so is Viejo and Abigail Sorcha Finnegan, the last one in the room. And the comment that I wanted to bring up first was Hillbilly's comment. He says, my bed is second after prayer in the morning. So that's a good combo. That's a way to get it started off right.
Very cool. Yes, though I did catch up a little bit on the things. And in my handy-dandy little article here, at the end it says, adulting is stressful. Find a hobby that makes you calm, even if it's just for an hour at a time. And after that, what it says is pray. Feeling lost? Pray. Not sure what job to take? Pray. Struggle to make the pieces fit together? Pray and then wait. God may not always provide a quick answer, but he will provide one. And, um, it is just one of those things. We need our quiet time, and we need to be able to take moments to listen to our inner voice and hear when God chooses to talk to us. And we can't hear that unless we take that moment So that one thing can be that moment that you take from prayer to making your bed. And I'm like, I was looking for the thing and I couldn't find it, but here we go. Guns of Barbecue, all your reps at once. Secret to achieving Chisel's godlike physique, which I easily maintain. Doing individual reps is for mortals. This is true. And I am still a mere mortal without a doubt. So, um, although I do like G webs. When I wake up now after reading that, I take a moment to watch the maid make the bed, and I reflect on things. Sometimes I'll tell her if she isn't going fast enough or if she misses a wrinkle, and that kind of cracks me up right there. Um, because, you know, everyone should have a maid, and it's awful nice of you to notice for her, um, whether or not, you know, there's a wrinkle or not. And there was something— oh, I see where Hillbillies was. Okay, that was a P. Yes, we are preachy tonight because we believe in God, and if you don't believe in God, that's not my problem. So whatever gods or goddesses or whatever you happen to believe in, I am not here to judge, but I am happy to be a Christian. So there you go, barbecue. And yes, Hillbilly, I'm sure that you are glad that she has not figured that out yet. All right. For people like poor, poor DJ, who's on a little tiny phone, it says, I'm happy that my wife has not figured out she could marry better. And you know, we have to have simple goals sometimes. So anywho, welcome everyone who just came in. I hope you all have a spectacular night. So Just one thing. Whenever you wanna get something done, sorry, I'm not praying. I'm trying to catch mosquitoes now. So barbecue doesn't think I'm all preachy and whatnot, but that's okay. But praying is a good thing too. All right. So your one thing, when you want something done, figure out what the one thing is you need to do. I personally am absolutely in the world of overwhelm and I get sucked into that how thing. Like, I don't think I heard Tara out there, but for those who haven't seen Tara Smith's cooking show, um, I watched Tara cook and I'm like, oh my gosh, that's so cool. And the reason I don't do it is because I make it too many things. I'm like, oh well, first I gotta figure out the recipe, then I gotta go find this stuff, then I gotta go buy it, then I gotta go chop it, then I gotta go measure it. I'm like, no, no, no, no. I want a yummy, delicious recipe. Just do the thing. And it can be one thing and you have to start with one thing. So for all of that, um, when you need to accomplish something, just make sure you know what that thing is. And instead of getting caught in the weeds like yours truly does so very much, I, The amount of Excel spreadsheets that I have because I need to see stuff out. And the reality is I don't need to see stuff out. I have to actually just do the thing. Oh, Jamie, Jamie, you're a little bit late. You missed all the prayers and all the praying and all of the God speak, but that's okay. Well, you can watch the replay, but nice to have you here. So anyway, Sorry. I just, I pray for Jamie and Jamie, we were talking about God and stuff like that. So for real, whenever I see God stuff, I think of you, Jamie. All right. Yes. And Gun Websites, you are correct. The simple thing that I need to do is tell the kitchen staff to cook the thing. It's super easy. And here's, I mean, as much as Gun Websites and I might be joking about having maids or cooks or any of those things, although, I mean, for those of you who don't know, he probably does have all of those things. But here's the other thing, ask for help, right? Last week I asked for you guys' help and grace for not doing my show. This week, uh, I'm waiting to hear when I'm getting my knee surgery done. And so I'm starting to make a list of people, of actual people, because I need to be able to reach out and ask people to do stuff for me because my lovely knee replacement, the doc informs me, will be a solid 6 to 8 week recovery till I feel like I'm kind of getting to normal-ish. So that first week or two, yes, I do actually need to get people to come help and maybe do some vacuuming around the house. And maybe I will need help or have somebody vacuum, vacuum my bed, make my bed on those days. So sometimes that one thing is remembering to ask for help. So for those who are not here in the very, very, very, very beginning, that one thing— what is the one thing? So in the beginning I said, okay, take out your pen or take out your finger because if you know you can write on your tablet or whatever, or maybe you're typing with your thumbs, but what's one thing that you're proud of that you've done or just one thing that you do on a regular basis. We did pull up Hillbilly earlier because he prays every morning. Oh, there it is. Uh, bed is— making the bed is second after prayer in the morning. So Hillbilly starts us off because, you know, why not? Because that's the first one we have. So for those of you who are watching live, right now. Go ahead and type in the side chat what's one thing that you've done recently that you are happy that you've done, and it's one simple thing, not like you figured out the cure to cancer or something, just like one little thing that you know helps you, possibly on a daily basis, or maybe it was just this week made things better. Like today I got a package of food, I unpacked the package of food, and I put the stuff together And I cooked one of my meals because we have a delivery service that does that for us. So it's like having maids, but not really. You still have to do stuff. Um, and that's kind of that. All right, DJ. Oh my goodness gracious. Sorry, I let too many—
Yes, who's praying for the mosquitoes? Is anybody praying for the mosquitoes?
They might die. They just might die. But you know, depending on what Depending on what religion you're at, you know, they might just be happy to die because then they get reincarnated as the next level up. So there's, there's always that. I don't know who's going to pray for the mosquitoes. Um, all right. Really? I want to know if this is serious barbecue. Did you really lose 15 pounds this week? Was your heat wave early and you sweat it all off or what, dude? That's pretty crazy. Um, All right. Oh yeah, sorry, DJ. I was gonna ask you to look at the comments so that— and, and click them up. So that's what I was trying— starting to try to say. Oh my goodness gracious. Um, anyway, oh yeah, because I'm better off if I just don't look at them because, you know, I will just look at the next thing and the next thing and the next thing. All right, what's your one thing, DJ? Ha, I'll make you multitask, then I'll really mess you up.
A project that was, um, 37 years in the making actually came to completion just a few days ago. I could remember there are a bunch of songs that I wrote in the early '90s and performed and there was, there was only one that really lingered, uh, had just a rudimentary, uh, chord progression and the ideas for lyrics. But it's something that I default to almost every time I pick up a guitar to like just riff through it. Like, you know, somebody hands, you know, try this one out, and I like default to the same progression. And, uh, yeah, it was just a few days ago where it's now complete. It is first chorus, first chorus bridge, verse, verse, chorus, and out. And that's a long time to be percolating on a song. So I decided to— I've had other accomplishments. That's, I'm— that's not my proudest moment kind of thing, but I just thought that would be a good one to share.
One thing, just one thing, that's all. It's not, not comparing to all the rest of the things that we've done. It's just one thing that makes you happy.
So, and it did, and it does, but now it just bears a lot of repeating and practice if it's going to continue to exist. And I'm not going to be— another 47 isn't going to happen here. So I'm glad that it was completed finally.
Oh, sorry. Since I actually talked about Bubba and there he appears, I'm sorry. I had to bring that one up there because Bubba, I was just talking about how I do not know your sleep schedule. And I did not know it's Men's Mental Health Awareness this month. Shame on me, but I believe you. So anyway, very cool to see you, Bubba. I haven't seen you in a while. So anyway, all right, let's see. 15 in 2 weeks. Okay, 15 in 2 weeks. It's okay. We know you can't see the keyboard. So we'll give you a break, Guns and Barbecue. All right, well, you know, yes, your ears was itching. I thought it was your nose was supposed to itch when somebody else is talking about you, but I don't know. All right, so let's see, what do we have? What do we have? Um, no, Syria fan, you shouldn't be praying for the mosquitoes. But I don't know what Cthulhu is. Yeah, tell me.
I'll tell you after the show.
Oh, okay, then I don't want to.
I was not like that, but it's different.
All right. All right. So Jamie got his Sunday school lesson for tomorrow morning and cooked supper for the wives. Dude, I said one. That's two things. You just need one. You don't have to show off for everybody. But that is awesome. Yeah, before class, I was— before this show, I was trying to get ready for my class for tomorrow. I'm about 50% there, so being finished is also awesome. All right, okay. Ooh, Viejo, small project done at my reloading bench today. I've been thinking about it for a while, but I got it done. Yeah, aren't so— like DJ actually led off with, isn't that like the best ever? It's like, I mean, 30 years is a long time, dude, but it's just like when something's been rattled around in there and you finally check it off. It is so lovely. And part of it is also, I think we're like, why do we do that to ourselves? But something like a musical song, I can see why it could just sit there. Uh, what is this? I put new— I'm gonna say he put new line in the weed whacker, then realized it was out of gas. Okay, well, so see, that's two things again, because you put a new line in the weed whacker and you discovered something new to do. So, uh, let's see. Completed the school year in behavior disorders. All right, I'm not sure what that means, Woods. Does it mean that you have lots of disorders or you took care of all the disorders of all of your students? Um, but yeah, so my poor kid is not out of school until Monday, so Yeah, those are the students that Woods teaches. Yeah, no, no, no.
Yes, right on. I wasn't sure if you knew.
And yes, I know he, what he does in behavior disorders, but I'm still making fun of him.
Got it.
Because I can. Um, but yeah, but also to help you, but to help people who don't know what Woods does. So yeah, Woods is a teacher. He helps special kids, um, actually learn stuff. In school, and that is a special person who can do that for sure. And Mr. Gizzard Gary, I think we will just have to, you know, take out your sorreness in eggs since you have so many chickens. That is what I thought. But to catch you up, because I'm going up versus down right now in the, in the things, if you haven't already, Mr. Gary, do put down one thing you've done today or this week or this month or this year that has made you happy. Just one simple thing. We started off with DJ, uh, finished a song that had been rattling around his head for 30 years. Um, actually, sorry, we did start with, um, Hillbilly, because every morning he prays and then he makes his bed. Again, he's showing off again, two things. Jamie showed off a little bit too because that was two things. He got his Sunday school stuff. So Mr. Gary, that is what we're looking for. And Bubba, you too. Those of you who just joined us, um, Talking to the Morgan was enlightening. She's pissed. Yeah. Okay. I have a bunch of friends who just went on a Morgan retreat. Were you there, Abigail? I don't know. I don't do that. But yeah, that was only a couple of weekends ago. There is a big— anyway, let's see. All right, I'm caught up to all of the new things. All right. With that, the next mosquito may die. All right, where is it? I see people laughing. Uh, why do you never hear about vampire story in Africa? Well, they are hurt by holy water. Well, according to to-do, they bless the rains down in Africa. Todo? I'm like, to-do? I don't need another to-do list. All right, that one is good. That's why people are laughing at you. I get it. All right. Oh my goodness. All right. I think we're all caught up as far as I know. Okay. So with that, it's a whole 26 minutes and G2/3 isn't even here and I feel like I barely warmed up, but my short recap of this evening. Number one, advertise in print cuz it's still alive, but more importantly cuz you can be put under your favorite article of all times. And again, those of you who showed up late, go watch the replay. You can see the beginning again and I'll talk about this, but the importance of doing one simple thing to accomplish the things that you want to get done. Uh, some things you can make happen, like making your bed, and it's a simple task that you can do every single day. And it's okay if it's not every single day, cuz I don't do it every day. I just do it most of the days. Prayer every day is a beautiful thing. Meditation, talking to the Morgan. All of those things are important. Anything that helps you make that little tiny change in your day, um, drinking some water on the range, off the range, wherever you are, hydration is key to our health. So all of those things. And here's where I want you to not be like me. I don't want you to get stuck in the how. How do I do all of these things? How do I make this so much more complex than it needs to be? I know what I need to do. Just do the one thing. And like Viejo with a project sitting there in front of him on his, on his reloading bench, for example. My husband and I have the same conversation every single weekend. There's so much to do. So you just do one of the things. So there you go, my friends. That is what— oh wait, no, Fiona, sorry, I'm going to sneak you in. I'm going to sneak you in right now. More flowers for a quiet space on my front porch. Very cool. I actually enjoyed sitting on my favorite Mother's Day chair and it was lovely. And that can be your thing. You took a minute or 5 or 10 to do your prayer, your quiet time, whatever it is. Okay, Abigail, sign up for several courses for a minor in business management. One more thing to go towards the things that I'm assuming you want to get done. So, and yes, I know who the Morrigan is, and yes, it was a retreat for the Morrigan, and we'll talk offline on all of that if you'd ever like to come to the Morrigan retreat. So Anyway, it's okay, Jamie. It's all right. I just said one thing and you just said two because you're just so awesome and you can't help yourself. It's okay. So there you go. All right. I think that is everybody. And hi, Ron Tua. Oops. And then I hit the wrong one. So yes. I, I, I, I, I know folks, we can chat. All right. Um, Ron, welcome and goodbye. We're out of here. DJ, as you do so well at the end of this, please say hello and goodbye to everybody for us.
Right on. I am so pleased to see so many people out there. Thank you for remembering to come back— pardon— remembering to come back for a live on Saturday night. Bring a friend next week. And while you're out there amongst all the people that you're going to see this weekend, please remember to take a moment for some reflection as it's hot and it's gonna get hotter. Take a pause for the cause of your own personal peace. Meditate, pray, do that one thing that helps to keep you cool when tensions can be high. Just go out and get it done. And among those out there tonight, we had Crabby Turtle, Patriot in the Dark, Guns and Barbecue, Gun Websites, Chris Brancato, The Atomic Punk, Sorryfan93, Mike Ballinger, Fiona Brockwood, same way. July Moo was out there, so was Hillbilly Up, Viejo, Abigail Sorcha Finnegan, Jamie JH586, fella, thanks for coming in. Guy in the Comments was also here, so was Gizzard Gary, Bubba Triclops Ballistics, and Ron Two Way Matters, the last one in the room for the evening. So everybody out there, be safe, have fun, take care of your crew and yourself, and rock! We're out.
