Suicide Prevention Saturday... almost on time

Brooke Cheney, owner of A Great Start Shooting School, discusses suicide prevention on a live stream. Two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides, she notes, framing it as a mental health crisis rather than gun violence. She emphasizes faith, forgiveness, regular communication with loved ones, and self-care as ways to reduce suicide risk.

Oh yeah, I suppose like I should actually talk. Sorry, I was already reading, uh, DJ, uh, showing up at 8:45. I didn't even know that like you could comment before the thing started. Um, and Guns and Barbecue gave me the first thumbs up on, um, on YouTube. Yeah, so DJ, way earlier than normal. I know I've been starting early lately, but Not tonight. I was at a CCDL dinner, which is our Connecticut Citizens Defense League, and Guns and Barbecue, good job. I was thinking, I'm like, I gotta get on and get off because I gotta get to barbecue at 10 o'clock. I think that's when you're doing barbecue. So anywho, poof, I'm out of breath because literally I just ran down from the car because the CCDL dinner is currently still going on and my husband and children are still there. And I hopped in the car. And yes, so Francie, I just want you to know Harding was looking for you. He's like, where are you? Is she there? Were you there? I don't even know. So anyway, because he's like, is she here? And I'm like, I don't know. I didn't see you. So anywho, and I had to click on super fast because Facebook gets mad when you schedule something. And if you're not late, if you're you're late. So, okay, we're gonna go to Zen. Hold, please. I need to take a breath. One moment. All right, it's Saturday, so what does that mean? Tonight is Suicide Prevention Saturday, which also reminds me, I have a little banner. So for all of you who do this every weekend, if I show up and I forget to put this on, let me know. I know I've had lots of guests on lately, so there's a lot of that. And I don't know, I just want to try to remember to have this because that's important to me. Because Suicide Prevention Saturday is because 2 out of every 3 gun deaths is a suicide. And I think it's very dishonest of the media to call it gun violence because when you think of violence, you think of force on force, someone beating somebody else up, something like that. Suicide is not something that I think really should be categorized as gun violence because it's a mental health problem and it's a horrible mental health problem. And well, that's just that. That. So Suicide Wrench Saturday. Hi, my name is Brooke Cheney. I am the owner instructor here at A Great Start Shooting School. That's all my stuff behind me. That's my logo up there, and that's my name over there. So for those of you who are new, welcome. This is short when it's just me and you see no one else. We don't go for an hour or an hour and a half like the last two episodes I've had. If you didn't get to see them, I would highly suggest going to my YouTube channel because it's much easier to find these videos than it is on Facebook. So let's talk about God tonight. Are you ready? God, yes, the big G man. Why, why am I going to talk about God? Well, last Saturday, one of the things I left you with, if you stuck with us the entire time, because I know some of you reached out to me, said that was a really long interview, which it was. So in is calm because you're giving your body oxygen. Out is peace because you're letting go of stuff and forgiving things and that sort of stuff. So in is calmness and the oxygen your body needs. Out is forgiveness. So how does that work into God? Well, studies have shown that those who have faith generally tend to be happier. And faith is something that almost seems like you're not allowed to be faithful anymore. You're not allowed to be a Christian, Catholic. Oh no, all the guilt. Can't be Jewish. All of these things, right? People like, oh, it's just guilt and horrible things. And people do horrible things in the name of religion and all of this. But studies show if you have a faith, a true belief in something more than you, you tend to be happier. And I'm going to say that the faith I probably know the most about is Christianity. I've been baptized more than once, um, and so— but I've also actually read the Bible. And even those of you who are not into Christianity or that The Bible is an amazing book. If for nothing else, it's got some really good ideas. One of the things— and I'm not as good as like my little brother about this— but one of the things is never let the sun set on your anger. So remember how we started with the breath thing of calm, peace, letting go of your anger and making sure that you don't go to bed angry is so important. I had this conversation with my 15, 14-year-old just yesterday, and I'm sorry, I have to pause for a moment because A, I'm not looking at comments, but B, um, somebody had, um, asked me the other day how many viewers I wanted, and I said 10 would be nice, and y'all just hit 10, so I just had to throw this on and, um, I don't know what we were talking about when I missed all of your comments. I just popped up there. So don't let your anger— don't let the sun go down on your anger. My 14-year-old and I were talking about this just yesterday, and yesterday was Friday. Yes. Okay. Thursday was an exciting day. And when I mean exciting, I really mean challenging. And there were lots of rude things that happened on Thursday. And I left the house with my daughter in tears, and it was to go save my mother from the hackers. But really what it was, I had to go get my husband who wasn't answering his phone and that sort of stuff. So the worst feeling was leaving somebody, um, in tears. And when I got to where I was going, the Boy Scout meeting, I started talking to them like, I really have to go back because I left her in tears and it's the most horrible thing. So the reason we don't let the sun go down on our anger is because we don't know when our last time of seeing that person is. Now, how does that play into God? Well, if you believe there is more than us, that there is a heaven that you may go to or an afterlife or whatever your belief system happens to be, I don't know all of them, but there's always going to be more. So forgiveness, number one, for ourselves and for others. So where am I? I'm so very, very— look. Yeah. All right, so let's see. Believe in something. Not a huge Bible guy, but hugely believe in karma, power, universal reason. Right. There are 5 million things. And here's my thing. Thought. My, my thought when I was learning about Christianity is God, being an omniscient person, thing, entity, must have known there was more than one way. In the Bible it does say there's only one way, and that's through Jesus Christ. However, I think God's smarter than that, because I always figured the little pygmies— sorry, I don't know if this is horrible, but like the people that are out in the remote areas that will never see a Bible, will never read a Bible— like, there's got to be some way for to be saved, because the God that I know is the one who we talk about love and forgiveness. So, but the Bible stuff, like I said, lots of amazing stuff. Peace, forgiveness, wholeness, knowing that the forgiveness is the greatest gift from God, as far as I can tell, because why was Jesus here? To pay for our sins. The other part of the Bible is it's one of the most widely read books in the world. So it's the first bestseller self-help book out there. And I am just rambling again, so I apologize. This way, this one's gonna be really short because, um, we had lots of talking over the last week. You guys have like 2 and a half hours from me since last Saturday, so super short. All right, focus. Try not to go to bed angry. You never know when the last time is that you're going to see someone. Make sure you say goodbye or I love you or whatever it is that's important for them to know. Pick up that phone, call someone, let them know you're thinking of them. These are the simple things that can help people, and you never know when you inadvertently stop the suicide. We need connection. We need to see faces. We need to see smiles. We need to have conversations. We need to know that someone is thinking about you. And I have absolutely been the— sorry, darn it. I read some. All right, I'm just going to have to put it up now. Why are you so happy to other people, not to me, Mom? Donna, you need to smile. And I'm trying every morning, every night. Yes. And so here's the thing. My 14-year-old and I, daughter, um, we're having a conversation and we're actually talking about this, how it is the easiest thing in the world to be horrible to the people you love the most because we know they will accept us and still be there even in our worst. The challenge is it's so much easier for most of us to be super sweet and nice to a stranger because they don't know how to push our buttons, we're never going to see them again, we don't want them to think ill of us for whatever reason, but when we come home, the people that are around us are the ones that don't necessarily get the best of us, and sometimes it's just how it goes. And so Part of it is communication. Number one, communication with yourself, and then communication with those around you. And ideally, we want to break the habit of trashing our best friends, our loved ones, etc., our family. Now, some family is harder to be good to than others, but our children, our spouses, our parents. Yeah, my mom would tell you there are times where I've been less than graceful around her and vice versa. And my daughter will also tell you there are times I am less than graceful and nice around her as well. So trying to be aware, understanding the people that love you the most are not the ones who deserve your wrath, even if they will take it and still be there the next day. All right, let's see. PN Woods, uh, believe in your work, believe in the good of goodly folks. You indeed reap what you sow. Yes, and this kind of goes like the karma idea, right? Um, what you put out is often what you're also receiving, and whatever you're putting out or focusing on, you find more of it. So if you are miserable and horrible and life just sucks, you will, uh, was that— there you might wait a second. Oh, because she treats you like garbage. Sorry, I had to think about that one there for a second. Well, all right, so yes, some people are just jerks to other people because they are jerks. However, the idea is we need to become aware, because here's the thing: if I do this, what am I doing? I'm pointing at you. I'm pointing at you, but I have two fingers pointing at you, and I have 6 of them pointing back at me. And so often we want other people to have compassion for us, and we want everybody else to treat us well, and sometimes we forget they're having the bad day. So, um, and yeah, it's tough. It is tough. It's hard to always be nice and on, and I'm not sure I believe awareness of what we're doing and why we're doing it helps us realize, oh, wait a second, this is my kid, this is my child, this is my husband, this is my wife, this is whoever, my mom, my sister, that sort of stuff. It's understanding that, ooh, we need to be gentler to ourselves Because the sooner we're gentle to ourselves, then it becomes easier to be gentle to others. So I'm glad that I can make Guns and Barbecue laugh though. It's all good. So that's my karma for tonight. I made Guns and Barbecue laugh, therefore I am done. Anyway, have a belief system. Believe there's more than you. One of the beauties of that is everything is no longer your fault. Or it's not all on your shoulders. Uh, when bad things happen, knowing that or believing that there is a bigger picture for you and you're exactly where you're meant to be. These are the sort of things that can help you when you are distressed and upset. Why, thank you, sir. I appreciate that, DJ. Um, and just all of you who've not ever talked to DJ, because all of you just see his comments. He really does have a DJ voice for sure. So, and you're welcome, Catherine. So, all right, for real, it's 15 minutes. I'm like gonna be done here, but I could go on forever. The needs for— yeah, just so you know, I feel like a totally crazy person for— I left my family at a dinner so I could be here for you all. So I appreciate you, shining up— showing up, there's the word I'm looking for. Oh my gosh. Um, yeah. And, uh, oh yeah, nope, that is rough stuff, man. And this is the thing, uh, one of the things Tony Robbins talks about for when you're around damaged goods— and I hate to call kids damaged goods, but it's like Trauma is trauma. Like, it's— it— it— you feel someone else's trauma when you're around them if you're being aware. And this is back to the forgive yourself first, love yourself first, and no, I'm not talking like narcissist sort of thing, and fill yourself up. Because the brighter you can be and the more that you are calm and have that faith and believe in yourself, people will see that and they will be able to feed off of that. Again, stay away from sociopaths that just want to drain you like a vampire, but in general, filling yourself up, taking care of yourself is number one. And as women, often we're— feel guilty for taking care of ourselves. So, um, fill yourself up. Love, forgiveness, all of those things. And I think that's it. Tara's in last minute. She got in at the very end, so I don't know if that's supposed to be aloha. I don't know, or maybe some cool internet slang I don't understand yet. So you are welcome, PN. And I'm really gonna go because like I said, y'all have like 2 hours worth of show, 2 and a half hours worth of show from last Saturday and Wednesday for those if you didn't catch any of that. I will— ahoy! Oh, is that what that was supposed to be? Thank you for, um, translating. All right, good night all, love you. Left my family just for you, so I appreciate y'all showing up. Oh, thank you, Tara. See? Oh, and DJ thought he was so smart. Anyway, I appreciate you guys, um, What I've got coming up, uh, Sarah from Hold My Guns. Oh, Jake! If you guys saw Wednesday's, uh, event bonus session, Jake agreed to come back next Wednesday if we really want to get more into the weeds for suicide prevention, talking about what some of the real actual things that need to start to happen in our, our society to help people. If y'all give me a bunch of thumbs up or comment on Jake's interview, which was last Wednesday— like I said, YouTube is better to find because I also didn't do the full thing on Facebook. All right, good night all. I'm really gonna go now. I will see you later. I got a long class tomorrow. It's very exciting. All right, good night.
