Suicide Prevention Saturday - On the Road

In this live YouTube stream, host Brooke Cheney broadcasts from a New Jersey rest stop while traveling, joined by co‑host DJ and a lively chat of community members. The conversation centers on suicide prevention, emphasizing that two‑thirds of gun‑related deaths are suicides and that addressing mental health can also reduce violence. Brooke shares three practical daily habits for mental well‑being: (1) help someone else, (2) ensure your own “cup” is full before you give, and (3) deliberately seek out laughter—through jokes, movies, or funny clips. She ties these habits to the culture of the firearms community, describing gun owners as “fun people” who often volunteer, run matches, and raise money for suicide‑prevention causes. The stream includes roll‑call shout‑outs to regular viewers, anecdotes about family, church, and pets, and a series of knock‑knock jokes with DJ. Throughout, the tone is conversational, humorous, and community‑focused, aiming to normalize mental‑health discussion, encourage mutual support, and provide concrete, low‑barrier actions anyone can take.

Hey everybody, hey, welcome to Suicide Prevention Saturday. And why are we here? Because 2 of every 3 gun deaths you hear about are suicides. And if we really truly want to save lives, we should absolutely talk about mental health. And here's the funny thing that I get to tell everyone I talk to about this: if we actually address the mental health issues that would help people not cause suicide, we can also help reduce violence. You get a twofer if you actually start talking about mental health. So speaking of mental health, where am I? This is like a Where's Waldo edition. Hello, Chasing Ghosts. Um, DJ is here, so he will give everyone the official welcome at some point in time because I'm on the phone and I promised him I would not touch the phone because if I touch the phone, chances are I will end the stream because I will touch the wrong thing. So my hands will remain on the steering wheel. No, I am not driving. I am in New Jersey at a rest stop, and I'm almost to where I need to go, but not quite. So anyway, this is Revenge Saturday. 2 out of 3 deaths are suicides. So we are here to talk about mental health. What should we talk about tonight? DJ and I talked about stuff. I left him a voicemail on various topics.. And I really don't recall what topics they are. And so we had this little chat before this started as far as what the top— what exit. Sorry, Riding Shotgun with Charlie, he's having Chinese food right now because I was just chatting with him not that long ago. I do not know what exit. What I do know is there is a Chick-fil-A here at this rest stop, but I didn't go to Chick-fil-A because I didn't have enough time before getting on here at 9 o'clock for you beautiful and wonderful people. And, um, the line was too long for Chick-fil-A. So that's what I know for sure. All right. So, Sue Sharp Renton, what are we talking about? Lots of things. What is a simple thing you can do every single day that will help your mental health? Well, why am I— try that again. Why am I in New Jersey? A Chick-fil-A. Yes, it is good stuff. Why am I in New Jersey? I am in New Jersey because I'm helping a friend and to me, I forget sometimes how important it is that we help each other. None of us can do it all, all of us can do something and my car is going to turn on and off as we're sitting here so this should be even more fun. So if it sounds horrible, let me know, I'll turn off the car but then I don't know what's going to happen to audio. Helping someone else out. Here's the thing, we need to find— oh no, I'll pop me on stage. Okay, 5x5 audio. Oh boy, she's like, wait, am I reading this right? Brooke, phone dead, switching over to— it'll pop me on stage again. Oh, got it. Now I understand. DJ left, not me. Okay, so where am I at? Helping others. There we go. That's why I'm going to New Jersey, help somebody else out. Something we can do every day is help someone besides ourselves. Hello, Mike and Pam. And Mike actually, who just popped in here on the YouTube side, definitely helps people all the time. It was funny, I was talking to my son about Mr. Ballinger not that long ago, and we were just discussing about how much he likes to help others. Uh, he has found a way to help others and animals because he's helping with animal control and he's helping rehab dogs. So why is helping us, us helping someone else, you helping me, me helping you, how is that good for our mental health? Well, number 1, we are meant to be social creatures. We are not meant to only take care of ourselves. Number 2, we are pack animals. Because we are social creatures. So we are actually wired to be able to help others, and when we do that, those little endorphins and stuff, those go off and be like, oh, I did something good. Now, here's the thing about helping others. We always want to make sure that when we're helping somebody else, that we are sure that our batteries are full, that our cup is full, before we reach out and grab others. Hello, John Petrolino. Um, yes, I'm, I'm in Jersey. I'm closer. It's over on the Facebook side. Uh, oh wait, I said I wasn't gonna touch it, and, and, and DJ is gone. But there is my friend John. That is one of the people I will see later on tonight. Yay! All right, anything else you guys want to know? I think it's 5 minutes. We're good, we're done. No, not really. I All right, so helping ourselves, making sure we're taken care of. An easy way to take care of ourselves is to help someone else. I was at a Dunkin' Donuts and there was a gentleman who came in after me who was buying his coffee and he had a Ziploc baggie and a couple dollars and some change. And he was paying for his coffee out of his couple dollars and his change. I heard a DJ pop in, so there he is. Oh, now we've got double DJ. Uh, apparently your other phone did not actually die.
Um, the other phone is good, this phone not so well. The other phone is not so good, this one is much, much better, but it has its own limitations. So, uh, yeah, I appear to be a split personality this evening. And interesting that it's somebody rather resolute and, I don't know, kind of grim almost, and in his fedora, and then the happy poo guy.
So, oh, you know It's good. I mean, we're all split personalities and most of us have more than two, so we have that going for us.
Let's just not tell everybody that out loud or all the time. I understand what you said. I want to let you know that the Krabby Turtle is out there, so is Sariafan93. Chasing Ghosts out there saying hello. Riding Shotgun with Charlie decided to pop in. I heard you talking about which exit it was. Stay safe in that vehicle. Uh, who else do we have? Is that scrolling down? Gun Websites, of course, a fixture here. Mike Ballinger is out there. John Petrolino from the Facebook side. And 2 Live Moo just dropped in and gave a thumbs up.
And don't forget Pam, who's hanging out with Mike, so there's that too.
There we are. Hi from Mike and Pam. I only looked at the highlight name, right? I'm sorry for that.
I know. Well, they all— hello, hello there. Just as you finished, look who joined us— Mr. Hillbilly himself. So right on, there he is. So no matter what, uh, those of you who are new to this channel, welcome, uh, and for those of you who've been here before, thanks for coming back. And And for those of you who don't know, Hillbilly is on the YouTube side and he has a show right after this. Well, not right after this, sorry, at the top of the next hour, because I do know there are people across all of the different time zones currently. And so at the top of the next hour, whatever hour you happen to be in right now, will be Hillbilly's show. All right, so Helping others. When we help somebody else, we do get a happiness kick, basically. And here's one of those things, because I know most of you that are watching, and in general, those of you who know me know that I'm into firearms. And one of the things I say is gun girls are fun girls. And really, gun people are fun people for the most part. Because I do find in our community we like to help each other out. We like to go run matches and volunteer our time and help raise money for things like suicide prevention, whether it's for veterans or just in general. So helping us makes us better. Now, oh, Hillbilly on the, on the YouTube side decided to just do the full roll call, I think. So anyway, that— and oh, that's Hillbilly Up. If you're on Facebook, you can't see that, so that's the YouTube channel to go to at the top. The next hour— so I wish I could hide these things, but I cannot. So I'm just gonna go like this, and then I can't read anything, then I won't get distracted every 30 seconds. But, um, I think one of the reasons that gun people are fun people is because we get to help people on a regular basis. Whether it's helping run a match setup or do some work at your club, or just have a pasta dinner for someone in need. This is the other reason why church is so amazing, because you go to church on a regular basis and you get to meet another sub-community of your life. And at church, when somebody needs something, there's always someone baking a casserole, or there's someone going to visit, uh, that sort of thing. So when we talk about our mental health— oh, puppy! I'm sorry, there's lots of dogs around here actually. When we talk about our mental health, making sure that we pet our puppies or our kitties or whatever thing— there is an adorable, uh, chinchilla on one of these channels somewhere that cracks me up every single time. So taking care of others, there's something. Laughter, because the chinchilla makes me laugh. Watching an actual funny movie. What makes you laugh? What are some of the movies where it's like you just know you're gonna be laughing most of the time? And— or you can just like right now for a moment, you can think about a particular scene in any movie. Doesn't have to be like the full thing. Like, I don't know how many of you guys like Deadpool, but Deadpool Wolverine is coming out, or is out, I don't know. But Deadpool is definitely hysterical, even though it's not a comedy. But, um, there is a scene in Deadpool, the first one I'm pretty sure, because I'm also really bad at keeping track of these things, that I can think of the scene and it cracks me up hysterically. So, and yes, that person has really high beams. So, you know, look, I'm glowing. So anyway, all right, take care of other people. Take care of yourself, obviously, so you can take care of other people. Watch something funny or listen to something funny. Another thing I find myself trying to do on a more regular basis is listen to comedians, right? Goodness knows we have a wide variety of folks to listen to. Now, if you're older like me, uh, Saturday Night Live used to be hysterical. And you can go to some of the older clips of it on YouTube because, you know, there's just clips everywhere. I don't know if there'd be anything like that on Facebook, but, um, so skits that are done— when I was a kid, um, who is it? The Three Stooges did slapstick humor. Then Abbott and Costello and Who's on First and just plays on words and things like that. I even found myself reading my son's Boy Scout magazine and reading the knock-knock jokes. All right, are you guys ready? Here's— I have a knock-knock joke for you that my daughter has a hard time saying because she's laughing too hard before she gets to the punchline. So it's really hard to do it by myself. Wait, DJ, DJ, will you come on and do a knock knock joke with me?
Absolutely, here I am.
All right, knock knock.
Who's there?
Vroom. No, wait, wait, is that right? No, cargo.
No, it's cargo.
Cargo who? Yes, cargo vroom vroom.
All right, I got that one.
That's a groaner. Yes, it's horrible. But here's the thing, when my daughter tells that, she is laughing so hysterically. Before, she couldn't get— yes, I totally messed it up, Hillbilly. Um, but, uh, yeah, she's laughing so hysterically. Like, to get my daughter to play or to tell a joke is like the best thing ever because she— it's just, you laugh because she is hysterical. So anyway, all right, DJ, since I've got you though, is there some— like, Hillbilly's throwing up airplane for Roger Roger. Um, is there a scene that you can think of or a movie that you think of that does make you laugh?
I can, and I know that there are a couple people out there in the chat, if not everybody, who has had the opportunity to watch Blazing Saddles. The campfire fart scene I don't know if I laugh at any other part of that film, but that one gets me every time. And it's because I saw it when I was a kid when, ooh, farts are funny. So I get to have that transfer from my, you know, 8, 9-year-old self. I was probably a little bit older than that, honestly.
No, no. And say someone says— yeah, go ahead.
Sorry. No, I'm just— I was going to say that I do remember watching it with my father and my brother, so that's extra special. And I don't have a lot of memories like that that I feel so amused by, except the ones that included just my brother and I. We didn't really, as a trio, do that much that, that merited, uh, good memories or laughter sort of deal. So, but I have a knock-knock joke for you before we transfer out to those text chat comments. All right, and it's from the, what, May of '23 Scout Life magazine. I happen to have one, the only copy in the house.
So, okay, knock knock. Who's there? Ben. Ben who?
Been knocking for so long that my hand hurts. I know, double groan on that one. Yours was better.
Hey man, even with the glitch. Yeah, well, Gun what? Um, what was it? It's so funny. Uh, so one of my other ones I think of is Spaceballs because it has so much inappropriate humor. It is hysterical. Um, but yeah, it— there's— it's just one of those things where, I don't know, there's like— and some stuff just has to catch you just so for it to be funny, because have you ever tried to translate a joke into another language? It does not make sense. So we are, um, I don't know, knock-knock jokes, um Let's see, third grade humor is kind of like anything that— a fart joke always makes me think of 8-year-olds, regardless of how old you are. So, and there is that. Oh, Saria Fan, uh, South Park. There, South Park is hysterical. Someone told me that I really need to go watch the, um, Ozempic one that they did. He said that it was just so amazing. So, oh, Joe Pesci's lines in Casino also, absolutely. And, um, not just Casino, what is the movie where he is the lawyer? Because of— yeah, My Cousin Vinny. Yes, that one. That is definitely— oh, Letterkenny. Ah, Moo, for sure. Letterkenny is rocking hysterical, and it's like, it's so much fun because you watch Letterkenny, but then you also go on YouTube and you watch the, um, the bloopers.
Oh, it's—
it's— no, DJ, have you seen Letterkenny?
Oh, I most certainly have.
Every episode. I mean, I don't know. Um, so it's, it's one of those things. I just, I don't remember how I found it, but it's just like, yeah, that is awesome.
That has, that has comedy in it that is the lowest brow and the most amusing and subtle as well. It runs the gamut, and that's one of the appreciations I have for that. And not directly related, but another series in the same vein from the same people, uh, Trailer Park Boys, which I have trouble like converting people to sometimes, but that will crack me up on the regular as well.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, check this out. Hillbilly Up says me and DJ are not going to quote Trailer Park Boys. I was thinking of him specifically out there. Hey, Hillbilly Up. Oh yeah, I'm gonna— I need to cruise the chat for a second. And Chasing Ghost says this, you know, like our sense of humor in the '70s might have been different from now. I think we could still make something like that today, but I do understand what kind of— I hope what it is that Chasing Ghost is suggesting there, and that's because people have become humorless about some things.
So for those of us, they take everything a bit serious.
Indeed. And I just want people to understand that that doesn't have to be the present or the future. It is up to us to reclaim humor, laughter, and smiles. If we don't do it, the sour people win, or those who are so fastidious about the ridiculosity— yeah, I just made up a word— that it's hard. You know, we think that— we think, I do believe as a group, that it's going to be difficult or impossible to unseat that change. And I'd like to be a little bit more optimistic about it without being a Pollyanna. Let's just get the laughter back into things. Smile at people. The MCK influence of when you're out and about in your regular day and you see someone who's not wearing a smile, make one. It's really that simple. I'd also like to say hello. Besides Two Light Moo coming in the room, we got G23 also in the room. Jamie JH586 is out there. Hey, fella. I think that gets us current on the roll call.
All right, well, I had to look away because of what you said, because I, I earlier this week, or maybe it was last week, I sent DJ a picture, and I actually have the bag that I sent the picture of. And I know I'm really tiny, so I don't know if you can see it, but here it says Smile First. And then— oh, here, ready? I make it bigger. So here's the Smile First. And then it says, be the person to smile first and change someone's day. And it's in English and Spanish for those of us who need the Spanish version. But it made me think of DJ because DJ is always talking about, you know, be the one to do the smile. So there you have it. My dentist agrees with you.
And that is so— that was so stoking to see. No, not that I thought the MCK or my aping what he said. Was going to be completely original, but it's on a bag out on the East Coast encouraging others to do the same. I mean, what a tacit— an example of a tacit influence. That's— environment is important, and that was a cool part of it. So is this comment from Hillbilly Up: gun people are fun people, some exceptions, because my wife is a gun person and she is not always fun.
I get what he means there, but that's because she's your wife. So I actually just had a conversation with a gentleman who wanted to, uh, he wanted to get his wife a lesson with me, and he's like, well, will you do two people at once? I'm like, yes, but we'll spend twice as much time because I just like doing the one-on-one. And we had the whole discussion of no matter how much you love your significant other, learning together can be challenging, just like various other activities can be challenging no matter how much you love someone. Um, and I am so excited that August is my husband and I's 25th wedding anniversary, and we've actually been together for like 32 years. So I was slow to the altar, I'm just gonna say that right there, but I'm super glad I finally got there with him.
So no doubt. And you know what, I have seen your interaction with your husband. I had a really great dinner where I got to meet you in person in Vegas, and The interplay between the two of you was really great. You look like a great couple, you are a great couple, and congratulations a little bit early on 25.
That's, that's awesome. I am super excited. All right, I'm very sad for Tara, however. Um, let's see, see, this is the one thing that I can do, DJ, as I can touch the comments. Um, so wife is mad she left, came back with a food and none for me. That's just mean. That's just straight up mean, man. I, I know I could get mad at my husband, but I'll try to always feed him. But actually, she probably just expects you probably like your food better, maybe, possibly. So, but thank you guys for the congratulations. But it just made me think about stuff that makes you smile, stuff that makes you laugh. Um, we just got new couches, so much fun. All right, so 3 things, right? Number 1, help others, because helping others does make you feel better. Number 2, make sure you are taken care of. And the reason that's number 2 is because usually we're putting ourselves second when we're helping others and we forget to help ourselves. But if you're helping one, help the other. And then 3, find something that makes you laugh or think about something that makes you laugh, because Like, I can think of a particular scene in Deadpool that cracks me up every time. There's also the autopilot scene in Airplane that also cracks me up. And if you haven't seen it, you should go watch it. It takes a little while, but it's still entertaining. Uh, DJ, with that, I would love to continue on to my final destination. So I think it's time to say the— fine. Oh. Sorry, this is what happens when I can see all the comments. Mr. Jamie, I just can't even imagine that he has any jokes that he wouldn't be able to repeat in mixed company. I just find that highly unlikely. So hey, Chris has joined us now too.
Say hey all to everyone. Chris, you've come in, uh, kind of in the closing moments, uh, but welcome in. Brooke, I want to let you know the folks that were with us tonight were the Crabby Turtle, Sariafan93, Chasing Ghost is out there, Riding Shotgun with Charlie checked in, G-Webs, a regular, good to see him out there. Mike and Pam Ballinger are out there, so is John Petrolino from the Facebook side. Chasing Ghost is out there, G23 2 Live Moo, Hillbilly Up, and JH586. I mentioned Hillbilly Up, he has a chat coming up, uh, top of the hour on his channel. I'm probably going to be over there. What about you?
Oh no, you'll be on the road and driving Yeah, hopefully, hopefully I will be, be landing at my final resting spot, but I'm not really sure because I have no idea where I am relative to where I'm going to end up. Because when I'm done, I'll have a little conversation with John and we'll figure it out. So, um, so that is—
did you just mean to suggest that you know where you came from, you know where you're going, but you don't know where you are?
Uh, no, I'm not even sure where I'm going, honestly. That is currently variable as to what direction I'm going in from here, and I will not go until I talk to John, who is going to be my gracious host this evening. So I have a feeling since he's watching, most likely he is at home, but maybe not. I may be going to a fair after this. I may be going to his home after this. I don't know for real. So no, I really don't know where I'm going. So, and it's not even because I'm just blonde. So there's that.
So right on.
Anyway, and Hillbilly, you're always welcome for the plug. Thank you for always helping me as as well. Um, G-Webs, same. I know you guys all send people over here to have this chat as much as possible. And again, gun people are fun people, so I think that's where we get it from, and helping each other makes us happy. All right, DJ, it's all you, man.
Hey, I would just want everybody out there and in replay to be safe, have fun, take care of your crew, and yourself. Get some laughter in. And as always, rock! We're out.
