Everything Is A Test: Are You Ready To Pass -Episode 47 w/Coach Bryn

Coach Bryn argues that every challenge is a test of your actual beliefs, not just what you say you believe. He uses Peter's biblical story and athletic metaphors to show how adversity transforms you, and why conviction without action means nothing.

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back for another episode of the Mental Advantage Podcast. Time for a solo episode with me, Coach Brynn. And this week we're talking about something that's come up for me recently, um, or some interactions with clients. And so I want to talk about how when I coach my athletes I say everything is a test. Everything is a test. So now, is there some instances where I'm actually testing them? Yes, right? So there's certain words that I don't want you to use, like the T word, which it's 3 letters, it rhymes with Y, so I'll let you figure that one out. We also have like words like can't, right? We all know we're not supposed to say those type of things. We've sort of been trained into those since we were small children. Those type of things, right? So those are like the easy tests that you get, because when someone says that they believe something, life will find a way of testing you on it, right? As a coach, I may have my own tests, but then there's life's tests. And every time it's a test of your mettle— M-E-T-T-L-E, okay? M-E-T-T-L-E. But it's like really finding out what you're made of, what you believe, right? And since who we are informs what we do and ultimately what we end up having, then I want you to recognize that everything truly, truly, truly is a test. So when you say that you believe certain things, life has a way of finding out if you truly believe them. And sometimes we find that we're not as convicted as we say we are. In fact, Lisa Nichols, a famous motivational speaker, powerhouse speaker. I'm not quite sure how she would label herself, but I've known her to be a speaker, you know, a thought leader and things like that. But she says, "Your conviction and your convenience don't live on the same block." And so when you say that you are convicted about something, then you're gonna have to sometimes put that, you put your money where your mouth is and really say, so if you think you can be the best athlete on your team, if you really are willing to work hard, If you believe that anything is possible, life has a way of finding out. Is that actually something that you're going to stand by? And much like the story of Peter in the Bible— and not to go too, uh, spiritual or religious on you, because to me, if I knew of a story in another religious text, I would quote it— but you know, it's like Jesus told Peter, you'll deny me 3 times before the cock crows. And I think oftentimes we are Peter in this instance that we say, you know what, I'm totally convinced, convicted that this is true. But then as we are tested, as life really calls us out on the carpet to say, hey, do you really believe that? We find ourselves going, well, no, I mean, no, it's not true. So in this instance, I had a client this week that had an opportunity to do something really great and join coaching with me. And I will say that coaching with me is what's called a high-ticket program. You know, it's not necessarily a very small investment. And they— I was willing to extend a kindness to this individual to let them jump in on faith, right? And they wanted more concrete evidence before they took the leap, which most people would say. In fact, you might even be saying this as you're listening to this. That makes sense. I mean, you don't just go do something crazy willy-nilly. But see, the thing is, it's not just a test of what you believe, but remember who you are, or better said, who you are meant to be. So when you have an opportunity to opt into the greater level of you, because that's what happens, it's never about a financial investment or even putting your word on the line. It's so much greater than that. And And so once you get to a place where you recognize that that test of like putting yourself all in something, almost always you pass in the sense that it pays off dividends because you took a leap of faith, a leap of faith to go out for the team when you thought maybe it wouldn't work out, or, you know, put your name in for captainhood or to help a teammate out, or you just never know. But when you truly, truly step full into something, I would be willing to wager that it almost always works out because there's something big that you've kind of put on the line. Sort of like, um, this is a bad example, I suppose, but gambling. But like, when you go all in, right, there's a bigger debit, you know, the greater risk, the greater the reward. And yes, I know people say, but the greater risk, the greater loss that one can take. But when you are truly convicted, truly committed, truly all in It's like the doors of possibility open up for you, right? So I would be willing to say that it would be better for you to pass, you know, take these tests on full stride and know that even though it may be scary and you know that it's a leap, just know that there will be a place to land because the greater version of you is asking for you to sacrifice, sacrifice the former version of you to be able to birth the new version of you. So when I say everything's a test, it's a test of you saying you want to go through a transformation to become something greater. And most of the time, some of us are too scared, we're too fearful, we're too, uh, you know, attached to the previous version of ourselves. But since everything is a test, the question is, do you really want to pass? Do you really want to see something greater about yourself, even if it means you have to let go of a lower level of yourself or lower, um, a lower being of yourself to become this greater version? So I know I'm not really saying anything maybe too, uh, maybe it doesn't seem too great gravitas for you.. But when you're someone who's venturing on a journey, and this is what I love about athletics, right? Like when you're going on a journey to like put yourself to the test, like the physical, mental commitment that it takes to be an elite athlete, which is the kind of athletes I work for, it's just amazing what occurs for them through that process. And this is why we look up to them in a lot of ways because they just show up differently. They just seem larger than life, but it's because they have spent years and years endeavoring in something and discovering new and greater levels of themselves beyond what one can think is possible. I remember running in track and field, and just, there's times that you think you have nothing left, and then you just find something else that's there for you. And that's what I mean by everything is a test, a test of your will, a test of your personhood, a test of what's possible for you. And so all in all, I'm really encouraging you to put your beliefs to the test. Right? I mean, the fact that you, you believe in something doesn't mean you have to go out and defending it. But what I'm saying is, in the moment of stating plainly that I believe that everything is always working out for me, just something as simple as that, life is going to test you with something that seems to be the opposite of that. And how you navigate that is going to determine really what the outcome is. So it doesn't mean that life is like looking to prove you wrong. It's looking to see, do you really believe that? Because here's a small obstacle. Let's think of it as a hurdle, like in track and field. So when you hit a hurdle, right, you hit one hurdle, it can mean the difference between winning and losing. But we've seen tests where someone has— we've seen examples in life, in sport, where someone's hit one hurdle and then they end up winning the race because they didn't let that small setback, that small moment of adversity completely deter them on the path. So when you have these tests, these tests of your will, of your, of your beliefs, of your personhood, the key is, is to keep your legs moving, right? Like in football, when you make contact, you keep moving, you gain some extra yards. So if you truly believe that everything's going to work out for you, that you, you have faith that, you know, at the end of the season you will be victorious there's going to be tests. You're going to lose a game right when you think you're supposed to win them all. But it's this— the forging through and knowing that this is no indication of my entire destiny. This is a moment, a blip, right? And if I walk through this with the strength and conviction that I know to be true, I will be victorious on the other side. So that's what I'm encouraging you. And these aren't like the tests that you did in school. And I know some of us have a lot of anxiety around tests, right? Around, um, around, uh, like, uh, having tests in school and, you know, not doing well. But this is not that kind of test. This isn't a test where you're graded per se by some, um, authority like a teacher or someone else. This is life saying, listen, everything you want is possible if you just be but willing to have faith that it's there. And so anything you want to endeavor in, what— no matter where you are in sport, no matter where you are in life, it's possible for you. But you're going to have to step up and say, I'm willing to go through the adversity that it takes. Much like a metal wanting to transform into a liquid, you have to go through a transformation, transformative process to be able to come out the other side changed, right? So what I'm asking you is to know that as you get there, the as it gets a little, um, heated, right? So the metal into the, you know, from the solid into the liquid, there's going to be heat. But on the other side is still a version of you that is still made up of the components of the former version, but maybe in a better form for whatever the next part of your life will have in store. So just know that as you go through your sport, as you go through life, there will be adversity. There will be moments where you're not able to see the complete end result, but you will come out the other side victorious, I promise. And that is the key. So remember, everything is a test. The question is, are you willing to endeavor in it so that you can pass, not that you can fail? The idea is for you to pass because it's already been set out for you. It's just saying, if you believe this, then here, I'm going to put something in your path to make sure that you walk through this with the same level of conviction that you had prior to the test. Prior to the adversity. And so you're— everything that in— there's also another saying, one more thing I want to leave you with, on everything that happens in life, right, to you, happens for you. So since it's happening for you, you can't truly lose. So I encourage you to walk through the tests with the same conviction and strength that you've always had, and knowing that any small seemingly setback, adversity, is only there to provide another step into the greatest level of you. So I look to see the best version of you going forward. Thank you for watching this episode of The Mental Advantage Podcast. Leave a comment below as to your favorite part of this episode.
