"Get me a drink, you idiot!" If we respond with, "How dare you speak to me like that!" do we find it actually changes anything except makes kids resentful and usually unwilling to try again? Here are two causes of rudeness. One, kids are impulsive and impatient and they have strong needs, so the need for a drink is expressed with this tone of voice. And two, they've got into the habit of speaking to us like this and we haven't helped them to do something different. Next time this happens, try, "Wow, you must be thirsty!" and you're feeling impatient. I don't want to be shouted at or called an idiot. So when you're ready, you can try again and make a request like, 'Please, can you get me a drink?' Then I'm happy to help. Could this be helpful for you if you struggle with rudeness?
