Instead of asking kids direct questions, try "I wonder if" statements to get them talking. Follow up with "Tell me more" and never dismiss what they say, even if it seems small. This builds trust and helps you actually understand what's going on.

I was asked that great question this morning, and in answer to it, I would put on my antennae. We always want to be finding out what's going on for children, and I'd ask 'I wonder if' questions rather than a direct question. 'I wonder if there's something with another child that's bothering you.' 'I wonder if you don't like going to the toilet now at nursery.' And whatever answer your child gives, Say, 'Tell me more. I really want to hear about this.' And never dismiss— even if they give a sort of what seems like a trivial answer, never dismiss it. So if you like this and you like what I say, definitely make sure you click follow and tag a friend and tell them to follow me too.
