Interview Horror Stories #3. He offended the BIG boss!

Laurie Braddy shares how a VP candidate lost a job offer by publicly criticizing a board member's LinkedIn during a final meet-and-greet. The candidate thought they were being helpful, but instead offended the wrong person and tanked the deal.
Hey, guys, it's Lori with career coaching.
Now back for another interview.
Horror story.
I tell these stories to try and.
Help you guys not to do the same thing while you guys are interviewing. So we'll get started, we'll jump right in. This one is he offended the big boss.
So I had a VP of marketing.
Who was actually going in just to meet the board.
So this person had already been through.
Two rounds of interviews and all he was doing was going in to meet the board. Just a meet and greet, no big deal. An offer was actually ready for him. So he gets in, sits down at the table, and he proceeds to target one of the board members by saying that, you know, his LinkedIn wasn't great and that, you know, this is what he could do to make his LinkedIn better.
But he didn't say it quite that way.
He basically called this person out in front of everybody and said that his LinkedIn was horrible, that he can't believe.
A board member would have such a horrible LinkedIn. And it went on and on.
Well, the board was literally stunned, could not believe that somebody would come in for an offer, meet with the board, and basically single somebody out. Again, this person was getting an offer that he was just going in to meet the board members.
So the moral of this story is when you go in, you know, obviously.
He wanted to try to help this person, but he went about it the wrong way.
You know, read the room if you will, but no matter what, even if.
It'S your first interview, second interview, you know, whatever, it doesn't matter. You don't want to, number one, single somebody out regardless of their position.
And number two, you know, being helpful.
Is one thing, but this went a little bit far. I felt really bad for the candidate because he literally was going in to accept a position.
I got a call within 10 minutes.
Of this person leaving that meeting, and the client said, absolutely not. His judgment is poor. We don't want a VP like that working within our company.
And unfortunately, he didn't get the offer. So again, when you go in, just make sure that you're, you know, still. Even though, you know, you.
You're going to get the position, he knew he was going to get this position. He knew an offer was waiting, but he proceeded to really single out somebody and it really pissed him off, to be honest.
So he definitely offended the big boss.
Didn'T get the position.
So anyway, hope you guys learned something from that and I'll be back again with more horror stories and I'll talk to you guys soon.
Again.
It's Laurie with career coaching now. Have a good day. Bye.
