Most Common BOTOX® Complications

Dr. Charles Mok breaks down the most common Botox complications: brow ptosis from over-treating the frontalis, the 'Spock brow' from uneven central treatment, and eyelid ptosis in about 1 in 500 cases. Most are preventable, treatable, and temporary.

What are the most common complications of Botox? We see thousands and thousands of patients and one of the questions I asked when patients first came in is what problems have you had with Botox in the past? Because they're new to us. The most common complication by far is a dropped brow. They over treated the forehead, the frontalis muscle in the brow dropped and they look angry or tired or eyes look swollen. They that's the most common. The second most common complication I hear from patients that are new patients to us is they've had a Spock brow and that's where the lateral brow overly lifts and the central brow is drooped. And that's from treating just the central frontalis or under treating the glabella. So that's something that could be prevented as well. So those two things are both preventable. There's techniques we use to prevent them. Those are the most common complications. A complication that's a little bit more serious with Botox that occurs infrequently is dropping of the eyelids. Sometimes Botox will penetrate through what's called the orbital septum and the eyelid can get droopy on one side. Very rare. About one out of maybe 500 patients, if that occurs as a drop you can put in your eye to correct it. So that occurs. Those can all be improved. Of course, they all wear off over time.
