A short educational YouTube clip by Dr. Charles Mok explaining the difference between platelets and stem cells. The speaker states that platelets are cell fragments that signal stem cells, while stem cells are whole cells (including mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow and stem cells from fat) that can differentiate into other cell types.

A lot of times, lay people are coming in, they're saying, what's the difference in a platelet and a stem cell? The difference between a stem cell and a platelet? A platelet is a fragment of a cell. It turns out that platelets will actually signal stem cells. A stem cell is a cell in your body that can become other things. We get stem cells from fat, but we also get very robust stem cells. We call it mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow. In the bone marrow are the types of cells that can become other things. Bone marrow is what creates our cells. So stem cells are essentially cells that can become other things, but they're a whole cell. A platelet, again, is a fragment of a cell that can't necessarily become other things, but can act as a signal to a stem cell.
