A short YouTube talk by Dr. Charles Mok introducing Wegovy (brand name) and its generic semaglutide, explaining that the drug originated as a diabetes medication and is related conceptually to metformin. The speaker describes GLP-1 agonists as reducing appetite (especially for carbohydrates), improving insulin sensitivity, and producing larger weight loss effects than typically seen with diabetes treatments.

I want to talk to you about the weight loss drug that was really taking the country by storm. It's called Wegovy, or the direct brand name is Wegovy, and the generic name is semiglutide. And the drug first came out as a diabetic drug that copied some principles and effects of a drug called metformin that's been around a long time. And we know that metformin does things for diabetes, makes people healthier. It actually extends their life to some degree. They have a longer health span and helps people lose weight. But the dose you need to lose weight might be a little higher than a lot of people can tolerate. Then they came out with a new class of drugs called GLP1 agonists, and they sign stimulate an effect of the metformin on your brain's desire to eat carbohydrates. It also improves your body's sensitivity to your own insulin, and as a result, their diabetes would get better. But the other thing that happened is they saw that on the diabetes form of the Wegovy brain drug, people lost weight more than they did typically with diabetes.
