Dr. Charles Mok explains why doctors worry testosterone therapy causes blood clots. Large studies of tens of thousands of men show no increased clotting risk from testosterone replacement, though the concern likely comes from how oral contraceptives affect women differently.

Two other things that sometimes doctors cite because of their lack of awareness and not prescribing testosterone. One of them is the possibility of getting a blood clot. So there's a theory that testosterone might cause blood clots because high dose birth control pills cause blood clots in women that are over 35 and smoking. So there's a unique subset of hormone replacement therapy, which would be the birth control pill, that has clotting effects in women. So doctors maybe have translated this in the men. So large studies done with tens of thousands of men looking at the rate of blood clotting and then with testosterone without testosterone, well, it's not protective, but does not increase your risk. So there's not an increased risk of blood clot, at least not scientifically, on testosterone placement in most clinical studies.
