Charlotte Kemp maps products on a scarcity-to-abundance quadrant, using the Hermès Birkin as extreme scarcity and Walmart knockoffs as mass-market. Scarcity generates desire as a marketing tool, while essentials like medication and housing belong in abundance. Where you place a product depends on your strategic goals.

Let's demonstrate these 2 trends that explain the world in 2025 in terms of retail, and in particular, we're going to look at the scarcity to abundance quadrants in terms of the Birkin handbag and high fashion. I confess this is not my field of expertise, so I had to do a little research, and there has been quite a bit of trending buzz about this particular Birkin handbag. It is an incredibly expensive luxury item that could go for more than $40,000. It is an appreciating asset. Many people claim the holy grail of handbags. There is a waiting list of months or even years to be able to attain one of these, crafted by a single trained artisan and requires a minimum of 18 hours to complete. Royalty, heads of state, and celebrities compete fiercely in order to be— in order to buy one of these handbags. Exquisite craftsmanship, absolutely romantic backstory— there is a story— and the extreme scarcity is what makes this handbag so expensive and desirable. Or you can get a popular version at the local Walmart, which has been nicknamed the Birkin, and that one is not priced anywhere near $40,000 but actually goes for $80 US. So when we look at this, we see that it's not about whether scarcity or abundance is good or bad, it's how we use it to retail, to market a product, to create desire and demand if necessary. What should be in abundance isn't necessarily luxury handbags, but we should certainly have life-saving medication in abundance, we should have fresh healthy food in abundance, and we should have affordable housing in abundance. So your products, wherever you place them on these quadrants, depends on how you are trying to market the product, what you're trying to achieve, and what your audience is. Learn more about these 2 particular trends and develop your thinking fit for the future. I'm Charlotte Kemp from futuresalchemist.com.
