A Map Metaphor for how we think about the past and the future

Charlotte Kemp uses a map metaphor to explain how we see the present as a blue gem, how the past shapes our view, and why we need broader perspective to face the future. Standing on the shoulders of giants matters, but so does weighing tradition against culture.

So now let us explore the second part of our map. The blue gem one-third of the way in represents this present moment in time that we are sharing. Well, we're sharing it asynchronously, but in any moment of time that you are sharing with other people, although you have a shared experience, you're all seeing it through the own facet of, or lens of your own experience. Whatever you have brought from the past, whatever you expect into the future, whatever you're hoping to gain from this present moment, that really does inform how you see that moment. So we want to remember that although we may have an agreeable conversation, we aren't necessarily agreeing to how to go forward into the future. So really take some time to understand how everyone is seeing that present moment. Just below that, there is a monument to the past, and we do love our monuments as humans. We do like to stand on the shoulders of giants to see further ahead. But let us remember that the phrase is that we stand on the shoulders of giants, we do not kneel before them. We do not have to maintain all of our history, all of our tradition, if it no longer serves us in the future. You kind of want to weigh up tradition versus culture and decide which is going to serve you best. But if you explore those 2 elements, you are almost prepared to move into the future. There's also a, a clock tower there which can also serve you if you don't want to stand on the shoulders of giants or look at monuments of the past. You do need to get that perspective. You do need to find a way to get a broader perspective of the world that you're moving into, what it means for your industry, your profession, your part of the world. And you get that by perspective. We can't see that when we're in the trenches. So find a way to step up, see a longer horizon, and prepare better for the future.
