Binary thinking divides the world into right and wrong, while fluid thinking recognizes the spectrum between extremes. Most complex situations, especially around identity and judgment, need the fluid approach. The real insight comes from blending both: decisive structure plus openness to nuance.

The other major trend that we look at is this one between binary and fluid, and this is more about how we see things. It is about identity, but also about options and choices. Binary is yes, no, right, wrong, ones or zeros, black or white, left or right. There's no choice here. It's one or the other, and there are places where, where that binary requirement is good, it's healthy. But in a lot of other places, we've applied this binary concept to things that should be fluid because there's a lot of space between— there's actually a lot of space between 0 and 1, but there's a lot of space between this right or wrong. Right or wrong could be a binary situation that implies scarcity rather than actually saying there are different ways to look at this situation. When these 2 trends intersect, we come up with something really quite amazing. So let's look at what happens when they intersect.
